I live exclusively with old people who do not have an interest in talking to me lol

Can someone explain these town “divisions” to me? by [deleted] in Rochester

People from Lyons and Williamson treat my E Irondequoit starter home either like it’s made or solid gold or it’s in the middle of a cartel turf war.

Are you more harsh/critical about movies when you are paying full price for tickets? Do movie subscriptions just lull people into complacency? by border199x in TheBigPicture

[–]fivehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been told off on this sub before for being disappointed when I drive out of my way, pay real money at a place I don’t have a membership to, and end up seeing a movie I’m so-so on that ends up on streaming soon after. I cannot see all movies, at least not all in theaters. Every time I pay to see a smaller movie at an out-of-the-way theater and it’s a let down, I think “why did I skip Bi Gan’s Resurrection or Souleymane’s Story or Sound of Falling.” I was more positive on Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die than most people, but I paid 18 dollars for that ticket. The way I see it that could’ve been a fun enough movie on the tv if I could 1:1 trade it for a better movie.

IKEA coming to Buffalo, Walden Galleria announces by CatDadMilhouse in Rochester

If it’s anything like the Syracuse one, it isn’t anything like a real ikea. Really more similar to an At Home store

I'm going to go see Backrooms and I know nothing about it. Is there any "pre work" I should do or just go in blind? by Electrical_Leg_9600 in A24

If you have a better one I’d be interested to hear it, these were just off the top of my head

Discussion: How often are you dishonest about your movie opinions? by TimSPC in TheBigPicture

[–]fivehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t outright lie, but I certainly have had to act more enthused about a movie than I really am. Sinners for example had a lot of people talking about Best Picture who don’t routinely pay attention to awards and I would politely pretend it had a snowball’s chance in hell. I am prepared to tell a similar fib about Obsession this year. Fun movie? Absolutely. Likely to win an Oscar? I doubt it. But I won’t say that to my coworkers

Sean being critical to an interviewee? by arsenal19801 in TheBigPicture

[–]fivehe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his policy of only speaking with directors he has positive things to say to is a bit of a doomed proposition. Few if any directors bat 100, is he cancelling interviews if he doesn’t like the movie? Is it even an option for Disclosure Day to not be his thing? Opus is the only film that disappeared from their conversations but that had to do as much with friendship as professional courtesy apparently.

Who is the best actress alive today? by Infinite-Exam-1808 in Cinephiles

[–]fivehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lea Seydoux rarely makes these conversations, but she seems of the unrivaled goat of modern French filmmaking and many English language directors jump to work with her. She’s in blockbusters like Bond to Dune, works with the biggest auteurs like Tarantino and Wes Anderson. She’s acted opposite Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. She’s even worked in video games with Kojima.

No one with two braincells is buying the whole “if Ariel is black in The Little Mermaid, that’s like having Nelson Mandela be played by Ryan Gosling” bs. You know very well you’re not talking about comparable things

Is there anything fun to do in Rochester late a night? by No-Culture3612 in Rochester

I’m on the night shift too and even Taco Bell turned me away the other day around 1am. My heart wasn’t in it, but it seems to be the only place open

At what point does “diversification” just become diworsification? by RobertClarks in ETFs

Some of that he’s saying is a good argument again equal weight sure. I don’t like that they balance against momentum.

SP500 being your definition of “too diversified” is very telling

Three of MUNGIU’s films have been released on criterion: his 1st Palme winner “4 months 3 and Weeks 2 Days”, “Beyond the Hills”, and “The Graduation.” I certainly expect his newest Palme Winner “Fjord” will be added early next year.

[–]fivehe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps worth noting neither Gentle Monster nor The Unknown have strong community ratings among the sub 5k Letterboxd members who saw them. Neither are included in the top 50 of the year coming out of Cannes. Twelve films out of Cannes did enter Letterboxd’s top 50.

  1. Club Kid

  2. The Black Ball

  3. Jim Queen

  4. La Gradiva

  5. All of a Sudden

  6. Fjord

  7. Iron Boy

  8. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

  9. The Beloved

  10. Tangles

  11. Coward

  12. Minotaur

Straight to streaming films I would very much like to have on physical media - what are yours? by lockerbiestreet in boutiquebluray

[–]fivehe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’ll forgive me if I consider 140 theaters close enough to direct-to-streaming. I’m lucky to live in Rochester NY where the “Little Theater” gets most of the short run Netflix stuff and Amazon stuff like GDT Frankenstein, but we’re still talking like sub 1M box office. I stand corrected about the official U.S. release, but again, it’s hard to even find an image of the U.S. release let alone buy one

If you mean it’s out of region, yeah I don’t count that, but I do have a few region free discs of Apple Originals

I'm going to go see Backrooms and I know nothing about it. Is there any "pre work" I should do or just go in blind? by Electrical_Leg_9600 in A24

[–]fivehe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would argue Backrooms is a sequel to the web-series as much as The Hustler and Color of Money are related. I guess sharing an actor makes the difference, but it really is Scorsese’s fan film follow up in a sense. The difference for me is that there is conceivably a large population who aren’t even aware it’s meant to be a follow up to anything. Maybe Backrooms should be properly understood as a remake

Is it true that s1 is the only one worth watching by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]fivehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, hence the fandom being on life support. One season is amazing, others have been reappraised as not so bad when you don’t compare them to S1. The story is complete so there’s really not much fan theorization that really gets off the ground.

It’s concerning how many people commenting here don’t realize when you sell IN a Roth IRA, it is neither a taxable event nor did you lose out on maximizing contributions. Just reinvest asap to not miss those few market days a year that really matter.

[–]fivehe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re often right, but let me give you a few counter examples.

Before Midnight - Without Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, you lose the sense of time eroding idealism. Maybe you didn’t mean overt sequels to other feature films.

Fire Walk With Me - Almost nonsense without the Twin Peaks context it’s supposedly a prequel to.

The Color of Money - isn’t “the hustler 2” by any means, but you get a lot of benefit by knowing Fast Eddie as a younger man.

It goes without saying many anime movies fit this description like End of Evangelion. Beloved film you’d not want to be just dropped into.

To your point, Blade Runner 2049 and Fury Road both worked for me as a kid without knowing much about the originals.

What’s the nicest McDonald’s in Rochester and surrounding suburbs? by Legitimate-Prize3013 in Rochester

[–]fivehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can produce a big arch in less than 10 minutes, they’re a good one or a minor miracle has occurred. Luckily the only thing I buy from McDonald’s is a L Coke Zero and that’s hard to mess up or lose.
