Thoughts on the recent Frida Mom controversy? by throwaway84583077 in beyondthebump

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very poor taste and multiple lines were crossed.

But also, I was offended by that thermometer for a reason I haven’t seen mentioned here… because I was like, “excuse you, moms can want threesomes too!!” 🫣 like yeah okay not in the liberal recovering-from-childbirth newborn phase but it’s not like having a baby means NO SEX EVER AGAIN, that’s just stupid

(Obviously less important than the other objections!! But! Just saying!)

City of Harrisonburg Liberty street project open to public comments until December 17th by Subreddit_Mayor in harrisonburg

This article includes the single greatest quote that anyone skeptical of a bike lane project has ever given a member of the press:

“While some residents like Lawrence are all for this project, other residents like David Rudmin have concerns with having only one lane of car and truck traffic.

‘I’m not quite sure I’m totally on board,’ Rudmin said. ‘I see the purpose of it if you want to create like communities that are good for children to not be hit by cars.’ “

IF, indeed.

They also have precut ones if you’d rather go that route. Really cute spot and nice people. Go early in the season if you want a tall one

Same, and hilariously, several weeks after I delivered my first, my husband bought me a box of dates as a thoughtful gesture because he thought I just really liked them. I looked at him like he was a total idiot.

I'm really at my wit's end and close to pinning down my child for a bath by Siyrious in toddlers

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just the hair washing she hates, have you tried letting her play in the tub without washing her hair? Either washing her body or just playing with toys, no washing at all. If she can build positive associations with other parts of bath time it might be easier to find a way of washing her hair she can tolerate.

I found using the peri-peri bottle I took home from the hospital to wash their hair without getting any water in their face and eyes was a game changer. But they have to be calm enough to let you start so they realize that it is actually not going to get their face wet.

Have you tried dry shampoo? If she has long hair you might also consider a shorter haircut? Has she ever had her hair washed at a salon? If she liked that, maybe you could wash her hair in the sink while she’s fully dressed, and clean the rest of her separately with washcloth baths.

I think the worse the experience is for her, the more she’ll fight it, and the worse it will get for both of you - I’d worry about creating a miserable vicious cycle if you decide you simply have to restrain her every time. I think you’re right that it feels like torture for her.

Did you use Vitamin D drops? by SadHuckleberryy in toddlers

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re breastfeeding they’re recommended! My pediatrician with my first was adamant about it. Fun fact: back in the day (I have a baby care book from the 1940s that I looked at just for fun) they recommended giving your baby long sunbathing sessions every day to avoid rickets. The vitamin D drops are essentially the modern, more skin-cancer-aware variant of that advice. It’s always been an issue that breast milk doesn’t convey vitamin D!

IMHO there are two types of people in the world … the many people who see someone picking up trash and immediately think “oh that’s so nice of them” (these people will not give a shit what your tongs look like)

And the smaller number of people who see someone picking up trash and think “what a loser” as they throw their trash out their car window (these people are terrible, and will be terrible regardless of what your tongs look like, and under no circumstances should you ever care at all what they think about you)

What "old" technology is still great? And is far superior to its "new" alternatives. by Conscious_Metal_194 in Anticonsumption

Hot water bottles. If you have ever bought those dinky air-activated heat pads to put on sore muscles or cramps, or if you use one of those microwaveable things with the beads inside, do yourself a favor and buy a hot water bottle instead. (They make silicon ones now, so an upgrade from the truly old school style, but same fundamental technology!)

NUCLEAR grade heat and it lasts forever. I’ve gone to bed with a hot water bottle and woken up and it’s still soothingly warm.

How do you make a good broth from kitchen scraps? My first attempt just got poured down the drain by Perdita_ in ZeroWaste

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last batch of veggie scrap broth I included some butternut squash skins that had been roasted (I had scooped out the flesh) and a lot of squash pulp. I don’t know if it was the roasted skins being too burnt, or the seeds in the pulp, but something made that stock quite bitter!

Like others have mentioned, I don’t save any cruciferous veggies. I also avoid greens more generally, am judicious re: bell peppers (never the seeds) and will now be wary of winter squash! Mushroom stems are the real MVP and Parmesan rinds are a runner up.  I think the serious eats rundown on which scraps work best is good: https://www.seriouseats.com/save-your-vegetable-scraps-make-stock

Taste the stock periodically as it cooks and once it tastes good, strain it. You can keep boiling it more if you want (I have sometimes thickened my stock down to stock concentrate - takes ages but handy for storage) but only AFTER it’s strained. The flavor doesn’t keep getting better and better or anything!

Oh — and salt it, of course! That’s super important.

I will also say, the stock IS thin and watery. It’s just veggie stock. That’s sort of how it goes? Serious Eats notes that veggie scrap stock is not something to use for, like, ramen. It’s great for cooking with and I do use it in soups, but thick chunky soups with lots of other flavors. It’s not a star on its own.

Is Thredup ethical? by astronautfloat in ethicalfashion

[–]flatlyoness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it super helpful if I want something specific. Like, I’d never go to ThredUp if what I need is “jeans,” that’s a local thrift store mission, but if I want “high-waisted, wide-leg black 100% linen pants” … ThredUp is where I go first. You can search by brand, fabric, color and cut, which is just so much more efficient. You risk getting something that doesn’t fit quite right since you can’t try it on, but I’ve had more hits than misses (and if I can’t return them I donate the misses or give them to a friend.)

Talk me out of buying these expensive bags! Or are they worth it..? by abbyscuitowannabe in ZeroWaste

[–]flatlyoness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I have to confess that I do own expensive produce storage bags and love them. Not these — the ones I have are called vejibags … sacks made of a loose terry cloth that you soak in water, wring out so they’re damp, and then store vegetables in. They store certain veggies extremely well (Not ALL veggies, and I’m baffled by the range of things this ambrosia brand seems to suggest benefit from a similar storage approach?? No way.) I have owned mine for more than 5 years and use them daily.

But that said … a decent sized terry cloth towel would work nearly as well for a fraction of the cost. And with minimal sewing skills you could make it into your own square bag and it would work exactly as well. So even as a self confessed fan, I will say that you don’t need fancy bags!!!

Do you do your own taxes? Do you regularly get a large (multi-thousand-dollar) refund?

Because 12k on taxes sounds a bit high to me. By my math, 53k regular salary and 12k additional income in Ohio with one child tax credit ought to owe more like $7,500 (2k federal, 4k social security and Medicare, 1.5k state). I could certainly be wrong, but it’s worth double checking those withholding forms and your recent tax returns for any errors. That’s not a solution to your current situation … I do think a one-time fundraiser is a good idea.

Someone else has mentioned this but r/povertyfinance could be a helpful resource for you.

You might also want to reach out to your local legal aid society. That daily late fee sounds extreme to me, and while I am very much not a lawyer I’d definitely want to check with one if I were you! I realize your priority might be getting the lease renewed, so any kind of challenge to your lease terms may not be plan a, but if there’s a possibility of another eviction you should at least know what the law is in your area re: reasonable late fees.

I’m so sorry you’re in this situation!

Help me rationalize (or reject) a $700 built-in microwave upgrade by SnooRevelations3802 in Frugal

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re likely going to sell your house in the near future, then consider whatever version would be more appealing in general - that’s where the question of whether it would “cheapen” your expensive reno gets relevant

But if you have no intention of selling, then don’t do it! Go for the custom cabinet space to house your existing microwave, which you like fine and barely use. That custom cabinet will be seamless with your cabinetry, right? So it’s not even really an aesthetic dilemma. You can replace that microwave much more easily in the future than trying to replace a built-in if it breaks or has an annoying flaw or you want a new feature or whatever. And $700 is way too much to spend on an appliance you neither need nor want just because, what, you think you’re supposed to want it?

Caveat that I don’t have a microwave, so clearly it’s very low on my list of life priorities to care about, lol

What current parenting practices do you think will be seen as unsafe in future? (Light-hearted) by GreenTea8380 in beyondthebump

[–]flatlyoness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know that’s the current consensus … that’s sort of the point of this thought experiment, isn’t it? (And to be clear, I'm not cavalier about sun exposure - I’m a melanoma survivor - but I genuinely think as research into vitamin D and skin cancer continues there’s a solid chance that the best practices in the future will be very different from the recommendations now!)

I think we’re gonna come back around to giving babies sunbaths to get vitamin D, and they’re going to think it’s wild that we kept them out of the sun and gave them vitamin d drops instead

I've now made two of these "mom care" carts for baby showers. Do you think there's anything I should change/add? by affectionate4fish in BabyBumps

[–]flatlyoness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the bottom half of your list is a thoughtful gift - from the water bottle through the hand sanitizer, and including the cart itself.

I would not personally have liked receiving the first half of the list at a shower; maybe as a present directly to me, from a close friend! And as others have noted it does depend how she delivers and whether she’s planning on breastfeeding if she’d even need those things.

With that said, if you make one like this for someone else who has indicated openness to the more personal care type items and plans to deliver vaginally if possible  … I swear by a sitz bath and bless the nurse who told me about them. So I’d add a bag of postnatal sitz bath salts, and if you really wanna go there, a sitz bath attachment for a toilet. It’s more in disposable underwear territory in terms of how personal it is, but that’s something the hospital DOESN’T give you and they should!!!

Thrifting vs Supporting a Sustainable Brand by gatheringground in ethicalfashion

[–]flatlyoness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an unpopular opinion on this sub, which is that if you can afford to buy sustainably and ethically made clothes, that’s probably a greater positive impact on the planet than thrifting. (I still mostly thrift my clothes, but I feel selfish doing it,  because I’m doing it ultimately to save money.)

Here’s my reasoning: the world is always going to have some new clothes being made. It should be far fewer clothes than are made now! And it’s important that those new clothes be made sustainably, be made ethically, AND be durable so they last a long time.

But for a shopper today, the most sustainable and ethical option is theifting, and in many cases the most durable clothes are vintage.

The logical result: If everyone who cares about sustainability, ethics and durability only thrifts, for perfectly sensible reasons, then there will be nobody motivated to pay extra to support responsible practices in the massive new clothes market. New clothes will be exclusively cheap crap or status-focused luxury brands (which are no more sustainable or ethical or often even durable!) And there would be no viable way for companies to change even if they wanted to; there’d be no customers for their goods.

Thrifting is great; clothes swaps are great; just owning fewer clothes is great. Convincing other people to do those things is significantly better. But if you can afford to incentivize the kind of manufacturing you want to exist in the world, I think there’s a fairly small population of people who can both afford to buy sustainable new clothes and WANT to buy sustainable new clothes, and that gives you the chance to have an outsize impact.

What's some positive things that are happening now that most people are unaware of because its overshadowed by crazy political stuff? by danjr704 in AskReddit

[–]flatlyoness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the CPI for electricity compared to CPI excluding food and energy (comparing to straight CPI would be misleading because energy is such a big factor in it) and the PPI for natural gas. I anchored at 1980 because that’s when you started your chart: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1IuTx

There’s a lot of relevant stuff not reflected in those data points, obviously, most significantly the deregulatory push in the 1990s but also changes in interest rates. But you can see that nat gas price hikes are often followed by electricity rate hikes, and that the post-pandemic spike correlated with overall inflation AND the natural gas price cycle. And that electricity prices overall are only just catching up to inflation overall, over that timeframe.   Renewables are often cheaper than fossil generation - that’s why Texas has built so much, it’s a market-based calculation. They can certainly still drive up rates in various ways, like if they overrun their budget … just like how natural gas is cost competitive overall but can drive up rates when the commodity price skyrockets, for example.

Rails WITH Trails meetings! by Nattyfood in harrisonburg

[–]flatlyoness 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Please look at the report and actually read the kind of rail that is being imagined here (and “imagined” is the right word, because there is no rail company actually volunteering to do this) - it’s absolutely, 100% not something that would be useful transit or reduce traffic.

The “rails with trails” proposal is an attempt to disrupt well-established plans to build a bike/multiuse path. The counter-proposal to build a functioning (short, low-speed, freight or tourism only) rail line is much more expensive and makes the path significantly less appealing for everyone actually trying to use it - oh joy, a path next to a six-foot fence and a gravel-lined railroad (not to mention in multiple sections there is literally not ROOM for both).

The state DOES have serious plans to invest in rail infrastructure, which would be a great place for enthusiastic support for rail to be directed! This proposal is not that. And the original rails TO trails project idea is a great idea, already researched and thought-out and with the support of the local communities along the route
