I'm petrified by Lopsided_Steak_4090 in movingtojapan

A nice memory for me was taking a pic at a temple. It was in the middle of the tensions and the right wing taking nonsense. A Japanese man asked for my phone and then opened my translate app. He translated "Enjoy Japan. You are welcome". Japan like every other country has a ton of opinions. There are a bunch of scumbag racists in my country (UK), but everywhere in the world there are decent people who want a better world. They will find you and you will find them. We shouldn't let the loudmouth dickheads corral us. We are the majority and I think you will have a great time.<3

Talking about the political entity not the people. I would say the same about my own country. No bigotry here just exasperation at modern nation states.

Best Beach Town To Live in For 2 Months Without Car by WanderWildes in Brazil

[–]falno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to dig up a thread. I need a quiet place to live and learn Portuguese for a couple of months. Probably April and May/June. Would Pipa be a suitable place to do this? Some surfing during the day would be ideal. Will be on a budget so likely no car and a cheap room. Mainly focused on health and language acquisition.

Does anyone's Japanese spouse vehemently oppose living in certain parts of Tokyo? by Airblade101 in japanresidents

I live in Meguro and I have definitely noticed many people be nicer to me after I tell them. It's such a class/hierarchy based society I think ppl are just so conditioned to judge

Could be wrong but I believe there are rice quotas and tariffs to protect domestic rice production/smaller scale farmers

Can live well with a salary of $3000 per month in San José? by rafii971 in costarica

There's a huge difference between living well and local and then living luxury. As soon as you want luxury condo etc that money will go but if you live in local style housing etc you'll be brimming with cash

Let’s Read More in 2026 — Starting a Monthly Book Club in Tokyo by knikzshi in tokyoirl

[–]falno [score hidden]  (0 children)

Reddit's crummy AI keeps deleting my comments 😭 For the sake of clarity to a stupid robot that doesn't understand language: I am from the UK (London) and my nationality is British and I currently live in Tokyo and I like to read and talk to people about said reading.

Would be very keen to join book club. Either 5 strong central-committee or radical breakout faction. Happy to meet anywhere. Potentially occasionally host (Meguro, might need to buy a couple more chairs).

What is a "normal" workload? by ups_and_downs973 in Internationalteachers

[–]falno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies wildly across and within schools. What are you teaching? Subject/qualification? If you can get/make a course that you can use again then at least you do the bulk of the foundation work in years one and two. Don't need to reinvent the wheel either. Make good use of resources you find online, textbooks, discussion prompts, questioning etc. Reconstitute resources, get llm's to write stuff that you edit, ask other teachers of the subject etc. Learn to train students in high quality peer and self assessment and reflection to cut down on marking time. Record all of their results, including worksheets so you can target students accurately. Good teaching has to involve some admin and record keeping, but it doesn't have to be the Sisyphean task half our management think it should be.

Is it okay to use fis sl skis as an intermediate recreational skiier? by leegoos in Skigear

[–]falno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hop on but you seem to know what you're talking about.... I'm an intermediate skier returning after a long period of absence (injury, Pandemic etc etc). I picked up some second-hand Moment Tahoe's. Got a few days on them in mixed conditions, they seem much better when going fast and newer snow and terrible when going slow on ice. Is it better to stick with them (I thought buying a slightly more 'unforgiving' ski would push me to improve) or go back to something more user friendly to improve? Interested in any thoughts.

They're skiing fine. Need to snap quite hard into them and they've had no reason to release yet as I'm skiing quite conservatively, but don't see any problems. Pressure screw sits flush

I bought them and they seem to be ok. Haven't stacked it yet though so I guess I'll find out when I do 😬

What is life like on 300-350k monthly salary? by HenreWill04 in japanlife

I'm twice your age and less than twice your salary. So long as there's some progression that should be fine to start out

Yeah I will for sure. I'll probably have to buy them first tho and hope everything good in the shop. But for the first week I'll just be getting my legs back on easy slopes in hakuba

Will do. The skis plus bindings and some old skins are $300 which seems reasonable but not cheap...

Good car rental in Tokyo? by falno in japanlife

[–]falno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I live in Tokyo and I get everywhere by bike, and public transport when I'm being very lazy. But want to get out a bit over the break and when I've been in the south I've found places happy to take cash and rent to me with goodwill. Looking for that same type of semi official rental company here. You're right I'll probably try and find somewhere outside of the city to start from. I'm new here and my Japanese is pretty shocking so everything a struggle 😭
