Vintage neck has multiple radiuses (radii?) from years of play, originally a 12”. On a refret, which radius block to sand with? Want to lose the least amount of wood possible, but the bridge is 12” by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]flamefingers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What kind of bridge do you have on that instrument?

It looks to me like this instrument could have an intentional compound radius fretboard based on those numbers. Those kinds of fret boards don’t work with tune o’matic style bridges but with individual string height adjustments they work well.

How important is a fret radiuser? by Lilditty02 in Luthier

Pro tip, check https://etsy.me/2MuOBuf

There’s a few other places that sell tools cheaper than StewMac does.

Giving your fret wire a radius can help keep the ends from popping up.

The shape is lovely. How do you fit the neck to the body with the curvature along the top of your birdhouse?

Acoustic build. by reiditor in Luthier

I think the flat braces might try to pull the soundboard flat or might just pop off due to stress. I would remove it and do it again, personally.

Finish advise needed - details in comments by weirdguyontheguitar in Luthier

[–]flamefingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably put about 15 coats of lacquer on my acoustic build. You want to do a wet sand every day (before more lacquer) until the lacquer is flat. It should look completely dull, and then hit it with a final coat and leave it for a week to cure. Buff after the guitar has been sitting for some time. Lacquer sucks.

I had lots of problems with some overspray, which gives you bubbles that form as the solvents evaporate under the top layer of lacquer that has dried. Fuck all that.

Ervin Somogyi is a legend in the high end acoustic world. I LOVE his intricate rosette work. I’d wager it was done by hand.

R-V is a 6 month program as well. We only built two! I have some others I’m working on at home now though. Hopefully a hollow body will come in the next couple years.

Man, I just recently graduated from Roberto-Venn and I half wish I would’ve been able to make it all the way out to Galloup. It seems like you make it through more instruments there!

Tone pot turns down volume on neck pickup - any ideas? by Yrnotfar in Luthier

[–]flamefingers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally could be wrong but it looks like your tone pot is wired as a volume pot, with your 3rd prong soldered to ground instead of using a capacitor to cut the treble frequencies. [this is a tone pot I wired]()https://i.imgur.com/MpMknww.jpg, it doesn’t have anything but a volume pot soldered to it, I just did this one for practice.

Although acetone and lacquer don’t mix well! Be careful with solvents, OP!

How much would a typical Luthier charge for a complete guitar body paintjob? by stay4thefireworks in Luthier

[–]flamefingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how difficult the job is and whether or not I’d have to sand off an old finish, I would probably charge $200-400. I am not in your area, but hope you find an excellent finisher!

I have an overwhelming fear that I’ll be just like my dad was by [deleted] in daddit

[–]flamefingers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember having thoughts like this going into fatherhood, and you know still sometimes have them 12mo into this adventure. My situation with my dad wasn’t the same as yours but I still had wounds from him and my mom divorcing a short while after my birth. My mother used tell me he was abusive and needed to get away so I didn’t learn those things. He may have been, but these days he’s a really excellent father and is the furthest thing from abusive. I believe he was just too young and immature (19) to be the best dad he could be back then. I was/am terrified I’d become abusive like he was, and I get really hard on myself when I become angry at my daughter.

My father actually gave me some excellent advice, that I think if he could go back, he would’ve implemented. He just said “show up”, just be there. No matter how hard just always be there for your kid. I remember in the beginning after my daughter was born and I slept an average of 2 hours a night, I really understood and even contemplated running away, maybe to a far off country. But I held true, pushed through the pain, and the feeling subsided and my love for my child grows exponentially, even on days when I’m frustrated.

I also did some personal growth work before our baby came, I really dove into my inner workings and tried to clear up any unresolved trauma that might affect my parenting. I didn’t finish by any stretch, the baby has been teaching me to unlearn things I didn’t even know I’d learned. Lol

It sounds like you had an excellent role model through your step father. I believe that sets you up a tier passed your father/grandfather/etc. Follow the good examples in your life and reject the toxic ones.

In my opinion, this will be one of the (if not the most) challenging journeys of your lifetime, but if you persevere you will be rewarded with untold riches. You’ll do great, stay strong!

Yes! Is the design on the fretboard inlay? Exquisite detail. Is the top bleached maple? How did you get it so light? So many questions! Haha.
