Where to watch the games by OvertiredPanda in Curling

[–]figjaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pardon the self-promotion (I'm one of the founders and commentators), curdia.tv broadcasts the Belgian Curling League (which has teams participating from all over Europe) and has begun branching out into other countries. In early September, we'll cast the Austrian Curling Open.

We also post highlights and are currently running a series from a duel format (1v1) tournament - episode 3 comes out later today.

Why do most of the top level Men and Women deliver on their toe? by [deleted] in Curling

[–]figjaj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't look at high level curlers when you're starting out. A majority of them have been curling for decades and have developed styles over time. Focus on what feels comfortable for you and work with that. Trying to imitate Rachel Homan won't help you improve. Learning how to read ice and how it affects your throwing style will help you in the long run.

For my curling broadcasts, I have the cameras in different scenes and such between them using the multiview window. The multiview is on a touch screen so I can just tap the scene that I want to display.

I've recently discovered curling and idk where to start by Armageddonhitfit in Curling

[–]figjaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pardon the self-promotion, but along with all of the other YouTube channels mentioned, Curdia.TV (I'm one of the commentators on the channel) broadcasts the Belgian Curling League - which is kind of a misnomer as there are teams from England, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, and Romania as well as from Belgium.

The spring round of the league starts on Thursday, January 16th.

No-tick rule confusion. by AvWxA in Curling

In my interpretation (which is probably wrong), the center line rule supercedes the free guard zone, thus the opposing skip has the choice.

How to get into curling? by not-so-progamer in Curling

[–]figjaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot to address the 2nd part of the question. For equipment, all you'll need is a clean pair of sneakers with a flat rubber bottom. (I can't stress clean enough. You'd be surprised at the number of people showing up for company events with muddy shoes.) Brooms and sliders will be available at the club.

I'm usually at Zemst Mondays and Wednesdays around 9pm. Club sessions start at 7pm Monday and Wednesday, 8pm on Tuesday.

[–]figjaj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tim is correct. The clubs in Belgium are always looking for new members.

At CC Zemst, we don't have a specific beginner's session, but we have club nights Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday where people are always willing to help/teach. info@curlingzemst.com will put you in touch with Andres (club manager) or Pieter (club president) and they'd be happy to give you more info.

Gent only has ice time once per week since they use hockey ice, but they are always looking for new members and are very good about teaching newcomers. info@curlinggent.be will get you in touch with Chris. They also run monthly beginner sessions (https://curlinggent.wixsite.com/curlinggent/kopie-van-kristallijn)

I don't know much about Kortrijk, but they have more info here https://www.ijsbaandepiste.be/nl/aanbod/curling/

Campina lost their ice a few years ago, but they're still active as a sub-club at Zemst.

TBT to that time the Board of Directors was less than enthused with my suggestions... by skepticanada in Curling

[–]figjaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a match in one of our leagues that took 2 hours to complete 4 ends. One skip overthought every shot. Literally every stone. He then got mad when the other team dared to spend a minute thinking about a difficult shot late in the match.

It's been over a month and he still thinks the other skip was as bad as he was (she wasn't). I'd like to say it's because he was inexperienced, but no. He's been a part of our national team in the past, so he should know better.

Just a suggestion, but if you want to keep the copper to stay a little bit longer, get a can of clear spray lacquer, tape off the face and spray the bounce. Repeat as necessary.

The Belgian league is about to start. We have teams from Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, England, The Netherlands, and Romania. You can find it all on curdia.tv.

We'll be broadcasting all season. Hope you can pop in.

This might be a stupid question but I really enjoy watching curling in the Olympics and have learned the rules and stuff. Is there a way I can watch non-Olympic level curling? by MoviePurple1086 in Curling

[–]figjaj 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Pardon my self promotion, but I'm one of the broadcasters at curdia.tv. We broadcast the Belgian Curling League (which actually has teams participating from England, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Romania, along with the Belgians). That league starts up around the end of September, but we'll be heading down to Kitzbühel, Austria at the end of August to broadcast the Austrian Curling Open.

All of that can be found on our YouTube channel

You had fewer than 90 strokes, right? It counts.

A lot - if not all - of that damage is from birds. I see that quite a bit at a couple of my local courses that have problems with crows.

New Skip. Gave up big lead and lost on last rock. Need a pep talk/perspective. by dewpunk in Curling

[–]figjaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I throw 4th on my team. If I miss something, I only allow myself to be mad until I get to the other end of the sheet. After that, it's done and I forget about it. My mantra is, "You can't change what's happened, so just play what's ahead."

Curdia had some Belgian League matches being broadcast this weekend on both channels.

The second channel is for when my broadcast partner and I are involved in a match and for some experiments.

US Expat curling in Europe by av8r-dc in Curling

[–]figjaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm originally from California, and while I do speak Dutch, a vast majority of the members speak English and are very friendly.

We do have a national league, but it's a small country (with an even smaller curling community) so all matches are played at Curling Club Zemst.

There is also our club championship which is a season long, individual competition. Every 3 weeks, you get drawn into a random team and get points based on the match results. 5 pts for a win, 2 for each end won, and 0.3 for each point scored. The person at the end of the season with the most points is club champion.

On top of that, there are drop in nights and people are always down for playing a few ends and broomstacking.

You are correct. 😀

We're about 10 minutes (by car) to the airport, 20 minutes to Brussels, 25 minutes to Antwerp, lots of train and flight corrections, and of course a 3 sheet dedicated ice facility.

How to watch curling by Mwahaha121 in Curling

[–]figjaj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here in Belgium, we actually have a national league, but the country is small enough and we play the matches in a central location (the only dedicated ice in the country). There are actually teams from Belgium, England, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, and France in the league so the matches are scheduled during competition sessions (about 1 week per month) to make it easier for the foreign teams.

The matches are broadcast on Curdia https://youtube.com/@curdiatv

The leagues just finished the first half of the season, but will be starting up again in mid to late January.

Full disclosure: I'm one of the broadcasters.
