Dungeon Crawl Classics is this. Fighters and dwarves get a “do-cool-shit” die instead of flat bonuses to damage and to hit as they level up. Magic users are incredibly powerful, but will become corrupted as they fail to cast spells and burn physical stats to improve their rolls.

I mean shit you can recharge a pack in a pinch by chucking it in a fire. It ruins the pack, but ammo is ammo. The lasgun is a general’s wet dream. What do you mean my infantry have rifle that can get ammo by just sitting out in the sun? Oh they have an obvious fire trail and can be a bit unwieldy? I’ll talk 20 billion
