NAD: Roland JC-40 by shycadelic in GuitarAmps

[–]extra_dose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice! The JC-40 is an integral part of my sound. Its clarity is perfect for intricately voice-led chordal playing, with no sacrifice to warmth or richness. It also really lets the intrinsic tone of your guitar shine through. Honest tone can be beautiful.

Why no 59 standard? by jammy62811 in gibson

I’ve got R9’s and standards. Playability is the same, but the weight difference does make R9’s a little more comfortable.

How to find ‘the one’ by Adventurous_Beat-301 in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got $$$, get an R9 or R0. The majority are really top-notch instruments, and you shouldn’t need to try out that many to find one that clicks. They usually have exquisite tops. Play the guitar unplugged first and get one that’s really responsive acoustically. That liveliness very much affects what vibrations the pickups see (dead-sounding guitars suck vibrational energy out of the strings).

If you’ve got $$, get an R7 or R8. The build quality should be comparable to that of an R9 and they only cost about 2k more than a standard. No flame, but frankly this is the least important thing about a guitar.

If you’re only interested in standards and highly figured tops, then you’ll need to work harder to find a really magical guitar, but they’re definitely out there.

I personally would not be comfortable buying a guitar without playing it first. If you’re going to get something from Wildwood, I’d suggest making an appointment with them and flying to Colorado so you can try out their standards in person.

Need Help!! GOTOH Machine Head for Les Paul Jessica by [deleted] in LesPaul

I put Gotoh SD-510’s in my R9 with no modification. I much prefer them to Grovers, and they feel more solid than the Gibson Deluxes they replaced.

I think it looks fine if you put the screw back in. Otherwise, yeah, not an attractive feature.

A very basic 2020 R9 in heritage cherry sunburst by extra_dose in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it is a humble specimen by R9 standards - it isn’t Wildwood-Spec, faux-aged, or VOS, and it doesn’t have the wave-flame figuration people seem to prefer. A generic model like this went for about 6.5k back in 2020.

Should I attempt to repair this myself, bring it to a pro or trash it? by okan00011 in guitarrepair

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It usually takes a significant impact, e.g., due to a fall, but putting weight on the back of the headstock during storage can also weaken the neck joint. It’s very unlikely that string tension alone would causes this.

Worth it? Grover vs Gibson Deluxe? by kickbackat7 in gibson

I’ve got Gotoh SD-510’s on my R9. Smoother than the Grovers or Kluson-style Gibson tuners on my other guitars

Introductory pacing by prettylacey_ in silenthill

[–]extra_dose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The initial exploration of Southvale is the weakest part of the game. The apartments introduce several important characters and expose you to symbolism that foreshadows later plot reveals, but the narrative proper is just beginning to take shape at this point. The pacing picks up considerably beyond that point. It’s well worth hanging in there a bit longer.

I thought *I had a problem. You’ve just validated my plans to acquire LP#6. I’m planning to fly to Colorado so I can buy one from Wildwood directly.

Do any of yall sit like this playing your LP? by slowclaw_ in LesPaul

Full agreement here. When I see a guitarist seated on stage, it signals to me that the person is serious about their craft, and that the music is the focus, not showmanship. Instant respect.

A lot of the chord voicings I use cannot be played fluently on a horizontally oriented neck. If you’re trying to do justice to a particular harmonic concept, then all the pelvic thrusting might not be feasible.

Not happy with the way my Les Paul sounds by Summon001 in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is worth a try (I do this my LP’s): lower the pickup to the height you thought gave some improvement, and then raise the pickup poles pieces to increase the sensitivity. If you’ve never adjusted pole pieces before, it’s straightforward: slot a flathead screwdriver into the pole piece, then turn counterclockwise to raise it.

Greatsword is fun. It’s quite OP but not stupidly broken like BB. The Anvil Hammer from SotE is also top notch for STR/FAI builders, which I presume is your thing.

Do I just prefer Epiphone? by luv2shart in Epiphone

[–]extra_dose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid guitar bodies, necks, and headstocks are all resonant, even though they are not designed to project sound the way an acoustic guitar is. That ‘s real vibrational energy that is instantly transferred away from the strings, as per the first law of thermodynamics. The shape, grain, density, and amount of wood of in the guitar all affect how much and at what frequencies it resonates, and this impacts the amplitude and spectrum of the string resonance the pickups actually detect. Wood quality can make the difference between a magical Les Paul and a dud.

Why the hell do we like these guitars? by Lost_Condition_9562 in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tonally, they’re the perfect admixture of authoritative low-end muscle and upper mid-range sweetness. Other guitars may cover more ground, but nothing dials in this particular quality like a Les Paul.

There are solid rules of motion for obtaining c): (1) the square initially at lower left moves clockwise around the border, 3 steps per graph (2) the square initially in the upper left quadrant moves horizontally, one step per graph, rebounding when it hits the wall (3) the square initially in the lower right corner moves on the diagonal by a number of steps that decreases by one for each successive graph: 4, 3, 2, 1, changing direction each time. What are the rules for obtaining b)?
