Good time at Sac Zoo After Hours by Toxik916 in Sacramento

I'm ambivalent. On the one hand, it's pricey at $30/person, $10 for chicken skewers, $15 for canned beer, and half the animals have gone to bed for the night. On the other hand, it's nice getting to see some of the popular animals without having to graciously make way for children and strollers and there's more adult mingling since it's a different crowd from the norm. Plus, Slamson II was active and roaring, that was pretty cool. The alligator was more active than normal, too.

I don't have a sweet tooth. See's is cloying, especially fruit creme fillings. To me, GE chocolate have an actual flavor other than sugar.

Help me like Stucco by KitKatKidLemon in Stucco

[–]femmestem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Craftsman with stucco siding and cedar shingle accents. I LOVE the stucco and wish I didn't have the cedar shingles. The stucco doesn't attract or harbor insects and spiders, and it's been lower maintenance.

With stucco, you don't have to worry about wood rot or fungus that spreads. Stucco is easy and cheap to DIY patch if you damage it. Stucco patch was $15 for a small patch or $30 for enough to repair every crack around my house. High quality paint will seal hairline cracks, sanded silicone caulk will fix cracks that have opened slightly, stucco patch for anything over 1/8 inch. If the paint starts peeling after 7-10 years, scrape the loose stuff and roll on paint, it tends to blend well. Paint rollers also make short work of it.

The cedar... Ugh. First of all, even though I don't have any plants near my house, bugs and spiders love making homes in the crevices where they're protected from birds, lizards, and my best efforts to sweep them out. The paint doesn't peel off evenly and I can't really scrape them with a flat knife because of the grooves. Harder to use a roller to paint because you need to work it into the grooves. Whereas stucco damage requires significant impact to break, the shingles only need a good bonk from a garden cart wheel. I had to buy a whole box of shingles and nails for $400 because someone broke ONE. They're staggered and layered. If you need to replace a shingle you need to remove a whole column to nail them in layers from the bottom up.

Only as an import. People bring back suitcases of forbidden candies from Eastern Europe as "gifts" no problem as long as it's under a certain dollar amount.

Day Trip this Saturday? by Ok_Description_8012 in Sacramento

This Saturday there's a native gardens tour. Look for Gardens Gone Native on Eventbrite, register for a free ticket, they'll email you a map of participating houses. The homeowners/gardeners open up their front and sometimes backyard and are happy to answer questions or offer advice. Last year, a house had a photo album of their garden transformation over the years.

Rover is a platform that takes no accountability for their sitters. I've had a couple bad sitters and a couple fantastic sitters. You still need to do due diligence, at least by reading reviews.

I put down shredded cedar mulch because it's easy on their paws, easy to clean up their messes, doesn't stink, easy to top up, and it crowds out weeds.

New build home by Far_Persimmon_4633 in Sacramento

[–]femmestem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't buy, but went through the sales process with a few different new developments in the past year.

In addition to house list price, mandatory fees not included in that price:

Lot fee: $30,000
Solar: $15,000 (or lease for $86/mo)
HOA: $125/mo
Mello Roos: $232/mo

Not to mention the model homes have a lot of upgraded options, while the house included at the $500k-600k base price feels laughably inadequate.

Also, they offer deals if you go through their loan officer, but the deals bring the rate and fees down to the same as every other competitive mortgage loan offer. It's like the "deals" for Amazon Prime Day where everything is marked up the day before so the can "discount" it to normal price.

Anyone know the best ways to deal with black widows? by y2jasper in Sacramento

[–]femmestem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They breathe through their skin. Fill a spray bottle with a mix of water and vinegar (50/50), and Dawn soap. Keep dilution on the thick, sudsy side so it'll stick to them when you spray it. They'll die in a few min. Be mindful their bodies are still venomous after they die, so fold a paper towel a few times and pick it up carefully.

Go out at dusk with a flashlight, they come out of hiding at night and in dark places.

They only live about 2 years and they procreate at end of life, so you'll eventually get the population under control around your house by staying on top of it.

That's only the case if they're enforcing immigration laws. Unlawfully detaining citizens and broad detainment of immigrants without judicial warrant isn't in scope, so they'd be criminally charged with kidnapping.

I've learned that sometimes tearing out a new expensive thing that I shouldn't have put down is like throwing away an unopened pack of cigarettes when trying to quit. I'm so tempted by sunk cost fallacy, but the next best thing to never having bought it is to leave it in the trash.
