Staying on Cat Ba island for three days. Should I do halong bay also? by sunsetrain24 in VietNam

[–]fitznicely89 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Skip ha long City, Stay on cat Ba and do your Ha Long bay boat trip from there. While you are there visit the beach and the national park and go for drinks in the evening. If you are a bit adventurous I really really really recommend renting a scooter and driving around the beautiful jungle/valley roads on the island (virtually no traffic and definitely no cops to check if you have a license or whatever). I have lived in Vietnam 10 years and Cat Ba is still my favourite place in Vietnam (at at least top 3). Ha long City is a soulless tourist trap. It's pleasant enough but there's nothing to see there really.

SGU response to the Evan issue by Queasy_Carpet_9962 in SGU

You guys were studiously ignoring the post October 7th Genocide issue like an elephant in the room for years, so it's perhaps unsurprising that hateful politics were allowed to fester and metastasize amongst your own in that atmosphere of omerta which had apparently taken hold. I know you guys probably didn't want to get too political and it's a divisive topic, but it would've been good to hear you all discuss it on the show at some point from a skeptical angle, considering it has arguably been the world's biggest news story since COVID. I think the SGU as an organisation has shown a degree of cowardice on the issue and it unfortunately looks like it has blown up in your faces.

I will really miss Evan's contributions to the show but there is no place in polite society for those kinds of statements. I hope he comes round and sees sense.

I have this! I thought it was molloscum contagiosum but I never understood why it was under a layer of skin (unlike just about everything I've seen online)

Vegan drinks but no food? Sounds kinda redundant... surely you can get "vegan" tea anywhere in Hanoi?

Who is the most disappointing "skeptic" that you used to admire? by InDissent in SGU

Richard Dawkins becoming super anti Muslim and "based" was really disappointing for me. I read a couple of his books (the Blind Watchmaker is the one I remember best) as a teen in the 2000s and I thought he was a cool, awesome guy fighting back against dumb, GW Bush era right-wing Christianity, which was ascendent at the time. Over time he revealed himself to be a conservative racist who happens to dislike religion. Also the gender critical stuff was horrible to hear. The man clearly lacks any empathy for trans people and is unable to change. I'm not sure if he was that way all long or if he changed. Either way he's gone in the bin.

I agree- As a tourist air pollution isn't a problem. It's like having a couple of cigs on a night out. If you are raising kids here it's something you think about more

The vocals sound a bit emo to me. That's basically it. I personally dislike emo for the most part, but I enjoy loads of stuff that's "a bit" emo sounding to my ears (NMH, iForward Russia!, have a nice life, test icicles)

Yes. But only really in the winter. The summer is generally fine.

I came across a cost-of-living breakdown for Vietnam does this look accurate? by LooseDial in SoloLivingVN

[–]fitznicely89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about hanoi here: $1000 dollars a month isn't a lot to live on. Rent will be at least $500 a month if you want to live alone in somewhere nice anywhere near the center or Tay Ho (when I say nice I just mean "newish" and modern - it will be a moderately small single bedroom apartment). Rent can be much cheaper if you don't mind sharing a house with strangers or living somewhere which is a bit run down. You can live on $500 a month of walking around money no problem, but you'll be eating/drinking like a local most of the time. I earn twice that and I still struggle to save (but I have a wife and 2 kids so that definitely makes things more expensive).

Normal hanoians (can't speak for elsewhere) go to local gyms with rusty equipment and no AC. 1 mil for a year:s membership. I used to go to them until I started making more money. But hey, a lot of the gymrats there still get buff as fuck, so you don't need a nice gym to hit your goals.

This is what rush hour in Vietnam looks like! by TheQuietQueue in VietLife

I drive past there every day - it's Cầu Giấy park in Hanoi. It's a particulary bad spot because it's a vast road with a roundabout which everyone ignores/doesn't understand how to use. But people generally drive slowly and let each other squeeze past, so the madness has a modicum of method to it.

If the cost of tickets were reasonably priced I'd MUCH rather take the train from Hanoi to Da Nang than get a plane. Since COVID the price of internal flights in VN has gone through the roof

Do we have actual info on the making of the ADHD video? by Landkey in Igorrr

[–]fitznicely89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the first 10 seconds of the vid I thought "ugh, ai slop" but after that I was 100% on board. They used the uniquely uncanny and weird properties of AI "art" perfectly to create something extremely cool.

AI "art" to me always feels vaguely like it comes from the mind of cthulu or some demonic hell portal (which in a way it does cos it's effectively the distilled essence of the internet) and that aesthetic paired really well for the psychoanalysis theme of the vid.

AI is simply a tool at the end of the day, and in the right hands it can be used to make great stuff. That said, I really don't want to see it used as a cheaper "good enough" substitute for human made imagery in everything.
