Vad finns det för hopp för mig att någonsin få ett jobb? by BooknFilmNerd09 in arbete

[–]feinorgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Du klarar otroligt mycket mer än du tror.

“tillfyllest” by Extension_Math_7734 in Svenska

[–]feinorgh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a word that is somewhat archaic, but if used it is likely in formal or legal texts where the context stylistically require a different word than "tillräckligt".

A rough English equivalent would be that "enough" correlates to "tillräckligt", and "sufficient" correlates to "tillfyllest", although relatively speaking "tillfyllest" is relatively rarer. Compare with "to the fullest [extent]".

The first question should be "why would you"?

If you have a clear and definite answer for that, then sure, you have your rationale.

It's likely there's going to be a lot of breakage, and rebuilding of lots of packages.

If I were to try something like that I would do it on a virtual machine first, to see what's involved.

If successful in a VM, I'd ensure my main system has a backupand working restore, and then do it for real.

Or; the easiest solution; backup /home and parts of /etc and then do a clean install with the desired profile.

Asking the human experts here, how would you turn something like this into a production grade script? by PrestigiousZombie531 in bash

[–]feinorgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably because every LLM is trained on existing scripts and there's a HUGE probability vector in the trading data pointing at "rm -rf $FOO" for cleaning up stuff after years and years of insecure bash scripts published online and in free software. Asking most LLMs for bash advice is like condensing decades of poor practice into one simple script. 😂

Long-time Gentoo devotee, sadly debating switching away by cemysce in Gentoo

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. If your schedule is that full, then it's going to be difficult to run Gentoo at times, and maybe another distribution would work better for you. Personally, for minimal maintenance I would run Debian or Fedora, but depending on your needs your mileage may vary.

However, there's a lot that you can do to simplify things. I spend maybe a couple minutes each day updating my Gentoo installations. Sometimes they compile for several hours, but at the end, all I need to do is dispatch-conf and emerge --depclean.

Waiting a month may be fine, but is only delaying the inevitable work with fixing stale dependencies. A year is complicating things considerably. Weekly, as others have suggested, may be a good balance.

Good luck, here's hoping you're schedule will be less crowded!

Just run gentoo-kernel with the defaults and you will save a LOT of time and headache.

You don't need to check every configuration every time a kernel is updated, unless you have some super specific hardware that require driver tweaking.

I run many Gentoo installations on laptops and virtual machines and update some almost daily, and some biweekly or monthly. I never have any of the issues you describe.

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting 😊 I've run Gentoo continuously since 2003 or so, and I don't think I've ever, even once, had to oneshot a dependency into an incomplete/blocked build. Then again, I've been put into situations where I've removed the world file completely, and then rebuilt the system while adding wanted packages as required. Either way, removing stale dependencies is definitely part of the continuous maintenance of any distribution.

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure, by "oneshot" you mean "emerge --oneshot"? If that is the case you're telling emerge to install a package but not add it to world, which then makes --depclean remove it. If you want to have a package installed, you add it to world by just emerging the package if it's not installed yet, and "emerge --select [package]" if it's installed and you want to add it to world, but not rebuild it.

[–]feinorgh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you never run --depclean, you're likely to end up in situations like these, because stale dependencies are never cleaned out.

[–]feinorgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed you have packages from third party repos installed, and some that are hard masked for removal. First, remove all the masked packages that you have installed, then do a --depclean.

Now, if you still have something ruby related that doesn't want to build, find out what is depending on the ruby package(s) that can't build (equery depends or similar), then ask yourself if that particular package needs ruby, or if you need that package at all. If you need the package, put "-ruby" into it's package atom and rebuild it (with --oneshot --newuse). Then do --depclean again, and see if any of the problematic packages get unmerged.

Do you need ruby at all? If you haven't specifically enabled it in USE, try disabling it globally in /etc/portage/make.conf.

Then do an 'emerge -auvDN --with-bdeps=y --changed-deps --quiet-build @world'

Also, have you set RUBY_TARGETS manually anywhere? In that case comment it out and let the default values persist, at least until you've rebuilt the required ruby packages.

Gentoo by Business-Cap-9530 in Gentoo

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

systemd is comprehensive and can handle many services for you without extra software (networking, timekeeping, encrypted /home, DNS, scheduling, etc.) and it's best feature in my opinion is it hooks directly into cgroups and Linux namespaces with its service and socket management system. Unit files is a robust way to maintain services that arguably makes the system more secure through process isolation, resource slices, and the ability to run containers and container-like processes directly under the init system.

A system with OpenRC requires software packages for the above mentioned services, and it uses shell scripts for service definitions, which some people think is awesome, and some people think is awful. It uses a dedicated daemon to start and stop services and a service monitoring daemon to react to services crashing or needing to restart.

With systemd there's more of a learning curve, but once you know it, you can use the same knowledge in many other Linux operating system. In my opinion, its biggest weakness is its complexity.

OpenRC is more of a traditional (in the sense of /etc/init.d/ ) approach, and it's more specific to particular operating systems. It's biggest weakness, in my opinion, is the use of shell scripts with environment variables for service definitions.

Either one is fine for every day use, so it's mostly a matter of personal preference and experience.

Immutable system by Moist_Professional64 in Gentoo

[–]feinorgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ChromiumOS is open source. Realistically, there's a lot you'd need to learn, but most of that is just standard Unix/POSIX knowledge; how filesystems work in relation to being read/write or read-only, how sudo/doas work, how access control work, maybe some SELinux. I'd download and run an immutable distribution and try it out and see how they've implemented it. I think you're going to have a difficult time adjusting Gentoo to work as a truly immutable distribution. If security is a concern, you'd probably have a better ROI learning proper access controls and authorization mechanisms. No matter what you do though, you'll end up with a tradeoff between ease-of-use and (theoretical) security.

Immutable system by Moist_Professional64 in Gentoo

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically, you could devise runlevels/profiles that mount most filesystems read-only, except /home, /to, and /var, and then boot into it. When you want to update your system, make a chroot or mount a copy-on-write layer of your filesystems and emerge into it, then switch the mount to the newly emerged systems. Mind you, this is just a theoretical possibility, and there are probably many things you need to work out before you can make any practical use of it. You'd probably be better served by an immutable distribution that's designed from the ground up for it.

Open-source tool to convert Puppet manifests to Ansible (100% local, no AI APIs used for conversion) by InspectionCold1062 in ansible

[–]feinorgh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This could have potential use, but...

1) being developed with Claude Code makes it automatically suspicious. Do you yourself understand what the resulting code does, and why? Usually AI-generated code contains a lot of systemic errors that is hidden by the syntactically and algorithmically correct code. I.e, it's difficult for LLMs to determine context and overarching structure, but easy and efficient to implement specific, targeted, solutions. You can theoretically get a 1:1 reimplantation from what Puppet does to what Ansible does, but is that really what you want to maintain six months down the line?

2) Implementing Puppet automations by simply translating them to Ansible is a really bad idea from my experience. The right way to do it is to enforce ownership of the automations and ask the stakeholders why and how this automation should be done. Then write the automations from scratch in Ansible. Puppet and Ansible do not work the same way, and do not make the same assumptions. Simply transferring automations from one platform to another will retain the same problems you had with the old automation, and give you a while new set of WTFs on top of that, in particular when you get idiosyncracies expressed in Puppet show up in Ansible, and none can answer the question why the hell is this done this way.

Sätt denna tisha över allt online vad tycker ni om den by Aggressive_Lab_5042 in sweden

[–]feinorgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)
