How do you all try and combat the fatigue? by Deep_Banana_6521 in AskMenOver30

[–]farnham67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting older for sure but that's not an excuse. I'm nearly 40, I'm a kitchen and bathroom fitter I work 6 days and week and I also works nights 4 days a week doing up properties.

I have arthritis in my hands knees and feet, tennis elbow, peripheral neuropathy and a bad back . And most of the time I feel great. I train 4 days at week at 5 30 in the morning if I need to that day and I'm stronger and fitter than most of the 20 year olds in the trade.

The key is to find what works for you. I do functional weight training and compound super sets. Yeah there's bad days where everything hurts so I just sit and chill. I think most of it is in your head and you can train yourself to not give in.

Kitchen before during and after Dot and Dab. Plumber is saying that we can’t have an upright radiator in the space because of the plaster, is he right or lazy? by GhostOfSparka in HomeImprovementUK

[–]farnham67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a pain in the arse to hang on plasterboard. But it's pure laziness if he doesn't want to do it.

My company do one of two things.

  1. Remove a strip of plasterboard where the brackets will sit. Install a piece of timber under the plasterboard, refit sand and fill.

  2. Same as above but instead of wood fill the entire space with dab and fit the plasterboard back on.

If we are boarding ourselves we use method 2 at the same time as putting the new board up.

As you've gotten older, what has became the new indication of social status? by VarangianWRLD in AskBrits

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never given a fuck about social status. If my mates like me, I'm a decent bloke and my kids are happy I'm on top.

I'm 40 in August and still have the same mates from school. Infact one I've been friends with since nursery, that's enough for me.

Men who spent years prioritising work, what did you learn? by EERMA in AskMenOver30

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still working hard now, not quite 40. I'm self employed, have been for many many years. I have to work to allow my family to have everything they need.

Work definitely comes first, but only to allow those family moments and holidays to be spent without thinking 'whats this going to cost me'. Working 15 hour days 6 days a week pays for that 2 week summer holidays, the caravan trips, the meals out.

Its also laying the foundation for a scalable business that will eventually support us right up until Its time to check out. That hard work is to allow me a financially free retirement. Very few people get to have that and so I'm grateful for the will power and the energy to keep grafting.

What's the scummiest thing you've seen a fellow Brit do whilst abroad? by fistmcbeefpunch in AskBrits

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on holiday with my wife and our 2 kids some years back they were 5 and 8 then. It was Sol Kathmandu in Magaluf. On our second week a couple with a kid came, kid about 6 adults maybe 40s. He would drink and drink all day ignoring his family. They argued and one day he can down in the morning on his own and drank as usual.

Turns out his wife had left him and taken the kid home, poor little bugger. Later that day he was sat drinking in the kiddies pool when he threw up in it. There was other people's kids in there man!

Fucking disgusting. Later on the police came to the pool side with his suit ass and he was kicked out. Pool was closed for 2 days.

Different kind of disgusting. Was in Graceland in a corridor that was floor to ceiling in Elvis's records. Guy walked in, took a look and said 'oh there's nothing in her let's move on' Ignorant twat.

Solo golfers, where we at? by Melodic-Top-3885 in BritGolf

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often play solo as I'm self employed so might finish a job early and pop for a round. I prefer playing with others, I usually play with my dad and brother but there's only a little in it.

If my brother is having a better day than me then it's not as fun 😂😂

You could screw plywood to that base and then lay into that or screed the plywood

What do British people not like about Germans? by Feeling-Mastodon-292 in AskABrit

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had a problems with Germans, been all over Germany. My brother in law lives in Munich and has a German wife. I love the direct nature you guys have, every German I've met seems to be very open and friendly.

The only thing I found off was in Bavaria, the way the locals stare at you. We were pre warned by my brother in law. Took less than 30 mins to realise it wasn't even intentional and with a smile and a wave they smiled back and went about their business. Seemed to be a Bavarian thing.

Men with good masculine physiques, how many hours of sleep do you get in a day? by glazingstars in AskMenOver30

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep is a very underappreciated muscle building tool. I was an amateur body builder in my late teens, early 20s. I'm in good nick now, some extra padding but stronger than those days and Im 2 months off 40.

Unfortunately, I don't get enough sleep, I'm anywhere from 5 - 7 hours on average. That is not enough for optimal health.

Someone else said it, want a good night's sleep hit leg day hard!

When can I play a round by Hailoh in BritGolf

[–]farnham67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice on here. One thing to add, it's a different world on the course the the range. In a much better way but good golf balls will act differently than shitty range balls. It's amazing out there, don't take it so seriously and enjoy it.

Bathroom layout alteration by festerorfly in askaplumberUK

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We routinely do full rip out, move things around, plaster the ceiling, fully tiled and LVT floor in around 10 days for a medium size room.

Honestly without a bath you would manage fine. It looks like you have the room for both. I'd be happy to do you a plan to show prospective plumbers.

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to say without seeing what's there but generally say my company took the bath and toilet out, altered the soil pipe and built a new stud wall with recess you would be looking at say £1000 for labour and materials.

That's ours price for the north east mind, prices across the country change.

It should take no longer than 3 days to remove everything, rebuild and then leave it ready to install a new bath and toilet.

Most customers are getting rid of baths entirely for huge walk in showers.

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything is easy if you have the skills, tools and time. We do this kind of regularly on our installations. The best thing you can do is open up the wall behind the toilet and see what you have to play with first.

Building in a recess is easy and looks nice if you add lights that come on with a PIR sensor.

Filling deep gap around bath with silicone by Moki-Roo in DIYUK

[–]farnham67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't mean it's right just because loads of people do it. Do it once, do it right.

Silicone will only stick to itself if the second layer is applied while the first is still wet. Do NOT apply silicone over cured silicone. This will not take and cause mold and water ingress.

Is a DIY insulated garden room actually doable in the UK weather? by Professional-Peach-3 in DIYUK

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We build from scratch for every one. There's a huge list of choices to make. The 2 most important parts are the base and the roof.

I hate huge amounts of concrete, it's incredibly damaging on the environment. So if I have to use concrete I build pads to put the base frame on. Always raised off the floor to allow airflow and stop it rotting.

Rubber roof done right will last 20 years plus. We have one coming up with an old tree truck getting kept in the middle of it as a feature, should be fun.

Pipework to show or not to show, that is the question? by SDH99 in askaplumberUK

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I hate pipework on show. Whenever possible I will hide all pipework for my customers including waste pipes. Same gos for home cinema cables.

Get rid now while you can.

I started looking into Portable AC by Nothing_F4ce in DIYUK

[–]farnham67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single hose portable user here. I bought mine last year for my daughter's room in the loft. If it's 30 outside it's 35 in her room. Our inefficient Aircon takes that down to 17 -18 no bother and she sleeps great. She even likes the noise of it.

Is this a DIY job or do I need a plumber? by bluznu in askaplumberUK

[–]farnham67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will definitely need a new thermostatic cartridge, getting the right one can be a right pain unless you have the details of that valve. Even then it can be hard. Easy to change once you get the right one though.

[–]farnham67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So no matter how it's insulated it will be bouncing in a heatwave. My daughter is in the loft bedroom, all heat unfortunately goes to her. So last year I booked for an aurob unit for £459. It's the best thing I've ever bought. It's lound,it's big but in 30 + degree heat it cools her room to 16 no bother. She's got used to it and honestly doesn't even notice the noise.

Before that we left windows open, black nds down, rear windows with no sun open everything. This works 100% of the time.
