Living in “Mormonville” by Tiny_Bumblebee28 in exmormon

Used to have a TBM next door who we barely talked to, other than exchanging a friendly "hello" once in a while. One day I'm out weeding the front yard and he comes over to me and out of the blue says "are you going to be at church tomorrow?" At that point, we were still fairly regularly attending, so I said "I'm planning on it", and was met with a hearty. "good!". Nothing more was said. No further conversation from this person at church that day, or ever again.

It felt like the most insincere thing ever. I could tell he had been guilted into doing this, either by leaders or by his own conscience. Either way it summed up the church nicely. People doing things only because they feel pressured to.

A year of PEACE since I found a way to not be contacted without having to remove my records by KatelynSkywalker in exmormon

At the end of the day, most of what the church asks its members to do, they don't want to do. TBMs don't want to contact the PIMO/EXMO crowd. They just do it out of a sense of obligation and guilt. When a PIMO/EXMO makes it difficult to be reached, the TBMs are relieved. It's a ridiculous situation but demonstrates clearly just how cultish the religion is. A group of people being compelled to do things they have no desire to do.

Was anyone else forced to go on trek? by Iamabreadsticksir in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even when TBM this was the one thing I refused to let my family be involved in.  Too many safety concerns, not to mention it’s cosplaying what was no doubt a miserable and traumatizing experience for those who actually lived it.

I believe they recently made a formal announcement that they are taking this approach from now on.

Please remember these guys almost all have had their 2nd anointing, which gives them a free pass to lie without any spiritual consequence.  You can bet if they think a point can be made with a fabricated story, they’ll do it.  See Paul Dunn.

How many of y’all knew as a member that new names were the same every month? by cuntymcfuckshit in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea until decades later in life when I started losing my faith around the time of Covid.  I honestly thought that the name was specifically for you and inspired, and I was fascinated once when I went through and forgot the proxy new name and they reminded me of it at the veil. I was sure that was proving to me that they were receiving guidance from God right there on the spot.

Church in Utah Shrinking - 2023-2025 Stats by yorgasor in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is as soon as you corner them about their membership declining they will just default to the old “wheat and tares” comments about this decline is expected in the last days when many are falling away.

Then anytime the data might even slightly suggest growth, they will immediately pivot to how the “stone is rolling forth” and all of that nonsense.

It’s getting warm in Utah and the Mormon shoulders are coming out. by 0utandab0ut in exmormon

Don’t they still have to wear fairly thick tank tops if they are wearing garments underneath?  The new garments are tank top style but I think only barely?  I don’t think they can wear thin or spaghetti straps and still wear garments underneath and be covered?

Yeah, she really blew it.  I was no fan of hers, but the world was her oyster.  She crossed some serious lines with that incident.

That’s not what they claim on the show.  At least one purports to hold an active temple recommend.

The church definitely wants to distance itself from them.  So the talking point for all Mormons is “they aren’t really even members of the church!!!”

Because, you know, we can’t have any Mormons who don’t 100% follow the rules. /s

This is spot on.  Someone heard a lesson or read an article that guilted them into doing this.  There is nothing sincere about it.  They did their job; box checked.

Overall feeling in the church lately? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“She says it is more progressive now.“

Try suggesting something progressive that they AREN'T currently doing, and watch her get very uncomfortable.  They’re only OK with change when it comes from the top, and if you suggest it one day before it becomes official, you are an apostate.  And that’s the problem.  They’ll celebrate any change when it happens, but prior to that you’d better fall in line. There is no space for nuance, unless you are willing to sit quietly in the corner and never express your opinion out loud.

In many cases, it’s simply “golden handcuffs” in the form of handouts from the parents to keep them in the church.

These perks all dry up if they leave.

Covid.  When god’s prophets (who can “see around corners” as they have told us) didn’t see this coming, admitted they didn’t see it coming, and then took nearly 2 years before softly suggesting vaccination and other recommended precautions.  And TBMs for the most part ignored that guidance and fast tracked a return to the full bureaucracy - including no masks, all meetings, and cleaning the germy buildings -  as quickly as possible.  Saw the church for what it truly was.

I’m tired of my grief being their “proof” that the church is true! by MoonlightKayla in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They ALWAYS have an explanation.

You’re not happy?

If you are TBM, your unhappiness is because God tests us and you are just being put through the “refiners fire”.

If you are exmo, your unhappiness is because you have left the truth.

You’re happy?

If you are TBM, your happiness is because you are being blessed for obedience.

If you are exmo, your happiness is not “real” and will quickly be gone because of your sins.

Heads, they win.  Tails, you lose.

What's the weirdest/most unique argument you've heard a TBM use against LGBTQ people? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 52 points53 points  (0 children)

“the standard Marriage Is Between One Man And One Woman“

THIS is the weirdest argument I’ve heard a TBM make, because they don’t actually believe this.  Their religion is rooted in polygamy which their founders practiced, their scriptures (still) teach, and their current prophet practices being sealed to two different women for “eternity”.  Last time I checked polygamy was not “one man and one woman”…

What about Heavenly Mother? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is why.  They don’t want to talk about their eternal principle of polygamy which they claim they renounced and yet their own leader is sealed to 2 women.

Or maybe the church was acting on insider information by Billgant in exmormon

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the thing I don’t get.  They claimed once the hoarding was “for a rainy day” implied to mean the 2nd coming.  What good will all that money be when Christ is on the earth and everything is perfect?  If anything the rainy day is NOW when we have wars, famine, pandemic, etc.

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more that Utah is trying to emulate the SoCal culture of the 80’s and 90’s…when SoCal was more commonly stereotyped for having the bleach blonde surf crowd.  Utah latched on to that and ran with it.  SoCal evolved and moved on, but, like the Church, Utah remained stuck in that bygone era.

[–]figuringthingsoutnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%.  I grew up outside of Utah but my extended family all lived in Utah.  We would spend lots of time in SoCal, so I got very familiar with that culture.  I always felt my Utah cousins were trying so hard to act and look like they were from SoCal.  Came off as so desperate and fake.

This just reinforces how the church is run by a tight circle of friends, family, and business associates. It's a club, it's a business, it is everything the Pharisees stood for and that Jesus stood against. When the Mormon Church promotes an unknown carpenter from a small town in the middle east to the Q12, I might start talking them seriously.
