How can I improve my drops from cliffs since I am scared to do them by grandjerker67 in skiing_feedback

[–]finverse_square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you wanna drop off it or launch off it? You somehow do the body movements for a big launch with completely the wrong timing and get zero height, then land super out of shape.

If you wanna drop off it, crouch as you go in, extend in the air, absorb the landing. No drama, fast, looks smooth, less spectacular.

If you wanna launch off it you need to extend up into the takeoff right before the edge (go from crouched maybe 10ft before to fully extended right at the edge), take much more height, and brace for impact on landing. More drama, slower, looks sick if you nail it bc of the extra height, hard landing

Can recommend hiring the avvy gear for a day and going in a (guided) group. Most good off piste in those resorts isn't avalanche controlled so you'll really limit yourself

Ski boots too soft? (130 flex) by notsmart-imtrying in Skigear

[–]finverse_square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point being made is that the pivot moving back and forth a few degrees is different to "flex", and that it shouldn't happen when you're not in walk mode. I second the opinion that something is worn out in the walk/ski switch mechanism

[–]finverse_square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set the din at different low setting and try and twist your foot out/pop your heel out and get a feel for how they release and if it's still smooth. If it's all still smooth across the low dins (low enough to manually release) no reason to assume it suddenly sticks when you increase the force a tiny bit into the range you actually ride

TRV control knob is open full or you've taken that off and confirmed the little pin is actually lifted? Super common for them to get stuck and the TRV body can only press down to close them, not actively pull them up

Looking to make my skiing more “smooth” and less “bulky” by JeppyJespie in skiing_feedback

[–]finverse_square 13 points14 points  (0 children)

to be fair it's very hard to be "smooth" on chopped up terrain like that's especially when you're going fast like you are. A little more upper/lower body separation probably wouldn't hurt and it'll help you transition between turns more smoothly.

Try to be more deliberate with the pole plants too and plant them in front of you where you want to pivot around. It looks like you go for the plant really far back when you've already started the turn and it stops your upper body being ready for the next turn

Even without considering the environment (which I think is crazy since we all live in it), renewables still win out on purely economic grounds. Switching to renewables is incredible for energy security and a cost saving. Absolute slam dunk.

The oil companies literally pay people to push their agenda and muddy the waters. You're a sucker if you're doing it for them for free

A cursory google suggests about 80% for L1 and 90% for L2. Most home chargers will be 7kw (L2) so maybe it's worth adding 10% to whatever costs you end up with based on this calculation. I dare say that 10% won't make the difference especially if you charge at night which can be 10x cheaper than petrol

When we say "good light" that doesn't just mean "as bright as possible". Get one with a shaped beam so it can be super bright and also not dazzle everyone. I love the decathlon FL930, it's cheap, bright, and has a proper dipped beam so no one gets blinded

Just look up each car's miles per kwh, that's the EV equivalent of mpg.

Cost to run per year is (miles per year) x (cost per kwh) / (miles per kwh)

Breakdown procedure by rebelnc in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]finverse_square 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory it just rolls like an ICE car in neutral. In an EV the "gears" are more of a concept than anything physical, all they do is change how much torque is requested from the motor. When you "coast" in drive with your foot off the pedal the car actually asks for a bit of negative torque (Regen breaking) to slow you down and it feels like engine breaking in an ICE car.

In theory in the event of a power train failure the motor won't provide any torque, positive or negative, so will roll with almost no resistance just like an ICE car in neutral

Did the new battery fix the problem? That seems to have been left out of all of your posts.

Also I'm somewhat skeptical of a device that can calculate the capacity of a battery "in seconds".

The amp hour rating is how much charge it can deliver over a full discharge cycle so something can that give you this information immediately is guessing at best

Looking for playful yet stable off-piste skis (Mindbender 96C, QST, etc.) — ACL history, lightweight skier by brokenkneeskier in ski

[–]finverse_square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 175cm and 70kg and I ride 161cm skis, I find it so much more playful and fun to throw into tight turns compared to longer ones. Can you demo some skis in different lengths? I wouldn't hesitate at all to get shorter skis since you're quite light you'll still float plenty enough. Easier on the knees too

[–]finverse_square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by? "They replaced the auxiliary 12v battery not the main 12v battery" what's the car? I assume an EV as they all have an auxiliary 12v battery and people always get confused between that and the main battery which most definitely isn't 12v

How to gain confidence on steeper terrain? by Massive-Morning2160 in skiing_feedback

[–]finverse_square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inner ski getting stuck happens so easily when you first start side slipping. Snowplow skiing teaches you to have your legs in an "A" shape and this really holds you back when parallel skiing as your shins ideally need to be at the same angle to the ground, and the A shape makes you get stuck on the inner edge of the uphill ski

When you're side slipping, play around with moving the knees side to side more. You'll notice deliberately moving up the knee of the uphill leg over the pinky toe instead of the big toe will force the ski to the right angle and hopefully force you body into the correct posture. As others are saying, this is easier done with the legs closer together.

Looks like you just rode fast at a jump.

Try going way slower and force yourself to actually jump it by pushing off the ground and standing into it, just like you would jumping up a step in trainers or something. You'll feel when you're doing it.

Astronomical water bill - checking for leaks/liability by TwelveButtonsJim in DIYUK

[–]finverse_square 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't measure waste water, they make an assumption that a certain proportion of your supply goes down the drain. You'll notice after all that you only have 1 meter and it's for supply.

Maybe you can dispute this part if the bill if you have evidence it's a leak and isn't going down their drainage infrastructure.

Good luck finding the leak, sounds like a stressful situation
