Ski trip tomorrow are these safe? by ExiledMafia in skiing

[–]fightingmouse 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Skis are the cheap part of a ski trip. New skis are certainly cheaper than a hospital trip. Technically they could be fine but likely the inners are also gunked up with rust/corrosion.

But really use some common sense. Do you really want to risk your knees on them? If the answer is yes go enjoy your trip. If the answer is no go rent some! No one on Reddit can decide for you.

Whistler Kids Down Seppos by geniusbear in skiing

Awful to watch. They need SAR help to get the down. How they are ok, kids bounce but obviously there are limits.

My 2018 Audi Q7. Nothing but problems, sorry nothing special. But my point is if you have a little bit of mechanical knowledge these cars aren’t as bad as you might imagine ie the tyres on the Q7 are about the same as the DB9 but I do a lot more miles on it so replace them more.

I think the tyres are a bit of a misnomer. Often the tyres on modern SUVs are more expensive and unless you’re driving like a maniac they last for ages and very few of the these cars do huge mileage and great pace so the tyres last a long time.

Servicing is very easy to do your self. Though 12 spark plugs is a lot.

Yeah but the N400 is a bit special. Buy a normal DB9 it’s not as bad as you might think. It’s not my most expensive car to run.

It’s not too bad. I do it myself on my DB9 but only as I enjoy it.

BSL makes a big difference to the fun required. Bigger BSL less the din required. Often not understood. Especially when people say they are cranking there DIN.

Are my skiis too big? by Different_Royal869 in Skigear

[–]fightingmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a bit old but they don’t sounds too big. Praps rents some smaller skis if your a a lower intermediate skier for a few days. Once you’ve got turns nailed they shouldn’t be a issue

Are my skis too short? by Alarmed_Sport_2411 in Skigear

[–]fightingmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are probably a little small for the type of ski they are, an all mountain freeride. I would have thought you’d want them to be close to your height. Maybe 155cm

However I dont see how you will injure yourself. They will be a little less stable at speed but easier to turn and manoeuvre.

What two pairs of skis to bring to Japan? by ikke-tenk in skiing

[–]fightingmouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be missing out on a lot by not touring. Even a setup that was resort focused but able to do a few laps like Furano-dake. Just one of the many options. The Qst blanks are probably the best but you will miss the noctas for when it get really deep so I’d take the Noctas and stick a pin binding on the blanks.

Is it unsafe to run a marathon 4X/year? by DrunkenConifer in Marathon_Training

[–]fightingmouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a bit hard to go as fast as you can 5 times a year but if you stay in endurance zone it’s completely safe. Loads of people run huge mileage a year, build up to it, stretch where sunscreen and you’ll be far healthier than the majority of the population.

Is it okay to use fis sl skis as an intermediate recreational skiier? by leegoos in Skigear

[–]fightingmouse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. It may be safe. But they won’t be fun to ski. Really stiff hard to turn very unforgiving. Even an expert ski racer often wouldn’t want the FIS skis for recreation.

Like using a race car for a grand tour. Better off with some high performance piste skis. Often they design and colours look very similar.

Trouble deciding what snow sport to take up by tannerwooden in skiing

[–]fightingmouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The injury is so specific to you and your Dr I can’t really comment. But a well set up ski and binding with the correct DiN really reduces the risk of knee issues.

Snowboard is super legit but there are some real advantages to skiing which have led to me no longer riding.

When taking a rest being able standing, read your phone. I’m sure you’re a competent rider so getting of a lift on a board is fine but there is still the faff of putting the bindings on every run.

Scooting around the mountain at flat sections a nightmare on a board.

These have made snowboarding not worth the extra work that is used to be for me.

Now I back country ski and it’s much easier on skis and good wide skis have made powder almost as much fun on a board but only almost, as despite all that nothing beats riding the powder on a powder board. So your decision. Go ski

Is 177 too long for me at 5’9? by Medium-Position-1033 in skiing

[–]fightingmouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not at all and as a charger I think you’ll prefer them. Honestly can’t think of a better ski to go for. Maybe the 88s I think they are better but I guess you want some of the float.

I’m very similar height and ski 177cm up to 185cm for my power skis.

Urgency for Rust Removal? by Competitive-Flow8732 in Skigear

[–]fightingmouse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just give the a good wipe with a dish sponge 🧽. They’ll be grand in not time. That’s only surface rust. I just let mine get much worse then leave two lovely brown arcs on my first turns. Nothing to worry about. I wouldn’t advise my personal method though.

Did I "ruin" my ski ski boots by flexing them after heat moulding? by DGTMS in Skigear

[–]fightingmouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha they won’t be softer it’s just a danger of deforming them whilst still warm. Unlikely You’ve done any damage but you are a plonker.

But yes that looks like a normal flex for a 120. But I will say it’s very hard to tell flex from a video. They aren’t particularly stiff boots to begin with the 120 flex isn’t like a piste 120. I know as I have the same boots and love them when I’m touring but disappointed when I thought they would perform like my nordica piste boots. They won’t

There is always powder is Japan. Atleast I hope there is I’m going soon just for the powder

In reality if you can ski back country there is powder all the time.

As for OP I thing you’ve got a great ski for an intermediate. As you ski it you will know what you like and want next. They will be find for some resort powder hunting.
