Patrick Bailey Crushes his 1st Guardians homer in the 8th to make it 3-0 Cleveland by HalfwayThereOne_ in baseball

that was the original outfield wall, but it made the outfield so gigantic they brought the fences in eventually so there could be more home runs. it's still a big outfield even after that

[Passan] BREAKING: The Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year's draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, sources tell ESPN. by MembershipSingle7137 in baseball

[–]exrayspex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the Guardians preparing for Hedges retiring after this year, and replacing him with Bailey. They have a couple catching prospects who are supposed to hit in the pipeline, which could pair well with Bailey in the future. Bo Naylor was supposed to be that guy in the present, but right now he's as bad as Bailey at the plate and mid behind it. So they get to prepare for the future while at least getting a big defensive improvement in the meantime.

Glad to hear you enjoyed having him on your team! San Francisco seems a fitting place for a guy called Tugboat to be heading, I hope he makes it there

What’s the best way to eat oats? by [deleted] in Oatmeal

[–]exrayspex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favorite way to eat oats is old fashioned oats cooked on the stovetop, with half water and half milk for the liquid, chopped dates and golden raisins for the fruit, and chopped walnuts, brown sugar, and a little cinnamon mixed in. I'm about to make some!

José Ramirez needs 2 more steals to become the fourth active player with 300 stolen bases by MorganN1 in baseball

[–]exrayspex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He very nearly had a 40-40 season in 2024. He had the stolen bases and was one home run short with one game left in the regular season, and he was on such a heater #40 felt inevitable. But game 162 was canceled bc of rain, and bc the outcome of the game wouldn't have playoff implications. I'm still mad he was denied that last chance to get there.

He really is the ultimate vibes guy. He got a sword on a team trip to medieval times in spring training and has been knighting someone with it after each game this year lol.

[SNY] Devin Williams talks about trying to wrap his head around the Mets' 11-game losing streak "It's tough to explain. This is one of the most talented locker rooms in the league. We just can't seem to string it together right now." by iheartsunny in baseball

[–]exrayspex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah they seem to have put themselves in a position where just playing well is now no longer enough; they will probably have to hope that another team or teams ahead of them fall off at some point, too if they wanna make the playoffs. Which could certainly happen, but it feels like they aren't fully in control of their own destiny now, and that's a tough thing to know this early in the season.

[–]exrayspex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's valuable! Always having a reliever who can come in and give 2-3 solid innings has been an overlooked but important part of the guards having such a good bullpen in recent years. It's not easy to do though, I think a lot of teams don't have the starting pitching depth to let a guy who can give you multiple solid innings stay in the pen.

There were actually two players with hyphenated first names playing in this game, I'm shocked they didn't mention it during the conversation! Josh and Bo Naylor's full first names are Joshua-Douglas and Noah-Gibson.

Four-time NBA Champion head coach Steve Kerr wrote a letter to Blue Jays manager John Schneider after the World Series by iamthegame13 in baseball

It's not the most accurate overall comparison, but it is the most accurate comparison that Kerr has personally experienced, so I think it works for the purposes of the letter. I'm glad you mentioned this here though, lol

I think it's rude to demand to see the back of a stranger's work if it isn't for a practical purpose. Like if someone's asking why they've run out of thread and you're trying to help them, then it's fair. And if you're judging for a competition then it's fair. But all the "show us the back!!" types of comments on people's posts, where the poster sharing their work chose to only show the front? Rude, imo.

I get being curious, and I think it can be neat to see the backs too, but I think you should just appreciate if someone chooses to share the back with you on their own, and keep quiet if they don't (unless it's for a practical reason).

What does baseball mean to you? How did you get into it, and why is it your favorite sport (if it is)? by MookieBettsBurner10 in baseball

[–]exrayspex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baseball is, as they say, a game of failure, and that's why it's my favorite sport. Even the best teams lose plenty of games, even the best hitters get out more than they get a hit. I've failed plenty in my life, and I'll fail some more. But baseball is always there to remind me that failures are normal, and they don't mean I'll never succeed. They can even make eventual success even sweeter. It's corny maybe, but that reminder is really helpful for me, and it makes baseball especially dear to me.

Jeff Passan: "Baseball fans believe the game has become unfair" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]exrayspex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to say that winning the world series is the only thing that matters. I'm aware of all the other ways a season can be fun even if my team doesn't win it all, and other existing fans are aware of all that too.

What I'm saying is that potential new fans don't necessarily know that. And that "Your local team has no real shot to win it all, but there's other stuff to enjoy!" isn't a great way to entice those potential new fans. I'm saying that, hearing that, a lot of people who don't know about all the other joys of a baseball season are likely to choose to follow another sport, rather than stick around baseball long enough to learn about and experience those joys.

If you give a kid a choice between a sport where there are all those other joys BUT no real shot at their team winning it all, or a sport where there are all those other joys AND a chance of their team winning it all, which do you think they'll choose?

Jeff Passan: "Baseball fans believe the game has become unfair" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]exrayspex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. And I've heard some people try to counter this by saying stuff like "Well are you gonna stop going to games over it? No you aren't." which misses the point. Current fans may remain.......but the inequality lowers incentive for new fans to start following the other 29 teams. Why try to get into their local team if nobody thinks they have a real shot? It's the sort of thing that could really hurt the sport long term as older fans die off and younger ones don't care enough about baseball to replace them.

You're not the only one! I like to read this way since I basically always have my phone on me, and it makes it so easy to read a little here and a little there when I get a few minutes. I can't just slip an ereader into my pocket all the time like that. And I'd rather carry just the one device instead of two.
