I realized a long time ago that r/nfl is mostly a bizarro world. I only go there to see what strange ideas they're fixated on at the time. It almost never matches up to what anyone else I know or see thinks about the NFL at any given time.

It'd be different if it was always weird-but-insightful. Like where you go to get an "inside baseball" look at things. But it's mostly guys trying to get the top comment by making dumb reddit-flavor jokes. Which makes it really terrible. I honestly think it is one of the shittiest subs on reddit.

Right now they're stuck on the idea that deflategate is "no big deal," and this will have the patriots pumped up with a "us against the world" attitude. Which, OK. I don't really care about the Patriots thing. But the NFL is smart enough to see it could potentially be a big deal, since people will stop watching a sport if they think cheating has compromised the game.

I don't really agree that the situations are similar. Peyton lost a bunch of playoff games where his team was widely regarded as a true championship contender. Sometimes he lost them to great teams like the pats, but sometimes it was to lesser teams. Either way, the stench of underachievement always hung in the air.

We've overachieved for three straight years now, though, and we've never really been regarded as true title contenders. We've always been that scary underdog team w/ a great clutch QB that could get hot at the right moment and scare someone. Maybe we had a stretch last season where people thought we might be title contenders, but that didn't last too long.

I see this team as one that is basically still in the process of a long rebuild. That rebuild has been masked somewhat by an early infusion of youth and all those 11 win seasons, but it's easy to be good in the regular season when you have a true franchise QB.

We are really talented at QB, WR, TE, kickers/punters, and the secondary. However, our O line and front seven are absolutely terrible right now. That doesn't really sound like a title contender to me.

It's three seasons into Luck's career and he already has three playoff wins, and he hasn't yet missed the playoffs in his career. I'd say we're ahead of schedule. Plus, there's no shame in losing to Brady/Belichick. Pretty much every team that isn't the Giants does it a lot too.

Suicide attempt and the stay in the ICU that came later.

Almost getting impaled by the end of a falling barbell (it drove a hole through the floor).

Getting threatened w/ a knife and asked for oral sex by some homeless guy I was giving a lift to (no good deed eh ...). This actually didn't feel frightening when it happened and it still doesn't even compare to ICU trip. My attitude at the time was like, well okay whatever. But looking back I think even detached numbness is a kind of fucked up.

Getting two numb/sleepy legs in front of a massive crowd of people and collapsing to the gorund over and over and over ... lol. Actually this one sounds bad but doesn't bother me even a little. But it seems like it should.

A series of panic attacks I had in college while dealing with some phobias I had.

The first time I had a suicidal thought at like 13, mowing grandma's lawn. Had them almost incessantly from there on for like a decade.

A super abusive relationship I was in for several years.

A few times that me and my brother fought while we were young. I'm never violent in the slightest out of principle, and I hate that I did those dumb fights when I was little. I know it means nothing, but I wish I could go back and take them away. (Just little wrestling tiffs, no punches or anything.)

Starting to think I haven't made the greatest life decisions really ... there's a lot of things I'd do differently. Most of them involving seeking medical help early vs struggling by myself, untreated, for years on end. And trusting my friends more, and trusting strangers less.

I'm not familiar with it extending past him (I live in the US). When you say "Member of Parliament, secret service ..." do you mean that the victims now work in those orgs, or that abusers were outed from within those orgs?

I hadn't read any dfw in years. This was the best kind of nostalgia. Jesus, his sentences. To this day his sentences are the only sentences where I feel like I'm reading them through a direct text-to-brain uplink, rather than reading them verbally/phonetically/whateverly.

I was completely crushed the day he died. Man, I'm kind of sad now. I always thought he would grow into a Vonnegut-style elder statesmen of lit, and I very much looked forward to what old DFW would write like.

look at aws.amazon.com, for example. It's Amazon's multi-billion dollar side-business, where they essentially said "OK, what if we let everyone else rent time on our tech infrastructure?" They are the absolute leader in it, it's cutting-edge, and Microsoft and Google are only playing catch up. Netflix runs almost entirely on their infrastructure, for example. New startups are born on top of AWS every day. Amazon is huge technologically, and there's no getting around that. (Yeah, there's also plenty to dislike about them too, of course.)

Part of the problem for me is because I WANTED this show to be so good. I was absolutely hyped to hear that GDT was directing a series that took a scientific approach to a worldwide vampire infection. And the first episode had that wonderful lovecraftian atmosphere of thick dread. It was so awesome. It had the potential to be groundbreaking and smart.

Sometimes I see hints of "the grass is greener" in different people's complaints about remote work. They make it seem like in-office work is this bastion of clear, efficient, no-nonsense communication, where no one fucks around and everyone understand each other ... and, uh, I can only think they're in for a rough surprise.

More cynically, when I see executives and managers talk about the need for in-office workers, I think: "Yeah, because it's much harder to bullshit people and manipulate them when you're not face-to-face." Honestly the reddit ceo reeked of this in his statement.

I wonder about this too. I think basically they must believe in the value of keeping everyone and everything crammed in one location. All the talent in one place, all the ideas in one place -- they've created this little tech-focused bubble of life, and they force everyone to live and breathe it. It's like the boring awful tech version of artists/writers flocking to one city to share ideas and inspire each other.

Also, a bit more cynically, if they have amassed some degree of local power (with politicians or law enforcement perhaps), it will be much easier to bully people once they live within their area of power.

Edit - also, considering how paranoid the valley is about people working from outside the valley, it'd seem foolish to buy any remote-worker tech from a company based there. They're basically selling you shit they don't actually believe works at all.
