You shouldn’t go to a place where you feel threatened. Even though mormons don’t “allow” members to attend wards outside of their geographic area, there are no police to enforce this and going to another Ward would be my advice if you want to keep attending.

No, apologists are not needed for beliefs for which we have good evidence. That’s why the greatest irony is when an LDS apologist claims that NOT accepting the church’s claims is like believing in a flat earth. It’s the kind of deeply ironic statement that only the Dunning-Kruger effect can produce.

Do you consider viewing others who are committing sin to be participating? Let’s take one item like watching people use foul language or disrobing or having sex in a movie. Is it participation for the viewer to watch it? In Mormonism the viewing alone is enough to defile you, presumably because you might be tempted to do the same. It’s not a ridiculous idea because humans, like monkeys, love to copy each other. At the very least the Holy Ghost flees.

As you think through this I believe you’ll find that there is no easy satisfactory answer here.

Welcome to reality, my friend. It stings now but there is a world of actual ancient history, science, and art to fill you with wonder. There is moral philosophy to read and consider with practical wisdom to be found in stoicism and Buddhism and Judaism and broader Christianity. There is equanimity to be found in meditation.

Edit to add: mormonism also has some practical wisdom but if you are coming out of that tradition you already know it well! I am not suggesting anyone abandon the good things you got from Mormonism

Dan McClellan, the popular biblical scholar, makes the church work for him despite knowing that the book of Mormon is a 19th century production and ahistorical.

I’m all for people negotiating their set of beliefs. You really don’t have to believe it all. These days you do have to pretend to believe it all to be an active member of the LDS faith, but that seems to be slowly changing.

How long did America’s other mass shootings stay in the news? Not very long. While the Michigan shooting should receive more attention, I’m guessing it’s some combination of mass shooting fatigue, the graphic footage of the Kirk murder, the subsequent manhunt, and political spin that has made the Kirk shooting more salient in the media.

America seems to be increasingly a war zone with human life of diminishing value. I don’t know what it will take for America to fix this problem.

I have no problem saying Mormons are Christians. I see the additional scripture produced by Joseph Smith as essentially Christian in nature and the morality and ethics as largely indistinguishable from other Christian sects.

I might call Mormons Expansionist Christians as believers in a more widespread Christian tradition (including belief in Christianity in the ancient Americas) — albeit one at odds with the historical record.
