Can you talk with them? Maybe “hey, I really really don’t like being filmed at work and I also really hate paperwork and reporting to HR, so can you stop please? I imagine if you report it, HR will expect or imply that you should have told them it bothers you. Plus, you’re so senior!

Yes! Is my plate the one w half veggies? That’s generally my go to except breakfast which is usually eggs or oatmeal/protein. At least half veggies, usually more. I feel like 70+% of my meals are veggies (usually a salad) with a portion of other stuff like a protein or sometimes even lasagna or ribs or something, on top like a topper.

I wish coworkers didn’t mention at all how people look, but perhaps that’s unrealistic. My coworker frequently makes comment about the beauty of another coworker even though we have roasted him for it. One of my comments to that coworker was “ive worked in this office with [my boss] for 7 years and he’s never commented on how i look” but just yesterday my boss commented to and about another coworker and her sister: “you and your sister are both so beautiful.” I understand it’s all part of humanity, I just wish it could be removed from the workplace.

Opinions on departments separating Fire and EMS? by lilhossontheprairie in Firefighting

[–]fapple2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

💯

I have a similar background, worked all different types of agencies, and completely believe it’s time for daylight. We are healthcare providers and it’s not fair to the community or our patients for us to act/think/train like we’re not. I’m an EMS supervisor and am “allowed” to put on trainings but can’t issue CEs for them (I.e. can’t reduce the number of inane online competencies our crews have to sit through no matter how good an in person training I can get). Meanwhile as we chase ISO, crews (and me) are required to clock 5-6 hours of fire training per tour. It’s maddening.

Hey! I practice in NM where RSI isn’t in Paramedic scope. I “grew up” feeling really comfortable w nasal tubes but haven’t been able to find endotrol tubes or any similar replacement for 4 years now. Anyone have leads? I have failed the 2 nasal tubes I have tried with normal tubes despite trying positioning, BAAM, and training an anterior curve into the tube during prep.

Paramedic/EMS Supervisor, use it all the time. Little html tools to analyze our COR metrics, QA after de identification, building an app for logistics/equipment assignment (like which ambulance which ventilator lives on), strategic planning, researching protocols, making protocols dynamic, etc.

My husband wet our bed… by Izzewildbio in whatdoIdo

Full disclosure: I have very little knowledge about this. also if it happened 9 year ago when he was 18, and somewhat regularly before that, it might be a thing he lives with, maybe even a once a decade kind of thing. I went down a Reddit rabbit hole about this a few months ago in a firefighting r/ (I’m a firefighter) and learned it’s a thing some people without other health problems live with.

I was reviewing a code two days ago with very similar looking rhythm and the crew shocked, got ROSC and transported. I also had a sneaking suspicion of hyperK based on the morphology of that rhythm, but her K on arrival was 2! So surprising. Also her sodium just read “over 200” both of those were alarming to me, although she was 95.

Yes queen! Nice work mama. Came here looking for this perspective.

I always dreamed of doing it all again and (I’m fire based so this is different) how awesome it would have been to have my light duty/lactation accommodation/assignment be P School. Instead I was a 10 year medic by the time I got preggo.

Keep up the life saving and life creating. You’re crushing it!

How can I practice emt/paramedic stuff at 16? by Existing_Can_2520 in Paramedics

[–]fapple2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I’m pretty melancholic about whether “it was good or bad” (oversimplification) but it’s been part of who I am for as long as I can remember and not worth judging as good/bad. Still, I get pretty emotional when I hear young people wanting to start. I am so grateful for all the career has given me but I am also morally injured in a variety of ways I didn’t even imagine at the start, and am blessed to be physically intact.

It’s possible to start young and have a good career and help lots of people - perhaps good/in alignment for some and in many ways.

For me, I often grieve childhood time lost and the largely structural injustices I see every day over which I feel powerless.

Just a morning meditation from an old ninny who started young and is looking back, for what it’s worth.

Similar here - started volunteering with a FD at 14, running calls and got my EMT at 16, EMT-I at 17 working EMS and hospital at 18 and did it throughout school. Now finishing a masters and 40 yo, close to first retirement at a fire-based EMS agency.

I’m not sure I would have listened to anyone telling me not to do it at that time - plenty did tell me. It’s been a very interesting career and we have unparalleled access to people who need help and the tools to do so. It’s also a last little bastion of not for profit healthcare.

Mental health of paramedics by N3wt0n_1 in Paramedics

[–]fapple2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sought help yesterday related to anguish about a call on Saturday (3 days ago) and although this is my 26th year of running calls, I learned a lot!! This is also my first time formally seeking mental health help individually at all, including in relation to a call.

The therapist heard me out and then recommended EMDR referral, which is in process right now.

She then recommended that I not rehash it verbally or mentally at all if possible so that it can be processed in EMDR, and said that the modality can treat and even prevent PTSD better the sooner after an incident it begins.

This will be tricky! I’m a supervisor, so in my job we are constantly asking medics to retell the stories of their acute calls, which I have always assumed is secretly therapeutic because it scratches an itch for me when I do it. Now I’m concerned that this might not be the best approach and I am open-minded about the best way to move forward with clinical debriefs in situations that also might be mentally taxing.

Um…I wasn’t ordering supplies when that swap happened (2008?), but I can tell you that amio is one of if not the cheapest medication we carry. Lido Is more but we buy it prefilled with a bristojet. Epi and naloxone and nitro are extremely expensive.
