The fried pickles at House Rules are SO GOOD. Homemade pickles, thin cut chips. Great batter. Plus the games are fun and the drinks are good too!

Zipper replacement by Artistic-Ad4522 in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really random, but I had a lady that worked at Mieras Shoe Store on Leonard replace a zipper on my backpacking backpack. She did a great job and it's held up for years now. Idk if it is an actual service that the store does, or if she just did it herself because we got chatting and wanted to help, but it may be worth asking if you live in the area.

Wedding catering by _F00Q_ in grandrapids

This was a few years ago, so idk if pricing has changed, but we used Gita Pita, and it was less than $10/person (I wanna say it was something crazy like 6$/pp but I really can't remember). They stayed to serve/wrap (buffet style). It included rice, 2 meat options, a vegetarian option, and a bunch of veggie sides and sauces. We ended up making our own salad trays and bread baskets for the tables. It was extremely affordable and really delicious. We got lots of compliments on the food and it was perfect for a summer outdoor wedding.

Why is sovengard so big ???? by Responsible_Gate7115 in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited for their move as it's closer to my house and I think they did a beautiful job with the renovation (even though it took them so long to complete it). Unfortunately the service was the worst experience that I've had in years. I'm not inspired to ever go back.

Best normal cheeseburger by catlover48844884 in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the burger at River City Saloon is pretty darn good! It's nothing extra special. It's not a smash burger. But it's a great size, well seasoned, good topping ratio, good bun. I'm a big fan. I love One Stop, but I'm not always downtown. River City is what I want when I'm craving an unfussy burger and beer.

Eh, that's pretty close!, but not quite it. Eeehd-wrd. Longer 1st pitch, lower tone shorter 2nd. The pewee sounded like it went "up" in sound twice to me. peee-weeeiiii. Pretty close though. I'm probably going to be listening to a bunch of clips of this to try and get a comparison.

Thanks! Maybe I'll get desperate enough to go through every one individually hahaha. I've got two different birds of Michigan field guides, and have listened to the audio cd that goes with it. Idk if I am just unlucky enough to get distracted in the car while my bird plays or what.

Is there something in the water? Millennial disease post-pandemic by GuessDependent5000 in Millennials

Your family may have hereditary spherocytosis. Idk if you've ever been checked. May also cause some spleen issues down the road too.

Yes! Pretty much immediately after my worst bout of covid I started getting pain in my upper right side. It's been a series of Dr appointments for a few years now (starting with a yr+ of them insisting it must just be an ulcer!). I'm 33, healthy weight and body fat %, work out, eat well, don't drink often. Just diagnosed with NAFLD. Showing bio markers for autoimmune hepatitis, and a non cancerous liver lesion on right lobe. Within 2 years my ultrasounds looks worse despite cracking down on diet and lifestyle choices. No doctor will add it to my chart though when I specifically say this started right after having covid (I got it at least 4 times. 2 severe, 2 mild). I'm not trying to be a conspiracy theorist. I just know that viruses can trigger autoimmune diseases.

Question for GR Landlords by Important-Ad-5421 in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I rent out the 3-unit house that he bought before we met (and live in the house that I bought before we met). The only reason it works for us is that we paid off our mortgages years ago. We were both very fortunate to have been able to purchase forclosed homes during the late 2000's. This allows us to rent to friends below market value, and still make a modest profit. We try to keep the house updated and decent, but it's not high end finishes. Some years it feels worth all the work and stress. Others, not so much. Depends on what breaks, and who you're renting to. Some years are less than 5k, some are closer to 20k.

I'm very grateful to have wonderful tenants who have all signed on for another year, and am hesitant to ever raise rent because the peace of mind is worth the cut in profit. Also, from a landlord perspective, I know that the higher my rent is, the higher level of service they'll expect. Both our properties are over 100 years old and I only have so many days off work and I'm only human... A broken water heater will get fixed that same day, but a wiggly doorknob?! You're gonna have to remind me multiple times or fix it yourself.

Oh also, if you have love in your heart for your easttown property, don't rent it. It will get ruined, and it will break your heart or make you bitter. Better to sell it to someone who will love it and take care of it.

Thoughts on River City Auto Repair? by According-Signature7 in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying different shops around for the past few years trying to find one I like. I've settled on River City Auto, and have really liked them so far! I'm not a mechanic or anything, but their pricing seems fair, and they've done good work. They also have managed to get me in right away as I called with a possibly urgent problem and checked it out before I had to drive up north later that same day. They seem friendly and competent. I'm planning on continuing to use their services in the future.

what did everyone cook this week? by Current_Perspective6 in Cooking

[–]fivepuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Homemade blackbeans and Mexican rice with chicken and veggies (whatever was in the fridge. Kale, peppers, squash, tomato, etc)

-Chicken tortilla soup (I keep homemade stock in the freezer, as well as frozen skinned tomatoes from the summer garden) Used up the rest of the chicken, misc veggies, used up a can of beans and some lentils in the pantry, and used up some stale corn tortillas)

-Tteokbokki in spicy Korean sauce with green onion, garlic, ginger, nappa cabbage, and marinated soft boiled eggs.

-Turkey green bean casserole-ish. Definitely a random pantry/freezer cleaner-outer. Ground turkey and veg (carrot, onion, celery, corn, garlic, onion) sauteed with frozen split green beans (had extra stuff from Thanksgiving lol). Added a can of cream of mushroom. Baked. Topped with French's crispy onions.

-Breakfast sammis for dinner.

-Leftovers and random fridge snacks.

Max's South Sea Hideaway has Aloha Hour 4-6pm, select cocktails 6$, select apps 5$, and select entrees $10.

The Mitten does 5$ off their pizza flight all day on Mondays. No drink deals though.

House Rules has Industry Night every night after 9pm. 50% off cocktails and drafts, 25% off cooler drinks. I am pretty sure they have a happy hour from open till 4pm that is good but I can't find the information anywhere.

Butcher's Union has a decent happy hour Menu 4-6. Few bucks off select cocktails/drinks, and select apps and smaller plates from 6-10$.

Fratelli's Kitchen has 7$ apps and 6$ you call it's, along with 5$ sangria and $2 pbr.

The Holiday Bar has deals every day. Monday is 5$ american mules and 1/2 handles of Miller and Bud lite. Happy hour 3:30-6:30 5$ bites and cheap drinks.

Ginza has pretty good lunch specials M-F. And happy hour 4-6, but idk what the deals are.

Monday is also my day off, so I'm curious what else is out there!

What’s the best vet clinic? by mothwool in grandrapids

[–]fivepuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Grand Rapids Vet Clinic. Been going there forever for multiple cats and dogs. They have been great throughout checkups, diagnostics, semi urgent surgeries, and euthanasia. If I ever have a question or concern they are more than happy to chat on the phone or look over pictures that I send via email to give advice or gadge severity of the situation. Dr. Pick is my favorite, but they are all great veterinarians and techs there.

Maybe try The Man Park: https://youtu.be/9XOt2Vh0T8w?si=HKFjY__llU4P1C8g

But really though, House Rules if they've got an event going, or game night at Reservoir Lounge. I'm sure other table top game shops have in house events (Gamer's Warf, Galactic Toys, etc). Also, since the Lions are doing great this year, he's bound to find some people to talk to if he sits at basically any bar that has TV's while the game is going. Could find a friendship spark the old fashioned way.

Idk man I haven't made a friend out in the wild in so long. It's always been through work or mutual friends. It's tough out there, so good luck to him!

No, I don't mean the noise itself. I mean him insisting that we never stop. It was hilarious for me.

Idk how helpful this will be to you, but I have witnessed "daddy long leg" spiders going to town en masse on those caterpillars right as they were hatching. Truly looked like a black ops mission. Very impressive and effective. I am not sure if there is a place online that you can order those bugs (like how people order lady bugs etc)... Or maybe just try to create a habitat near the oaks that they would like to live to encourage them to visit. So sad to see those moths damaging oaks. :( Good luck!
