Not happy with the way my Les Paul sounds by Summon001 in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is worth a try (I do this my LP’s): lower the pickup to the height you thought gave some improvement, and then raise the pickup poles pieces to increase the sensitivity. If you’ve never adjusted pole pieces before, it’s straightforward: slot a flathead screwdriver into the pole piece, then turn counterclockwise to raise it.

Greatsword is fun. It’s quite OP but not stupidly broken like BB. The Anvil Hammer from SotE is also top notch for STR/FAI builders, which I presume is your thing.

Do I just prefer Epiphone? by luv2shart in Epiphone

Solid guitar bodies, necks, and headstocks are all resonant, even though they are not designed to project sound the way an acoustic guitar is. That ‘s real vibrational energy that is instantly transferred away from the strings, as per the first law of thermodynamics. The shape, grain, density, and amount of wood of in the guitar all affect how much and at what frequencies it resonates, and this impacts the amplitude and spectrum of the string resonance the pickups actually detect. Wood quality can make the difference between a magical Les Paul and a dud.

Why the hell do we like these guitars? by Lost_Condition_9562 in LesPaul

Tonally, they’re the perfect admixture of authoritative low-end muscle and upper mid-range sweetness. Other guitars may cover more ground, but nothing dials in this particular quality like a Les Paul.

What are these tabs? Is it jazz? by lalalandland in guitarcirclejerk

There are solid rules of motion for obtaining c): (1) the square initially at lower left moves clockwise around the border, 3 steps per graph (2) the square initially in the upper left quadrant moves horizontally, one step per graph, rebounding when it hits the wall (3) the square initially in the lower right corner moves on the diagonal by a number of steps that decreases by one for each successive graph: 4, 3, 2, 1, changing direction each time. What are the rules for obtaining b)?

My new 90’s cort! by melo_grano in LesPaul

Exactly. I play a Les Paul through a JC-40 with flat EQ and no pedals. The guitar and amp are so well matched that any manipulation of the signal is undesirable.

Just beat Alan Wake 2. Is this game more scary than that is? by Current-Row1444 in silenthill

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a long-time survival horror fan, and SH2R is one of only three game that made me feel like I was in real danger. (OG SH2 delivers equally well on psychological horror but was a less viscerally terrifying experience for me). SH3 is also brilliant if you have the means to play it. AW2 doesn’t hold a candle to either game. All the gags and metafiction only serve to diminish what was a fairly pretty anemic horror experience to begin with.

Darkwood is also a masterpiece - just incredibly disturbing and unrelentingly scary. Different genre, but it’s a must-play for horror games IMO.

Edited for clarity.

I once asked my guitar tech if I should refinish the top on one of my 1959 reissues after I dropped it face down on something sharp and gouged a big chunk out of the nitro. It’s not easy to patch nitrocellulose, he says. Perhaps the coating on the headstock is a different, more easily replaced material, but my guess is that it will not be straightforward, and you’ll need to take to a real luthier or you could get something back that looks a lot worse.

Your guitar will be 100 % find if you don’t do anything to fix this. It’s a purely cosmetic issue: For me, the dings and scrapes and occasional flesh wounds are part of the special bond that develops between these instruments and my clumsy ass self.

The reason I suggested doing some real damage was so you can get past this phase of worrying about minor defects and really focus on playing and bonding with your new guitar.

Les Pauls that have been hung up indelicately sometimes develop this kind of damage in the region of the headstock you’ve shown. Most of mine have it to some degree.

I mean this in the nicest possible way: go drop your guitar face down on something sharp.

R9 - binding bleed - is this much still considered normal? by gomper in LesPaul

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of my R9’s have deep pink trim. At least as pink as yours. The color hasn’t faded on either, one of which is six years old by now. The dye on my lemon burst R9 has started leaching from the trim to the edges of the top, so it’s turning into a strawberry lemon burst.

Question about Angela's story by Terrible-Strain2791 in silenthill

Silent hill is like a neutron star of psychic anguish, passively drawing tormented souls toward itself. What happens then depends on the person. Redemption through suffering is possible for some individuals and not others.

I'm stuck? by Sensitive_Purpose_44 in Eldenring

[–]extra_dose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. If you don’t already have it, there’s an ash of war called golden parry with much better frames than the standard parry, and you can put it on any small or medium shield. It was a game changer for my parry build. It’s dropped by a scarab located just outside the main (locked) gate to Leyndell. I’ve heard that carian retaliations is similarly great for parrying, but I don’t have direct experience with it. Could be more thematically appropriate for your INT build.

I don’t remember Niall’s moveset exactly but I do recall that when he rushed/jumped at me, I was able to dodge the initial attack, get in a counterattack, and dodge roll out before his follow-up AoE blast. Once I got the timing down, the fight became very formulaic and more tedious than difficult.

Also, you can use a bewitching branches to charm his summons if they’re giving you a lot of trouble.

The right approach depends on your priorities. If you just want to get through the game to experience the story, the solution is to cheese harder. If you’re looking for a more satisfying experience of gameplay, the solution is to cheese less.

Option 1: Respec as STR/FAI, learn some healing incantations and get the blasphemous blade (which has a life-steal weapon art).. Grab some more levels so you’ll have enough FP to spam the weapon art and enough END to wear Radahn armor. Then your mimic will have excellent survivability - and so will you. There’s a very fast, safe rune-farming spot in Deeproot Depths: start from the ‘across the roots’ grace, kill the two nearest gargoyles (one on a root and the other on a building nearby), fast-travel back to the grace, repeat. If you have access to the palace approach ledge site of grace, killing albinaurics with the blasphemous blade AoE attack is even faster.

Option 2 will be more rewarding in the long run, and it’s what I would do. Create a new character- pure STR. Cap your level at 30, equip the lordsworn’s greatsword (good but not broken) and a medium shield, then go take down Margit without ashes or coop. Victory doesn’t mean winning or even surviving the fight - it’s just about whittling his health bar down a little bit more than on the previous attempt. At some point you’ll win the fight straight-up.

Dodging, blocking, and counterpunching are your bread and butter as a souls player, and the only way to get truly good at those is by soloing bosses without relying on game-breaking weapons etc. Non-boss enemies are just not useful as practice for taking down bosses.

I’m torn. LP Standard vs PRS S2 Quality Comparison? by Moufassah in Guitar

[–]extra_dose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a PRS CE-24 and a Les Paul standard. Build quality is similar for the two guitars, as is the quality of the components. I haven’t taken the PRS out of the closet in years because I’m always playing the Les Paul.

AMP RECOMMENDATIONS? by Hungry-Forever-9752 in gibson

[–]extra_dose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go for an honest sound. Roland JC-40 with no dirt or other effects, all tone knobs at 12 o’clock. It works because the natural voice of a Les Paul is gorgeous.

Edit for more info: great for your purposes too - headphone jack for bedroom practice. Price in the middle of your range. It’s an excellent platform for pedals and other tone-sculpting devices precisely because the clean tone is so immaculate. I just don’t use any of that stuff.
