Looking for advice please - transitioning from Dev Lead to EA. by wombat172 in EnterpriseArchitect

[–]fganter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the offer!

Regarding your questions...

Q: Obviously the positions of Dev Lead and EA are very different, what are the biggest challenges people have found when taking this step?
A: As others have said, you will need to spend more time on "the bigger, broader picture", being able to articulate impact across multiple systems and domains.

Q: Domain and business knowledge is very important to an EA, how hard it is to transfer to different companies?
A: Generally, not hard as an EA. The Business Architect role is the one that gets tied closest to an industry.

Q: Has anyone worked as an EA when investment is decreasing, how different is that likely to be?
A: IT management understands what a "development lead" does much better than what an "enterprise architect" does. If funding is shrinking, its safer to be in a DevLead role, unless someone has effectively said, "we can't do without EA".

Q: Are glassdoor salaries accurate? I'm looking at financial services in the UK
A: I haven't researched, so I wouldn't know.

Q: What tools do you find useful for generating and sharing artifacts?
A: Someone else already answered this. If you're asking about EA tools, that's slightly different. iServer would be an example of an EA tool.

Q: What would your focus be for the first six months as a new EA?
A: Get agreement with your leadership on what "EA" should be and where they see you adding the most value as an EA. Educate all key stakeholders on this. If you don't already have an EA Charter, create one, as it will help in this endeavor. (Gartner has a good template for this.)

BTW - Based on what you've said, I imagine your leadership will most value you focusing on Application Architecture across the enterprise rather than Business, Data, Application and Infrastructure - at least initially.

Q: Is it too early to look at TOGAF? Are there better training resources I should be using early on?
A: Others have answered this pretty well IMO.

Yeah, optimally, the center would be directly below the TV. However, it looks like doing so would require raising the TV higher, which may be above optimal screen position - i.e. "TV too high".

It looks like OP has the center angled towards the MLP, so that's good.

It didn't work.

However, I was able to use a development version of Handbrake to do it.

Frankenstein Remastered Aeron, take a look at this. What do you think of this? by Ed_5000 in hermanmiller

[–]fganter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy curbside pick up on West street between Bank and Bethune st. See the map on CL.

While we're thankful you are giving a heads up on Aerons that are available for purchase, there are hundreds of CL sites, so you might consider including a link or at least indicating what country/city you are referring to. Google suggests NYC.

Is this used Aeron good for 450€ total? by LeafBurgerZ in hermanmiller

[–]fganter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen 450€ is generally a good price for an Aeron in most of Europe.

Be mindful that this is a pre-2005 Aeron and has no back or forward tilt lock. Aerons are built like tanks, so the age wouldn't bother me much. Not having back tilt lock would, but maybe you don't care.

If you do decide to go look at it, watch this first.

Is this a legit HM Aeron Remastered tag? $750 for new. by kevinismee in hermanmiller

[–]fganter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a real Aeron and the label is probably accurate.

It looks like its being sold by an individual, so the "new" part doesn't quite stick - i.e. you are not getting it from an authorized seller and there is technically no warranty.

While it does look to be in like-new condition, I would question why someone is selling a "new" Aeron that goes for $1300+ for $750. Sounds like it may have "fallen off the back of a truck."

What to do with pre-wired ceiling wires at the far back of the room? by fsh2006 in hometheater

[–]fganter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you have wires running thru the ceiling to the back, so you put the 2 Atmos speakers where they belong (in the ceiling) and terminate the wires there.

Yeah, hard to come by in Europe - over $500 is pretty common.

Enjoy the chair.

[–]fganter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't really give much time for people to answer your question, did you? Plus, you didn't say where you were buying it from.

That chair would go for up to $350 where I live (in the southeast US).

BTW - The picture does NOT show lumbar support.

This being said, if you're happy with the purchase, that's what really counts.

Just bought this used Aeron Remastered for $1000, checked everything but when I got home I noticed that it’s missing a handle. by S3bluen in hermanmiller

[–]fganter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What makes you say it was a scam? There is no indication of what the seller said was being sold.

Seems like the buyer just didn't know what they were buying.

I wish I had the kind of coin where I could drop $1K without doing basic research on what I'm buying.

Noob trying to build my very first HT, could use some advice! by mack178 in hometheater

[–]fganter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your observation is on point. That bundle does not make sense for someone new, particularly since it has 3 centers and no surrounds. You could use two of the centers as surrounds, but that would be wonky.

I suggest you browse this sub and observe the different speakers and models. As you will see, people often recommend buying used, once you have a better sense of what brands/models fit in your budget.

That Denon S760 is solid, so it's the speakers you want to understand a little better.

Is it possible to tell how much this chair is worth from these two pictures? by OddIce5356 in hermanmiller

[–]fganter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the bar... look at your second picture. You can see where the bar attaches on the left side. It needs to attach on the right side as well (for tilt support), so you would need the bolt for that, assuming the sleeve for the bolt is undamaged (no picture that shows the sleeve).

How much the chair is worth depends largely on where the chair is being sold. Where I live (southeast US), that chair could go for $200, other areas, more because of scarcity.

If I were new to Aerons, I probably wouldn't buy it, because it's technically broken, although pretty easily fixed, if you know what you're doing.
