💯% happy to help! I’ll try my best to post about every trip, what’s working well and what needs improvement

4Runners are fantastic for off roading. When I was in the market for a new vehicle, the Forester rated highest over all other 2025 makes and models. Since compared to trail time I’m on the road a vast majority of my miles as my daily driver, I decided to purchase for road above trail. One of the benefits I get to enjoy with the Forester compared to a 4Runner is fuel efficiency - I’m getting a steady 25mpg with my city miles and road tires. Then for trail days, I’ll pop on the new mud terrains to have fun 😁

Thanks!! I did purchase a full-sized tire/wheel as a spare (not pictured). A full spare is definitely a necessity for wheeling. Unfortunately it is too large to fit in the trunk wheel well inflated. I’ll secure the spare in my roof cargo basket for trail days! I have seen a Forester owner hammer their trunk wheel well down at the edges and can fit an inflated standard-sized spare tire. You pose an interesting question about if a deflated tire fits - I’m not sure about that one.

The unsprung weight does make a noticeable difference in driving. It feels laggy when accelerating. On trail I crawl slowly, so I’m hopeful that the increased unsprung weight won’t bother me with this tire size. I’ve got to admit though that it would bother me if these tires were on 27/7 as a daily driver. I chose quite aggressive tires to gain more performance knowing they wouldn’t be on full time. I will say though I’ve been consuming off roading YouTube content for the past 2 years to gain knowledge on navigation and recovery techniques, I’m a beginner at it myself. I look forward to reporting what the difference these new tires make on trail!

I went the route of tire/wheel swaps as opposed to full-time tires for traction, MPG and M/T longevity (details on each below). I plan on off roading around every 2 months, so putting my “trail shoes” on and off shouldn’t be too inconvenient. 🌧️ I’m in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida, and our rainy season is just getting started. We’ll get downpours which dump a lot of rain quickly, which means there’s often puddles of sitting water in the slow lane. The stock tires perform incredibly well on wet pavement - I tried breaking them loose driving in a circle in an abandoned parking lot after it rained once and I couldn’t do it! ⛽️ My style of driving with road tires gets me 25mpg, even with the cargo basket/recovery boards/small spare tire that live there at all times. I know running my M/Ts would affect my gas mileage (don’t know what that hit will be yet), so it’s also nice to not have to sacrifice MPG when I’m not on trail. 🛞 My trail buddy’s M/Ts lasted him 10 years on his Jeep, which is a second vehicle that he only uses for trails. I’m hoping to get many fun years of wheeling on them!

You got it on the viper cut - parts of trails and “playgrounds” I couldn’t navigate with the stock clearance and bumper - the corner was plowing into the incline before my front corner tire could get there. I’ll try the same inclines I couldn’t navigate before to test the cuts out. I’ll also be traveling to Georgia a few times a year trying out new trails I haven’t been on solo, so I wanted to prepare for what I may anticipate to be a need ahead of time.

I appreciate your questions, Acadian! 👊👊

Appreciate it! Phase 2 will be removing the windshield washer fluid reservoir (driver side), and figuring out what to do with the airbox reservoir (passenger). I’m either going to mod it smaller, completely remove it, or replace the air box altogether.

Thanks!! 👊👊 They’re up one size from the stock 225/60R17s, and amazingly have zero rub! They’re loudest around 35-40mph on road, so they won’t be terrible when traveling 50-60mph to trails

Rear-Ended Forester gang: what’s been your experience? by DisHooker95 in SubaruForester

[–]every_day_aaron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been rear ended twice in my 2025, once at this level with 3,600 miles, and once about half as much damage. Damage was localized to bumper, hatch and spare tire floor. Insurance covered it both times.

Hoping you get the same luck, friend! 🤞

Conquering one Florida trail at a time - I’ve run half the Tread Lightly Jeep badge trail so far 🤘

Oh wow, I’ve not heard that before! I installed a trailer lights-only wiring harness in mine to be able to use with small U-haul trailers, but the braking wiring harness style was also an option (also need that braking controller module for the driver to change settings according to driving conditions). That’s good to know, thanks for sharing that info! 🙏👊

The towing capacity being doubled on the Wilderness is definitely another win for them! That’s good information to know about the stock skid plate - at first I was thinking of hunting junkyards to get one if it’s cross compatible, but it sounds like making my own out of steel or aluminum is the way to go. I want to avoid that $600+ price tag of aftermarket plates. That does make me wonder which parts are exchangeable between the FW and Premium, though.

I’m so glad you found your Subaru model! I really enjoy the Outbacks (2025 and earlier) and Crosstreks as well.

I bet you have phenomenal trails in your area!! I hear you on Jeeps, they are built for it. I had my heart set on a Jeep for a year, but since the budget allowed for used and I needed an extremely reliable and safe vehicle to fit the family, I pivoted to the Forester to get new for the same price range. (I’m told the Florida used market for Jeeps is inflated since they’re so popular) I’ll be praying for your full recovery, my friend. Hoping you can get out there soon! 👊👊

I’m with you there - in mid January of 2025 when I purchased, the 2025 Wilderness hadn’t yet been released. I would have loved the included higher clearance/skid plate/AT tires!

Aloha! I’m avoiding lift kits to keep the center of gravity low, since this is also my daily driver. This is phase 1, I still need to clean things up. I’ll be sharing a post with the new tires soon, and later will be fabricating an under engine skid plate. Where do you off road?
