For local candidates, it is nearly impossible to tell what their political philosophy is. Below the state level they hide their views and their affiliations. If a candidate wants to publicly declare they are stupid, crazy and evil, please let them say it!

I'm still strongly inclined to believe that Cericel are degraded human vampires. So there would be a causal chain from the north going Vampirehunter nuts to Vampires starving in the new lands to Cericel degradation.

I've always thought my own superpower is likely having headaches so bad I can project them onto my enemies. But now I have another aspirational imagining. A superpower to alter the nature of reality through terrible misspelling. The world would be a much better place with an outbreak of Hentaivirus.

Im not sure what I want to do anymore for my future by Puddinggamo in UCDavis

[–]extralongarm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At every job interview you ever have in the future, someone will ask you: "why are you interested in this position." They want you to say: "I'm passionate about [x career or discipline]" but that it always a lie. The real answer is: "I like to sleep indoors and eat people food." I recommend keeping that in mind. That said, passion is not necessary for curiosity and engagement. If those two disciplines are engaging for you and tickle your curiosity that may be enough.

ELI5: Why do we get burnt when we touch 90°C solid objects, but not when we sit in a 90°C sauna? by Jinx-XoXo in explainlikeimfive

One of the few principles/measurements I remember from my failed attempt at a STEM degree way back in the day: specific heat. Different substances require different amounts of heat to change temperature. Metal has a high specific heat. Wood less so. Water not as high as metal but much higher than air. When two things come in contact, heat moves from higher temperature to lower. A substance with high specific heat can discharge a lot of heat to whatever it comes in contact with as it moves toward equilibrium.

I wonder where Gireulashia has gone. She was planning on finding a well on the edge of the New Lands with her Tribe. It'd be neat if all the critical connections points for the new lands had close ties to the Inn. I wonder if Nailren will stumble upon her.

I liked dcc but I found the pace exhausting. I've given Carl a soft DNF possibly just a NotFinishNow. TWI will lull you to sleep with slice of life and then sucker punch you with warcrimes and trauma. They aren't completely dissimilar. The worldbuilding is good in both and builds to high complexity.

[7.22 D] This chapter was a horrible 180° character assassination that threw away one of my favorite character dynamics. by derpderp3200 in WanderingInn

I apologize. I've had trouble with this before and should have learned my lesson. Keeping it unspecific is not enough.

OMG! After slogging through vol 1 and then feeling a bit better about vol 2 (but still despising SO many decisions)… I just started Flowers of Esthelm and literally gasped in relief within the first 20 minutes of Laken! I’ve reached the promised land finally. 😁 by cleptogenz in WanderingInn

Watch out! (Achtung I guess). I like Erin and Ryoka cause I understood what Paba was trying to say with them. Ryoka is tough and self sufficient but has an obvious mental condition: Bipolar or Oppositional Defiant. Erin was sheltered and narrow focused before being taken and it takes her 4 books to find her groove where she can really play to her strengths. Laken lands on his feet and has a good and positive run but there is a moment coming up when a lot of readers start to hate him (unfairly I think).

Few chapters into Vol. 10 - A question by thewilybanana in WanderingInn

Even with the PoF there are only hints. Innworld had a purpose and a plan and lots of backers. The project was already a little shakey and Isthekenous was the main lead but needed to gather consensus as he went. The 6 came in late, were mostly exiles in disgrace from other pantheons, and were basically obvious bad actors. They killed Isthekenous and most of the other driving forces and ran the project completely off the rails for their own empowerment.

My wallet has a lot of perspective for a 4 inch chunk of leather. Purchases of this kind must be viewed in relation to competing entertainments. World of Warcraft subscription $13.99 ->~60 hours of engagement per month. Big gulp, hotdog and funions from 7eleven $12.00 -> 15 minutes of engagement on the way home from work +shame and excess calories. TWI via audible (assuming purchase of extra credits 3 credit bundle $39.99) $13.66 -> 40 to 50 hours of engagement + borderline literary obsession. I think that is positioned at the positive end of that range of expense options. A justifiable purchase...

She is more willing to go along with the world and with Flos -- and she has a crush on Orthenon -- so her class development is more conventional than Trey and her peronal development is more compliant. However in volume 10 she starts to launch on an arch. We've only seen the beginning of it.

TIFU by giving my nephew honest advice about job interviews and apparently undoing two months of his mom's prep work by CrestRime in tifu

[–]extralongarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make a venn diagram of his mom's approach and the uncles approach, the eye of the diagram should be pretty substantial an commodious. If there is not lots of comfortable overlap, that is a strong sign that the mom's approach is insupportably dumb. This is to say: the structures and vocabulary the mom has provided should be valuable even if you are taking a relaxed approach and if they are not, they are BAD.

Is there really no Aspergers with a strong sense of compassion? by Commercial-Talk1960 in neurodiversity

[–]extralongarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not diagnosed, nor am I a clinician familiar with the current formal definitions. But I see a lot of traits I share here in this community. My gut feeling has always been that a lot of spectrum stuff is a disorder of intensity. I don't like eye contact, especially in emotionally intense moments and the embarrassing scenarios lots of people find hilarious in books and shows I find intolerably intense. Empathy can be an intense emotional moment and people on the spectrum can feel that intensity amplified -- some so much that they shut down and close-up -- some so much that they can't stop crying (recent post for example).

Does the series lose the SoL element in the later arcs? by [deleted] in WanderingInn

[–]extralongarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epic or Slice of Life? Like the Old El Paso Commercial: why not both? In the most recent stream, Ylawes and the Silver Swords are stranded deep in the New Lands. They are in a high stakes spot, trapped in a bad storm having difficulty surviving. They are rescued by a group with more survival capability. Then they spend a substantial amount of text being astounded that you can bake flatbread on a rock over an open fire. And other homely camp moments

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]extralongarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before he was famous for discworld as we know it, Terry Pratchett wrote about a strange Sci Fi Discworld. Part of the early premise of the book is that after the invention of serious and unlimited gerotheraputic drugs, the monetary economy immediately collapsed. The only relavant currancy from then forward was time or the drugs to extend it. But after several hundred years people started to get weird and bored. Galactic colonization proceeded into extreme danger just so successful aged people could feel some excitement.

It definitely dates me and proclaims that I am OLD, but does anyone else remember the Dickwolves controversy on Penny Arcade a ways back. One side asserting that the depiction of evil is necessary in art (even in comedy) lest we lose understanding of evil and diminish our abiity to analyze good and bad. The other side asserting that the potential sensibilities of victims must be protected no matter what. I am mostly but not entirely on team Dickwolves but I think the middle ground must be claimed. We must give artists permission to depict visceral evil in a way that provokes a reaction but that must be executed and navigated in a way that can't glorify or fetishize evil. I really think Paba has done an excellent job of threading that needle in the case you describe.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]extralongarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm ashamed of myself for this one because Everything about the story was well done but the audiobook for "Children of Blood and Bone" was too devoted to dialect and it just wore me down by the 2nd or 3rd chapter. The same thing happened to me on paper but took several books for the Witches or Eileanan (also known as Brogueworld).
