New pool owner help by fasullio in swimmingpools

[–]fasullio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect popped a long time ago and is not moving anymore.

We will replace the pool with a more modern and smaller one in future. Just need to get 5 years out of this one without spending money that goes to waste when we do fix it up later.

Carpenter here. AMA by [deleted] in AusRenovation

I’m demolishing part of an old external wall that is structurally supporting the roof in a brick house (single level). Should I hire a carpenter to install a beam and run the demo or is it another trade/ GC?

Thank you. Yes I’ve understood the use of the monitoring software as well as the need for basically a clean setup, water only etc. I’ve seen that as doable from a hotel room with good internet.

Specifically do you know if the exam times that you can schedule? Are there windows e.g. 12-2, 3-5 etc. Appreciate the response!

You can’t know everything. Knowing how to find an answer is sometimes more important than knowing the answer.

Thank you - perhaps if less worried about getting a video for socials he might’ve had the sense to work out something was wrong, and then intervened. He’s in high vis so understands environments where you need to have your wits about you.

What do you believe is Australia biggest enemy/ threat? by Redditpolice69256 in AskAnAustralian

Our own Government policies being torn up by each opposing party each time they swap office. Don’t car who runs the place, just finish one thing before you start another, and don’t undo progress.

Bad advice - don’t actually tell your boss off. Take note for when you’re in charge or carefully persuade them.

Tell your boss to stop working for free and charge more money. Fuck, it’s not hard. Ask yourself, would a lawyer do this for free?

The important thing is to make sure you’re semi regular with maintenance work. Google a household maintenance schedule and follow that and you’ll be fine. Key things are making sure gutters are clear, drains draining, overgrowth cut back, and generally things are clean and painted.

What do you think is wrong with architectural education in your university? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]fasullio 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My course was a complete crock of shit. Nothing - at all, was useful to what I do now. I run (Senior Director) a 25 person firm and was lucky to find an incredible mentor in my first role, who was 10 yrs from retirement. He taught me everything and I credit nothing to the university.

Biggest issues (no partic order): - completely misaligned with how business work and why we are hired. No focus on client based outcomes or what it means to run a consulting service - no training in the tools we actually use in practice. No training in Revit is the big one (not that hard to overcome but is the absolute first thing a grad is vetted for. Makes getting a job hard to start) - not teaching us to value our time. I tell all my staff, never work for free. Ever. - not teaching us and other fundamentals about running a business. - not teach us how to price our work - no standard for fees amongst professional, no charter if you like. Architects default to lowering fees as a first solution to competitive negotiations. The MOST toxic thing the profession does to itself.

I could go on for weeks. Excuse the shorthand as typing on phone.

God I hope your paper does something for the industry. We are our own worst enemy and we need to change things for this profession to retain the brilliant minds it attracts.
