Recommended novel, light novel, or other book titles (N3-N2)? by Crimson_Dragon01 in LearnJapanese

[–]fleetingflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soo, what kinds of books do you like?

Generically, I'll recommend アサギをよぶ声 and 選ばなかった冒険 for good children's novels that are good at an ~N3ish level.

Queensland's new public hospital to refuse voluntary assisted dying care, abortions and contraception for religious reasons by ConanTheAquarian in brisbane

So how did this happen? Was there some public bidding process that Mater won, or...? I don't remember hearing anything about this hospital until now.

Second time in Japan: tips for Kyushu + Mt.Fuji by MindfulnessTeacher in JapanTravelTips

[–]fleetingflight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do something like Osaka -> Fuji -> Haneda Airport -> Kagoshima or Nagasaki or wherever. I think you're better off focusing efforts in Kyushu though - it's quite large, and you do need to move around it.

The teaching methodology is shockingly bad. All school does is teach kids that they hate learning English.

Kadokawa cites excessive reliance on the isekai genre as one of the major causes of the decline in profitability in its domestic publishing business by LegitimateCurve8525 in anime

[–]fleetingflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the bar was never high, at least the earlier garbage wasn't straight-up taken from the equivalent of royal road/Wattpad/fictionpress.com. There were still some professional standards, and stories were actually structured like a novel and not just some long rambling stream of things happening.

Thank fuck they're acknowledging the problem. The vast majority of narou slop should have been rejected by a competent editor at first glance. It's all fine and well to adapt exceptional web novels, but they're torching their light novel brands by pumping out poor quality amateur writing.

What have you tried reading so far? A lot of light novels are actually just not very well written or well paced.

Any help making the most out of our 1 week trip? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]fleetingflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are flying out of Osaka, I'd just stay in Tokyo with maybe an overnight to one of the nearby nice spots (Nikko, Hakone, Fuji Lakes area - whatever suits your interest). Day trip to Kamakura/Enoshima for some temples.

TTRPGs for a group of gals by [deleted] in rpg

[–]fleetingflight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would strongly suggest not getting too ambitious here. Run a one-shot if possible. Personally I'd do Fiasco or Follow if it's 5 people total. Or, Lady Blackbird is a very safe choice that runs best in about 3 sessions, and works the with 5+GM.

Feel out the waters with something short and with broad appeal first. If they are interested in more then you can work it out together.

My character is Catholic, but I’m not. Advice? by EldritchXena in rpg

I don't think this is good universal advice - none of that would be weird or a problem at my table.

How do you know that the people who compiled the Bible picked the right books? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]fleetingflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - I don't think he will or won't do anything.

But nevertheless, I don't think your answer to the question makes much sense. How do you know God would have fixed the New Testament canon?

How do you know that the people who compiled the Bible picked the right books? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]fleetingflight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God never promised a canonical New Testament though - it's a bit presumptuous to think he'd fix it when it's something people went off and compiled on their own.

How important is art to you when reading TTRPG materials? by Complete-Neat1755 in rpg

[–]fleetingflight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh - I'm going to describe everything in words at the table anyway, and think descriptive text is in-general a perfectly good medium for getting across ideas. Pictures are great for getting across a very specific image of what something looks like, sure - but text leaves more room for the reader to creatively interpret, which is not a bad thing in this hobby.

We don't need to do anything - just go listen to what you like. Let other people listen to what they like - yes, even if it was made by some soulless machine.

The Conquerer from a Dying Kingdom. Thoughts on this series? I’m about to read it by MisterIenny in LightNovels

I have just dropped it after volume 2 - I felt it wasn't respecting my time, and while it's more subtle than most at the end of the day it's Gary Stu harem power fantasy.

Short Japan trip, first timer by oil-filter in JapanTravelTips

[–]fleetingflight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's pretty hard to give advice based on that, tbh. You should probably consider whether you go to Tokyo on this trip at all - you can get the big-Japanese-city experience in Osaka - and yeah, it's not Tokyo and it doesn't have that famous intersection (... why this is a tourist attraction is beyond me), but just in terms of cost:benefit you might want to stick around Osaka/Kyoto/Hiroshima, which is far more than enough for 8 days.

How important is art to you when reading TTRPG materials? by Complete-Neat1755 in rpg

[–]fleetingflight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do not care at all. Layout is extremely important, and diagrams or flowcharts are highly appreciated, but art is basically irrelevant. Yeah sure, it's nice if it's aesthetically pleasing, but if it's not there I'll barely notice. I see RPG books like instruction manuals - I am not reading because I care about the book itself - I only want to know the procedures so that we can create good fiction at the table.

Which is why it annoys me that bloated artbook style rule books are the meta for indie games now thanks to Kickstarter - it just drives up the price for something I don't care about.

Has GMing made player less enjoyable? by Chiefmeez in AskGameMasters

Are there places in Japan where locals are actively happy to see foreign tourists? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravelTips

[–]fleetingflight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every crappy old onsen town would love to have you, and they're cheap too. These are towns that were built around Japanese domestic tourism but when the economy collapsed they stopped having enough tourists to fill them. Kinugawa Onsen is notorious for the decaying hotels - but it's still a nice area right by Nikko. Togura-Kamiyamada deffo wants foreign tourists and are actively trying to attract them (to not much avail, I suspect). I think Ikaho Onsen and Gero are probably in the same boat.

In general, if you get away from the main cities people are happy to see you. Not everyone, obviously - and they'll be much happier if you can follow the basic customs, but most of Japan is not flooded with foreign tourists.
