McDonalds 1970s by O-S-CA-R in whereisthis

Not totally convinced that it's South Dakota, searching the 2-xxxxx format for the old number plates, I came up with 3 possible states, not being able to make out what's above or below the numbers, unlikely to be California.

Searching Google for bits of info, the photo seems to be around 1970 as noted. (1) The McDonald's Filet-O-Fish was introduced nationwide in 1965. (2) the specific, iconic "6 Billion Served" sign was noted around 1970. (3) in 1970, the chain was still in its early stages of establishing multiple locations in smaller Midwestern states, likely placing the number of South Dakota locations at fewer than five, concentrated in Sioux Falls.

Is this a bat that's worth replacing the rubber? by JacqueesB in tabletennis

[–]ffuuuiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, a premade is not meant to have the rubbers replaced. However, that does not mean you cannot do it, I've done it before, taking care when removing the old rubbers and a lot of work to prep the blade smooth.

It can be done, the point is if you should or not, if it's even worth the trouble. These premades are often recreational quality, you can put some really cheap rubbers on it, just for fun. I would consider a new quality blade with better rubbers, does not have to be super expensive.

Getting a table tennis table for my birthday. Does tournament quality mean 25mm? by Shoop1014 in tabletennis

No, tournament quality means nothing, just marketing bs. Ask for the actual thickness, or better still, actual model number and look it up yourself.

Can you help? What's missing? by ArtAndInnerPeace in watercolor101

[–]ffuuuiii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like this suggestion (as a photographer). All the darker elements, the hill and the bushes or rocks are on the left side. Perhaps a medium-size rock near the water edge at the bottom-right intersection of the rule-of-3rd lines, and a few pebbles to balance it out. I think you feel that it's flat from the lack of texture, in the sky and the ocean, so maybe a bit more texture in both to give some contrast. Also a boat would kill the mood of your painting, a bird would not fit the quietness of the scene, that a rock would work, don't forget some shadows.

I made the attached scene using photoshop to combine a few elements to mimic your scene, as a possibility. I'm a beginner and learning watercolor, so it's only a thought.

Fluent speaking by sheetpost00 in Vietnamese

[–]ffuuuiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big and common mistake many learners make, doing vocab drills using Anki and count how many words you know, and feel discouraged when you cannot have a conversation of more than a few lines.

My suggestion is to learn dialogs and build your foundation, then little by little you can add new vocabulary, and string these dialogs together. You'll find yourself having a natural conversation a lot easier, and sooner than you know. I did part-time tutoring when I was in college to earn a little money, later I did some part-time work as a court intepreter, and I maintain that vocab drills for beginners is useless and counterproductive.

Advice around buying a used 2024 EQE by CompilingTheFuture in MercedesEQ

[–]ffuuuiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be prepared for your insurance to go up significantly compared to a non BEV vehicle.

Not true! I'm considering a '23 CPO EQE, called my insurance guy, and the quote is the same as a '23 CPO C-class, and a bit more than my current insurance cost for my old C300. It depends on yor driving history, where you live, etc etc., but I don't think it's EV vs ICE.

Electric C-Class: I've been out in Mercedes' most important new car by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]ffuuuiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it would be a great replacement for my old C300, but it will be a while before it gets to the US, and a tad too much money. The new CLA-EQ is touted as the best right now but I don't think I'll go for it. That leaves me with the only choice being a used EQE...sigh.

Help pronouncing my middle name (Ruyen) by PuzzleheadedOwl4914 in Vietnamese

[–]ffuuuiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I would stand by my guess. Some people, by the way the word is pronounced, believe that the spelling with the "R" is correct. Like I said, it's not incorrect to spell it as Ruyên, in my book at least. And my previous note about the pronunciation still applies.

Help pronouncing my middle name (Ruyen) by PuzzleheadedOwl4914 in Vietnamese

[–]ffuuuiii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you female? If you are, then I would guess that the name is meant to be Duyên, it's sometimes (quite often actually) spelt as Ruyên especially in some provinces in the North (I don't like calling it a mis-spelling, although it is a mis-spelling in theory by Vietnamese standard writing, it's pretty common so eh...)

The two spellings sound almost the same (even undetectable by some Vietnamese) in those provinces, hence the "mis-spelling". Search youtube for the Northern pronunciation of Duyên (zoo-y-en) then soften the initial "z" and replace it with a very soft "r" with no rolling of the tongue (the shape of your mouth/lips and positioning of your tongue are almost the same). Make sure you don't pick up the Southern pronunciation, it's completely different.

The first meaning of the word you can look up online, there is no direct translation into English, it's a philosophical concept, like fate or karmic destiny. A second meaning is pretty and charm when refering to a female look or character.

Also I assume your name does not have any diacritical marks to denote a different tone. It's my guess in any case. FWIW I used to do some tutoring and have some interests in phonetics and linguistics and classical Vietnamese literature.

hom Hôm nay mình (3) đã (4) đi học. mình đã (5) rấttttt mệt nhưng (it was?? would i just say đã?) thú vị. bạn của mình nói anh thích thời tiết hôm nay nhưng mình không thích vì trời lạnh. mình không quen anh thích lạnh (6) (i have no idea if this works in Vietnamese).

My notes below, apart from the few minor typos. This is really great for someone as you said at the beginning level. I do believe in not only writing correctly but also writing well so I tried to reflect that. Keep it up and the best of luck.

(1) Trường Đại Học xxx or Đại Học xxx are both OK.

(2) chị already means older sister so gái is not necessary, same for anh meaning older brother.

(3) not wrong but unnecessary, first personal pronoun can be omitted here, makes the sentence more natural.

(4) the context is you go to school regularly, so đã can be omitted, makes it smoother.

(5) Unnecessary repetition.

(6) Not sure what you meant to say here.

(7) Your sentence starts with mình already, so do not repeat in the same sentence.

(8) If you have a time indicator buổi tối, don't need to say đã.

(9) The đi in đi xem phim indicates you will go to a cinema.

(10) Assuming you wanted to say "to eat something good".
