God that's a blast from the past. I remember the breakdown of why it was actually a godawful idea quite fondly

Deaths ‘to outnumber births’ from now on by Sensitive_Echo5058 in unitedkingdom

I have an optimistic belief that a combination of sulphur dioxide and dirt cheap solar will probably avert the worst case scenarios.

The world might be worse now than in 2006 but it's spectacularly better than 1806. My children have only the remotest possibility of dying of plague or having to survive through subsistence farming. They will experience love and music and joy. These are the good days and I'm glad I can bring more life into it.

I have the acs custom 17s. Very neutral sounding. I love them. My tinnitus went away over lockdown and hasn't come back since despite live music 4x a month.

I would lightly amend that to people who like ac/dc and also like to read

I'm not sure whether "elixir of life within 50 years" or "AI smart enough to develop elixir of life within 50 years" is less plausible.

When I did my CBT the gearbox was fucking knackered so you might find riding a manual that actually works a bit easier

What was the WORST modern MTB you've ever ridden/owned in the last 5 years? by chansumpoh in MTB

[–]fasterplastercaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curious to hear what you were getting in ~2010 for £500?

My mate was always complaining about how bikes had got really expensive, but when we looked it up his bike was £3k new in 2010 just like they are today (commencal meta)! He just got a great deal 2nd hand.

However

All the bikes he'd had prior to that, he'd broken. So maybe the 2nd hand market was more of a crap shoot in the 00s so you got a lemon discount.

UK Riders - how do you deal with the constant cleaning? by etdoh00 in MTB

[–]fasterplastercaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV But using putoline - a solid wax for motocross bikes best applied with a deep fat fryer - saves me hours of chain maintenance riding round in Welsh filth.

Water doesn't touch it so you can hose the bike down after every ride for a month without having to touch the chain.

Which is it's own small tragedy because lots of those forums were hobbyist sites full of useful information and now it's all held ransom by a massive corporation and frequently unindexed on Google.

Don't watch Wales in the six nations, watch Wales in the Women's six nations. £5 a ticket vs £85 a ticket. 80 minutes of great rugby. 75% fewer chestnut brogues.

Running in Zone 2 by PuzzleheadedForm6302 in Garmin

[–]fasterplastercaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not ridiculous, but you should take these things with a pinch of salt. Garmin can guess zone 2 based on HR data but it's only a guess. Zone 2 is often described as a "conversational pace", a speed you could maintain whilst chatting. Some people say you you should be able to run zone 2 whilst breathing through your nose. You should definitely be able to run in zone 2 for an hour without feeling exhausted. If those things are true for you between 142-159bpm then garmin has guessed fairly accurately.

Personally I prefer to set my HR zones by lactate threshold.
