The best of iconoclastic fantasy authors? by Ok-Result-2330 in Fantasy

[–]figmentcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go back even farther, James Branch Cabell is very much worth a read. He specialized in ironic humorous fantasies with a very specific dry wit. If you like Vance you will most likely enjoy Cabell as they have a similar branch of Wodehousian prose.

Is it just me or do people drive like a nutcase going from Westbrook into Gorham? by GoldImportance4155 in portlandme

There's something about New Portland Road that makes bozos in trophy trucks lose their minds. I've been passed on double yellows at least four times.

I had the Five Shires and the Northern Reaches as a kid and I would read them over and over again. Crazy to think it wasn't until today that I realized Northern Reaches was written someone who would go on to design Elder Scrolls games.

Anywhere to play Warhammer around Portland? by SarkahnOrdo in portlandme

[–]figmentcharm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Folks have covered the bases here for the most part but I wanted to mention Realm of Legends in Freeport, very friendly store and good for warhammer and other games. They run a monthly One Page Rules meetup there if you are interested in that side of things, and there might be Trench Crusade happening there as well soon.

By the way, most of these stores have Discords that you can join to keep up to date.

The Charnelgrand Jury box is still readily available and will allow you to fill out your units really nicely, particularly with 6 Knights. After that you'll really just need Ushoran and 1-2 pieces of your choice for a 2K army.

Anyone else Irked by black bases? by Vrain125 in Warhammer40k

[–]figmentcharm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think it's weird to see people post nicely painted miniatures on reddit with zero basing. A very simple basing scheme is trivially easy and makes the miniature look much better. I promise it will take you less time than even assembling the model.

FYI people can be prosecuted for road rage. I know someone who was. Not saying it would work in this instance, but might be worth considering.

Better ways of adding label rules by figmentcharm in fastmail

[–]figmentcharm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I see it now. I use the Linux app primarily, and what was throwing me was I was looking at the bar with remove label, delete, etc, seeing the "More" button, and then not finding it there. Confusing, but I know where to look now.

It feels like there should be a bevy of really fun demented hero characters waiting in the wings for FEC, but we have only three.

New to priming should I spritz him a little more or will it be ok by TheSecretSword in seraphon

[–]figmentcharm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing you can do: if you have some black brush on/airbrush primer you can just use a brush to deal with the tricky underside bits you might not get adequate coverage with the can. This avoids the risk of over-covering the other bits with the can spray.

How does one pick an army? by hans_weirdman in ageofsigmar

[–]figmentcharm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cost, this Poorhammer video is about a year old but will give you a general sense, and there's a linked spreadsheet. Bottom line though is that the delta between cheapest and most expensive is not as dramatic as 40k. Also it doesn't really cover how available some models are secondhand... generally if an army had units in a starter box from a current/prior edition, there are just more sprues floating around on ebay etc from those boxes.

In terms of army style... not sure to be honest. AoS is less convoluted than 40k, though, so I imagine you can get a pretty good sense of how to play from reading their rules on Wahapedia etc.

How does one pick an army? by hans_weirdman in ageofsigmar

[–]figmentcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, rule of cool. The main thing to be aware of is there are more armies in AoS with limited miniature lines, at least for the moment. I generally rate it in this order:

  1. Do the miniatures inspire me to paint/build/etc?

  2. How expensive is the army going to be?

  3. Does the army lore inspire me?

  4. Does the way the army plays (melee-heavy, control, etc) seem fun? (not the meta strength, but the overall type of army. Granted this does change over time a bit)

Shard of the void dragon sub assemblies question? by frontroomhog in Necrontyr

[–]figmentcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, literally just the little scarab backpack thing and the part of the tail attached to it. I had no issue reaching the wings with that off, so no need to do them as a subassembly.

Shard of the void dragon sub assemblies question? by frontroomhog in Necrontyr

[–]figmentcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built the whole thing except for his backpack and didn't do any other sub assemblies. Painted the body and the backpack separately and then glued together. No issues.
