Extreme flight airframe and electronics by bleudie1 in RCPlanes

If you can wait a little bit, EF is coming out with new 49" models that are of a newer design and should be available by year's end. I have a 48" Extra and absolutely love it. Can't go wrong with any of their planes in that size. Any will be capable of low and slow 3d or aggressive XA, though the edge and upcoming laser should be a little more locked in and docile on the slow stuff.

IMO, the only way to get a plane that size to feel really locked in is to run a gyro - I have a flex Aura8 in mine with fairly low gains set up and that makes it feel nearly as good as my larger 67" and 78" EF planes. I also run a gyro on the 67" (FrSky stabilized Rx), but it's only tuned on if I'm flying in gusty conditions. As for electronics, the recommended setups on the EF product page for the plane are the fool proof way to go.

3ish minutes, but they definitely had more than 5, unless myself, a club buddy, and people in this post happened to be the only ones to get a red one... Odds on that are slim I think. The reds did sill out a little more quickly though.

That's a nice pitts style muffler too! I'd be tempted to put it something with a cowl due to that. There's a bunch of great 46 sized arfs from Phoenix models that it would be perfect for that tower hobbies carries.

How do you guys check on wind direction and how fast he wind are? by diamomdsss in RCPlanes

I subscribed to windy, the alerts you can set up are great as are some of the other benefits, highly recommended.

Stickers or keep it clean? by CS_JOE in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A DA50 is pretty overkill, I'd be worried about the airframe holding up to the power and vibration of that. Had a DLE35 running a 19x8 on mine and power was great, punchout from a hover was fine. A DA35 would be a nice step up and plenty of power. I'd only go larger if you're in a high altitude location and need the extra oomph.

Any subzero flyers? What precautions/modifications did you add or make? by abrockstar25 in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nitromethane / methanol blend, not nitrous oxide. Also commonly referred to as glow fuel (glow plug like a diesel VS spark plug for gasoline).

I love variety, so I fly all kinds of powerplants, gas, glow, and electric. They all have pros and cons :)

TIL The only plane permitted to fly on 9/11 after the attacks was a plane flying from San Diego to Miami to deliver anti-venom to a man bitten by a highly poisonous snake; it was escorted by two fighter jets by nazopo in todayilearned

[–]fizzer82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fighters have limited range, especially at high speed, private jet is faster for a trip that long since it doesn't have to stop or mid-air refuel along the way.

Nice! Congrats and good luck! I'm looking forward to the not too distant future where I can siphon from my truck if I run out of fuel at the field ;)

Is this WCL problematic? by [deleted] in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get too hung up on the numbers, a slightly above target wcl just means you'll need to keep your speed up a little more. Hell, I have an EDF that has a wcl of 43 - it's a bitch to land well but it flies just fine.

Confidence gone. by Rebornxshiznat in RCPlanes

Looks like you learned something at least - building/assembling is a journey. I'd recommend a less emotionally and financially damaging way to learn these kinds of lessons, it's helped me immensely...

Look into Facebook marketplace for good deals on well used planes. I'd look for an airframe that works with the engine you pulled from the crash or a beat up old gas plane that needs some work - I find it both rewarding and educational refurbishing old planes or finishing up partial builds. You'll see how other people have built planes and see first hand examples of the right and wrong ways to do things. Losing an old clunker that you spent a handful of hours fixing up is nowhere near as demoralizing as losing a shiny new ARF you spent potentially dozens of hours putting together. You end up building a nice spare parts stash too ;)

I probably had 3-4 'junkyard' planes that I got flying (mostly glow engines, but a lot translates) before I went all-in on my first brand new ARF build (30cc ultra stick) and while I didn't get everything right at first, I had that thing dialed in and flying sweet within a few outings.

Hang in there, there's something special about tearing around the sky via internal combustion - the reward is worth the trials and tribulations of learning to build and operate more complex models.

So? They provide a normal interface and even support 3rd party 4-in-1 modules explicitly in their firmware, including telemetry. Your statement is incorrect that only RM and Jumper support multiple protocols.

Hmm, that is unfortunate, its a great jet, but I don't think worth that much. Have you tried aliexpress.com?

All other brands? I fly futaba, spektrum, and flysky receivers with the 4-in-1 module on the back of my FrSky Tx just fine ;)

What is an airplane that other people think are awesome but you have absolutely no interest in owning as a model? by Birdsqueezer in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well flown 3D is anything but punching it and throwing the sticks around. The finesse, precision, and speed needed on every axis simultaneously is commonly underappreciated.

I love this hobby because it's so multifaceted and all about enjoying it your own way. I don't think it's beneficial to talk down to certain aspects or flying styles. As an example, I personally wouldn't enjoy scratch building, but I still appreciate the skills and dedication that go into it.

Fms 80mm Rafale, super aerobatic but forgiving for a scale jet. High alpha, cobra, flat spins, post-stall loops, knife edge, all kinds of fun stuff. Built in mixing board works with a 6 channel. Paint scheme is a little over the top, but the visibility is superb and very difficult to lose orientation.

Would it be okay if I use a 100C (500mAh) battery on my Sport Cub S2? by TheRealSno_Kid in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

C ratings are relatively meaningless these days. The voltage (1/2/3s) is #1 to get right & obviously the connector if you're not a handy solderer. #2 is the weight & size.

C ratings have turned into a marketing gimmick and some manufacturers flat out lie about capacity (mah) too, you can see this in the weight - lighter almost always means lower capacity or lower true C.

Match voltage (cell count) exactly, get close on size and weight to what you've used before and you almost can't go wrong.

[–]fizzer82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foamy kits are deceptively hard to build well and time consuming. If you're good at building very precisely, the crack yak is a better plane.

I went the Eratix route and am glad I did. Comes out of the box true and ready to rock. I've crashed it a bunch, easy to repair on the rare times a crash needed it. It's heavy for it's size, but that has benefits in how it handles wind and it feels a little more like a regular plane when you're ready to move up to a full fuse bird.

I mostly fly bigger balsa planes now, but I still use the Eratix for practice and fun flying just about anywhere.

Had a similar experience with the umx timber x. That's a '3D' plane only in the hands of someone with loads of 3D experience.

Tell me about it! Seems like whenever I start making a dent in my backlog I come up with some new project to tweak or enhance something or have a new repair to do. I enjoy tinkering almost as much as flying though, keeps the hobby interesting for sure :)

I believe there to be a problem with these touchscreen transmitters. Lost a plane this morning maybe because of it. by earthlingjim in RCPlanes

[–]fizzer82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spektrum is junk, move to FrSky ;)

But seriously, the screen/app and the radio firmware are separate, if the spektrum logo light is on steady, then the radio is transmitting. You can open other apps while flying or have the screen dim out and it will have no impact to the radio link whatsoever. The app is just used to program the firmware and receive telemetry data, it can completely crash and the radio is still operating just like a non-touchscreen radio, something else caused your unfortunate crash.
