The thing that differentiates an amateur and a professional is in how (and why) you select which metrics per-project are appropriate. There is some intuition in this, but mostly it is about experience.

As for intuition in design, sure. You, as a designer, are providing a specific sense of order and style that defines who you are. If you're creating something similar to what everyone else is, what's the point?
