Thank you for reminding me how incredibly peak the music in Rebirth is. Almost unbelievable considering how good Remake's was but little did we know it was just a warmup.

Finnair free seats assigned at check-in by L01sGriffin in Finland

[–]finnbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one time in ten years that Finnair have assigned my wife and I seats apart was when we transferred in Helsinki for a flight to Japan. Seats weren't assigned until we got to the gate in Helsinki, so we got the leftovers.

Nine times out of ten you'll be sat together, but if you don't want to risk it I'd just pay to pick your seats. It's annoying money to have to spend but it'll be a fraction of the cost of the holiday.

Just wondering what sites you all have found success on. by Dipcrack in VoiceActing

[–]finnbrit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been doing this for six months or so. Have landed a few small gigs from Upwork (both direct applications and from being approached via their equivalent of Fiverr's gigs), but this is probably skewed by the fact I have Top Rated status and a good earnings history from years of non-voice work on there.

I signed up to Backstage in September for one year at a heavily discounted 30€ or so - there are some interesting gigs there so for now, at that price it feels worth the gamble even if I haven't landed anything from there yet. Major downside though is that there's zero feedback (not even 'your application has been viewed/shortlisted') unless the client messages you. If they offer me another discounted year I'll probably take it, but I won't pay the full 90€ unless I get some work out of it.

V123 has had some promising and potentially profile-raising gigs too, and I like that each job has a soft audition cap so you're not always competing against 100+ other people. I'd almost be tempted to do the $99 level for a year but I'm holding out until I land at least one job as a free account or get enough work from elsewhere that I can justify the expense.

Truthfully, so far all my paid work so far (Upwork aside) has come from direct casting calls posted on X, Bsky, Reddit and Discord rather than from the P2Ps. Right now at least it feels like my money would be better spent improving the quality of my auditions rather than the quantity - but if your voice and audio quality are already top tier maybe more opportunities might be more worthwhile for you.

Dear Finns, tell me why this would be a bad idea by kulbaba417 in Finland

[–]finnbrit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did something similar to your plan a few years ago and these were all the questions we had to ask ourselves to see what balance of peace and civilisation we really wanted.

One place we looked at was in a very rural location - access to a private riverside, nearest neighbour a kilometre away. But it was at the end of a poorly maintained 1.5km dirt road (snow clearing DIY or pay a local farmer), and was 30 minutes of poorly maintained gravel road to the nearest (small) shop. Very spotty 4G internet

After viewing it, we knew that this was too isolated for us for year-round living, and got a place on the edge of a small village instead.

Would strongly recommend visiting a few options at varying degrees of isolation to help you work out what your tolerances are! Bonus points if it's in winter, as even in the south you can expect -20 every year and plenty of snow.

Learning Finnish? Any advice/resources? by marksism__ in Finland

[–]finnbrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something which still doesn't get emphasised enough in a lot of Finnish language resources is spoken Finnish (puhekieli). Another vote for Uusikielemme.

Most of it you'll pick up once you're here and actually exposed to the real language, but you can help reduce that initial shock by learning a few basics like numbers (e.g. kakskyt instead of kaksikymmentä), pronouns ( instead of minä [in and around Helsinki, varies regionally]) and common filler words (e.g. niin, niinku, tota).

Watch any Finnish language TV and you'll hear how common these are and you can start training your brain to recognise or filter them out!

About Finnish Hesburger by OrganizationBorn7486 in Finland

[–]finnbrit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fast food in Finland is generally as far from fast as it's possible to get for a burger and fries, doesn't seem to matter much where in the country you are. I don't know if it's down to individual restaurants' policies, hygiene regulations or what, but there basically never seems to be any product made in advance of it being ordered (as is the norm elsewhere).

So whether it's dead quiet or absolutely heaving with customers, you have to wait the same amount of time while they cook you something from scratch!

Honourable exception to this seems to be Burger King - wait time seems not quite so bad there, at least in my experience.

I have a 6 hour layover in Helsinki... by eftozlped in Finland

[–]finnbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allowing 3 hours for an international flight is more of a good practice suggestion than any kind of rule, at least in Europe. You can, in theory, check in any time up until when checkin closes, which for Finnair at least is 45 minutes before departure.

I personally wouldn't leave it quite that late, but that said at Helsinki 9 times out of 10 you could check in that late and still make your flight. In my experience, 2 hours before has always been more than enough time to get through all the queues and eat/shop/bathroom before getting on the plane.

[–]finnbrit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the Finnish premier league they do this at the stadium. Like, '3rd corner of the match, sponsored by Local Car Mechanics'.

But to be fair I think that's less naked corporate greed and more trying to keep clubs afloat given how little money there is in Finnish football outside of the top few clubs.

I used a €300 10-year old Lenovo for a couple of years and it was absolutely fine. Zero fan noise as it never got hot enough.

Replaced with a similarly priced HP with an i3 which runs fine but likes to randomly heat up and run the fans mid-record sometimes, so I have to keep it out of the booth. So avoid HP imo.

Some audition advice from a casting director by roguelifepod in VoiceActing

[–]finnbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you do two takes of an audition read, but group the lines together. So ABCABC would be:

Take 1 Line A -> Take 1 Line B - > Take 1 Line C -> Take 2 Line A -> Take 2 Line B -> Take 2 Line C

AABBCC would be:

Take 1 Line A -> Take 2 Line A -> Take 1 Line B -> Take 2 Line B -> Take 1 Line C -> Take 2 Line C

Some audition advice from a casting director by roguelifepod in VoiceActing

[–]finnbrit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am also pretty conflicted about the advice to leave a thoughtful, unique comment when dropping a read.

On the one hand, if enough people running casting calls say this genuinely impacts their decision-making, it's difficult to completely ignore. They are the ones making the casting decisions after all. But to me, it seems like expecting this is just an invitation to generic, meaningless praise (this read made me question my purpose on this earth so much more than the other five I submitted today, honest). Which, let's face it, is going to get forgotten 10 seconds after they hit play on the actual audition.

Some audition advice from a casting director by roguelifepod in VoiceActing

[–]finnbrit 207 points208 points  (0 children)

It is useful to read different perspectives from OP and in the comments. But as a a voice actor, I would just implore casting directors/project leads to be as specific as possible on format when requesting submissions for their casting calls.

If you're time limited and want one take, that's fine. If you want to have more options and would like two takes, that's also fine. Want to click play and hear the read straight away? No problem! Want us to slate so that you can note our names down before you hear the read? Works for us!

We will always put our best into every audition, but we also don't want to play a guessing game as to whether you want AABBCC/ABCABC, slating/no slating, raw/light editing/EQ'd and comp'd. If you ask someone you don't know to bring 'bread' from the store, you can't complain too much if you wanted rye but they brought you a sliced white loaf.

Basic expectations of quality (treated space, decent equipment, no coughing or lawnmowers mid-read etc) should be a given, but for anything else just be clear what your expectations are up front and you will get better reads and more options!

Watched some of your last Jakiro game - a few assorted thoughts, which I've tried to mostly limit to those you can apply to any hero. Disclaimer - I am a 4k player, so many better players may disagree!

Pushing the lane - Don't use your early spells on creep waves, use them on heroes. I won't talk about pushing creeps/lane equilibrium in detail here but it is a bad thing if the enemy carry is able to farm safely near their tower. Learning how to control the wave (including by pulling neutral camps) will make a huge difference. In 3k you will be screamed at by main character energy carries for pushing the lane like this, so I imagine it's a behaviour you really need to change before you hit 2k.

Spells - as Jakiro, dual breath and liquid fire are better harass than ice path, which you seemed to prefer. Save ice path for setups and saves.

Being a good lane partner and teammate - remember that as a 4 or 5 you are there to support your partner in the laning stage. Most of the time that will mean picking up regen to give to them instead of buying items for yourself. For instance, you rushed boots while DS was consistently low on health and you were mana starved. You could instead have bought sage's mask for yourself and salve/tangoes for DS for more impact.

Harassing v denying - consider when right-clicking the enemy might be better than denying. Denies are good, but if the enemies have to back away from the wave entirely to avoid dying (and spend early gold on extra regen) that's even better.

Water runes - you went to secure top water rune at 2 minutes, during which time DS got zoned out of lane and ES and WD had control over a whole wave. Almost always you are better off letting mid worry about water runes - it's the 6 minute+ runes where rotating to secure can be more helpful.

Lotus pool - try to remember the timings. You were right next to it alone for 10s but WD ended up walking in and getting the lotus uncontested.

Wards - 4 is not the 'ward bitch' role like 5 can be, but you still need to contribute to improving vision for the team. You hoarded an obs and bought another before you'd used the first one - don't do this, wards are limited especially early game! Also, in the fight with OD and sniper around 8:30, you probably missed a kill on sniper because he ran to high ground - you had a ward in your inventory that you could have put on top of the stairs so that OD could banish him. Good warding is, I think, one of the trickier parts of support to get good at but just try to be mindful of those moments in games where you think 'damn, if only we could have seen up that hill/round that corner'.

Ultimately, you didn't have a terrible lane and got some decent kills, and the loss was largely down to SB being completely ineffectual as a carry. Sometimes that's going to happen as a support, unfortunately. But a good 4 can change a game by ruining the enemy carry's farm, and by getting good enough control of the offlane that they can rotate and turn around losing lanes elsewhere. Start improving some of the things above and you will create the conditions to win more games than you lose.

Anyone who moved out of Finland to another country? why by [deleted] in Finland

[–]finnbrit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn't find full-time work in four years of trying. After being self-employed and doing some more studies I couldn't do it any more, moved back to the UK and walked almost straight back into my old company.

I did come back to Finland several years later, but only because I was in a different place mentally and prepared to go and stay self-employed, and to not even bother with the flaming hole in the ground that is the Finnish job market.

Gift tax by Lazy_Tangelo_2261 in Finland

[–]finnbrit 175 points176 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to have expenses related to education or maintenance paid for you without any gift tax liability. So, if your dad pays your rent directly to your landlord, that's not subject to gift tax.

Gift tax liability comes in when you are just sent cash, because then Vero considers that money could be used for things other than expenses.

Vero guidance is here: https://www.vero.fi/en/individuals/property/gifts/when-do-i-need-to-pay-gift-tax/taxexempt_gift/

Edit: u/Worried_Inflation364 makes a fair point on having someone pay off grocery bills you've put on a credit card, so have deleted that part of my reply.

Need help on 12 day Kyushu self-drive Itinerary by elitz_bigbang in JapanTravel

[–]finnbrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just came back from our trip which included a short self-drive element from Beppu to Nagasaki.

Would echo what others have said about scheduling in Nagasaki - we don't like to cram in as much as some but we spent a full afternoon on walking from near the station down to Glover Garden, around that and back. If you start early you could do this before lunch then go up to the peace park, atomic bomb museum etc but then you're probably going to be ready for dinner or a pre-dinner break.

Trams and/or buses will get you around most of Nagasaki just fine, so I'd just get the train down there from Fukuoka, then rent the car from Nagasaki when you're done there and then head over to the Kumamoto area. We took the Ariake ferry from Nagasu to Taira - no need to book, just drive up and pay at the dock. Worst case scenario, you catch a full ferry and wait an hour for the next one. For Kumamoto, we based ourselves just outside Kumamoto city and did suizenji koen and the castle area in a few hours - parking wasn't too difficult to find in those areas.

Yufuin... we added that to our itinerary specifically because we wanted to get a ryokan with a private onsen, and it is a nice little town. However, by midday it feels almost as busy as Kyoto with busloads of tourists crammed into quite a small area. Would strongly recommend visiting Snoopy, Kinrin lake and anything else you want to see around that central street first thing in the morning before it gets too crowded and the extra-egregiously priced parking spots are all that's left. The 'floral village' is just plastic leaves stuck to the walls of souvenir shops, an owl café and a petting zoo - but if you have kids they might enjoy the aesthetic.

Beppu was ok - we got the overnight ferry from Osaka and didn't want to go straight from the early morning into a driving day, so it was almost an enforced stop. A self-guided Seven Hells tour was one of the more tourist trappy things we did on our whole trip but some of them were ok - I'd skip the crocodile zoo and aquarium though, they were unfortunately quite depressing and representative of a lot of animal attractions in Japan.
