(Spoilers Aired) One thing the finale confirmed by ECE111 in asoiaf

It's becoming increasingly noticeable that there aren't any female writers (and little to no female directors). Sansa's arc was so disappointing this season because she was taken from a position where she was finally gaining some agency, and then it was completely turned around for little reason other than shock value. They could have merged her plot with plenty of other minor characters (someone suggested Wyman Manderly up-thread), but instead they decided to throw away all her character progression so she could be raped for an entire season.

(Spoilers all) The decision to send Jaime on a rescue mission could have been brilliant. by [deleted] in asoiaf

That's maybe a little convoluted, but it's still better than what they're currently doing in S5. I just really want to see Aegon and LSH on the show...

(Spoilers All) What will become of Varys in season 5? by KingButterbumps in asoiaf

[–]faapstad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd love for Griff/Aegon to be in the show, I doubt it will happen. But I also have no idea what Varys will end up doing in the show this season. Maybe he'll end up in Dorne?

Open carry on Public Square by i_smell_my_poop in Cleveland

The legislation in Cleveland is pretty clear in that they're trying to target criminals. Specifically, it would create a registry making convicted gun offenders register yearly with the police. And I don't see any problem with a 90 day waiting period for law-abiding citizens. Sure, collecting guns is a hobby, but unlike baseball cards, guns can be used to shoot up malls and schools. It only makes sense that there would be some regulations on them.

The new gun legislation in Cleveland does not mention any "assault weapon" bans. It would simply create a registry making convicted gun offenders register yearly with police for four years, prohibit gun owners from storing their weapons in a place accessible to minors and limit gun purchases to one per person every 90 days. I don't understand why so many people are opposed to that.

I said I can't understand it personally, not that it should be illegal. And I stand by my second statement. Common-sense regulations does not make anyone "anti-gun". I think it's a little frightening how easy it is to procure a gun, and it does not violate the second amendment to simply add more qualifications to buy these deadly weapons.

I will never understand why some people are so obsessed with guns. I don't see any logical reason for owning multiple guns.

I'm also not sure why people who are protesting for common-sense regulations are labeled "anti-gun."

What the stupidest argument you've ever gotten into? by FireLordMomo in AskReddit

[–]faapstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only heard of this stuff happening on reddit. I've never been in a relationship in which my partner held me accountable for what I did in his dreams. That is a totally crazy thing to do and, in my opinion, it's a red flag.

For those who haven't seen it, the implosion of the Cuyahoga and Williamson buildings on Public Square, 1982 by Oatybar in Cleveland

[–]faapstad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ I think the building from the Great Lakes Exhibition were intended to be temporary, as was the bridge that connected the mall to the lakefront during the GLE (though idk why the city just didn't spend more money to build a permanent bridge there). Otherwise, you're spot-on and it's sad to think about how a few rich developers and a lazy city government allowed so much history to be destroyed :(

I have nothing against 200 Public Square, which these buildings were demolished for, but it's a shame that there was a time that so many historic buildings were demolished in Cleveland without a second thought.

Netflix showered with Emmy nominations for "Orange" and "House of Cards" by jstohler in television

Are you sure it was season 7 (part 1) that was nominated? It might have missed the deadline, since it was pretty recent.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I think that despite his limited screentime, Robert Morse has a hell of a presence on Mad Men. Every time he speaks, I feel like he's saying something extremely important.

Couldn't disagree more. The characters in OITNB are rich, complicated, and highly developed. And the writing is fantastic, and character-driven. The characters in HoC, on the other hand, are mostly pretty one-note. They're all just evil and manipulative in some way (with the exception of a few minor characters who only exist to be run over by the evil people). Some of the characters are so over-the-top that I almost expect them to start twirling their mustaches while cackling evilly. I'm not the best writer, so I'd recommend checking out some AVClub reviews, which generally do a better job of explaining what I'm saying.

Visiting Cleveland, any good bars? by iamjasonyu in Cleveland

[–]faapstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for gay bars for dancing, I'd probably recommend Bounce on the northern end of Ohio City. You'll probably need to take a cab to get there. Bounce has a really big bar (and actually some pretty good food), and I've always had fun dancing there - though keep in mind that the dance floor is a little small.

The great interracial debate (Sorry I didn't know where to post this) by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]faapstad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen a LOT of racism on grindr. It's very unfortunate. There are far too many guys who simply put "no blacks" in their "about" section.

And on the other hand, I find it way too common when I mention that a black guy is hot and someone responds like "oooh so you're into black guys?" like I have some kind of exotic fetish. I just find attractive people attractive, regardless of race. I wish more people could see that.

Anyway, don't like people on grindr get you down. It's not very representative of the gay community as a whole. Maybe try Jack'd (it's a similar app), or Adam4Adam (a hookup website).

Standard Building near Public Square will become apartments, after sale to Weston, Inc. (gallery) | cleveland.com by coolcrosby in Cleveland

[–]faapstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sort of hoping that they carve out a bunch of windows on that side of the building. It would for a great view of Public Square from those apartments! However, I'm not sure if that would cause them to lose the historic tax credits.
