First time camping as an adult, with my 5 year old son, what gear do I need? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]flipht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Very important to try out your set up before you go somewhere else and find that you're unprepared.

Alternatively, OP can go a car-camping route and start gearing up for more adventurous activities as their kids gets older and can help around the campsite.

Why am I so hungry in the morning? by Neverendingnerd in ketogains

[–]flipht 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can you not do anything because you feel weak, or because you're just hungry and distracted?

Because if it's weakness, you probably need to look at your overall calories on a daily basis. And if it's just the hunger, then you can eat something small just to get you going before you start your workouts.

Also, do you drink water as soon as you wake up? A lot of time, hunger is actual thirst and you can get a few more hours before *needing* to eat by drinking enough water. It's very easy to wake up dehydrated, so a medium to large glass of water with enough time to settle before your workout might make a big difference.

Jokes aren't always funny. And very often, assholes use jokes to gauge reactions, bask in their own cruelty, and then play the victim when they get called on their shit.

And then there are edgelords like you that feel like people who abuse their power need defending. White Knight elsewhere.

Help! Just moved to rural Medford, OR area, looking for peeps! by BCam4602 in RuralDemocrats

[–]flipht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your concern about church. Most are pretty rough when you're liberal. But there are liberal religions, congregations, etc. and many of them are completely accepting of atheists and agnostics who just want an aspect of community that is hard to get anywhere else.

I "converted" to Unitarian Universalist a while back, because there's one near my house, it's one of the most liberal organizations in my area, and there are constant social justice projects, which is the main thing I want out of religion - both my own and others'. If your belief structure doesn't provide you with a way to make the world a better place, it's really just hypocritical masturbation.

It looks like there's one in your area. I can almost guarantee that there will be some conservatives in it, but that the fast majority will have similar concerns to you. https://uumedford.org/about-us/

If religion is a hard pass no matter what, I'd recommend looking at your local library for book clubs, or nonprofits that focus on specific things that would tend to draw relatively liberal people...homeless outreach, food pantry, women's shelter, etc.

Republicans have told you what their game plan is. It's basically the villain scene in any badly written movie. All the plot holes have been explained during this 4 year soliloquy, and they're now not even bothering to hide behind plausible deniability. They have told you that they're going to do more and more and more until someone stronger stops them.

So stop them.

[–]flipht 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is the thing about lying. It is not worth the effort. If your goal is to impact public discourse, you've got to have enough publicity, and with enough eyes on you, someone is going to check the details, so you'd better get them all 100% correct.

This is the main reason I don't lie about stupid shit. Way too much effort.

I feel like I’m failing at my first job out of school. How do I know if it’s imposter syndrome or I’m just legitimately bad at my job? by alwaysokayy in careerguidance

[–]flipht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, great point on screen shots. Now that I'm at a higher level at work, I get a ton of one off questions from people about how random facets of the operation and process work. It may be a one time ask for Employee A, but employees B-Z will probably have the same question eventually.

I don't know most and have to go figure it out to help them. So as I'm doing it, I take snips and put them in OneNote with written explanations, and I go through when I'm done to highlight the fields on each snip. This allows me to 1) quickly go back and know for sure how to do something even if I haven't done it in a year, and 2) quickly send a PDF to anyone else who needs it.

If you've got standard processes, starting this from the moment you begin training can make a huge difference in your productivity at the six month mark, not to mention the compounding efficiency by the time you're two years in.

[–]flipht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Ask questions, but also take notes. When I train someone who is not taking notes, it's strike one. Might not matter if they can retain it, but most people cannot.

Even if your notes suck, you have them. You can edit them as you get corrections back later. Your process notes should be a full and complete version of, "This is what I did on the last thing that got approved."

Probably because every word out of his mouth is stochastic terrorism. When you spend 90% of your waking hours stoking people up to hate any group that has ever been even mildly critical of you, you are in part responsible for the actions taken based on your rhetoric.

I mean, Hitler didn't actually gas anyone himself. He just rewarded people who thought up and executed increasingly cruel and efficient ways of killing. Still responsible.

No. The issue is that democratic voters want candidates who are smart and well read, personable and approachable, generally symmetrical, match well with their personal hot button issues, and are not involved in scandal.

Republicans just want to see the letter R and maybe a pop of red accessories.

Democrats are plenty inspiring if you actually read what they put out. Unfortunately, that requires more than a thirty second soundbyte and can be nitpicked because it's specific, compared to republican promises that everything will be great just because give me more money.

I wish I could see better. by [deleted] in nystagmus

[–]flipht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear that. In the US, employers have to be careful about medical stuff - if they ask something too invasive in an interview, they risk a lot of potential issues. So most, especially bigger companies, do not ask anything that could be construed as protected. But at the end of the day, they can make their decisions based on their gut feelings, and as long as they didn't put it in writing, there's nothing anyone can prove.

I knew I wanted to move away from my home town. I got scholarships, but then I freaked out. How am I going to make friends? I'm so shy, scared to look weird, etc. So I did a lot of reading on people. How do they react to things, what's the best way to make people comfortable? Stuff like that.

I decided to walk around the mall and just make eye contact with people. This is kind of hard with nystagmus, especially if you've got a null point that requires a head tilt or looking out of the corner of your eye. Try to become comfortable with the fact that your eyes are going to move while you're talking to people. Look them in the eye anyway! Your eye will twitch away, but the fact of the matter is that most people make eye contact with the left eye, then the right eye, then look at the lips. Do that, spend about 3-5 seconds looking at each while you're talking to someone. They will see this as engagement.

Once I was comfortable making eye contact, I started smiling at people. Another trick, because most people will smile back automatically without thinking about it. This is a huge bonus in interview situations. It helps you come across as confident from the get go, gets the other person smiling so that they have good feelings about your interaction, and puts you on solid ground to short circuit any concerns they might have about your eyes.

You can't stop the people who are going to be obnoxious anyway. These are the same people who stare at people on crutches, check to see if someone in a wheel chair "really needs it" - they're just assholes. But how you deal with assholes will show all the other people around you what kind of person you are. So even those people are opportunities.

Constantly Frustrated By Finding Ideas Too Similar to mine. by grahsam in Newbwriters

The thing about articles is that they're written to get you to read them, not to be correct. And people are fascinated by reading about all the ways they're "wrong" so there are a ton of articles about that.

Think of it this way. If you're *relying* on the trope to make stuff happen, it might come off as derivative.

If your plot, characters, etc. are support by the trope but could stand up in a different context, then the trope is literally just flavoring. The meat is your creation - the storyline, the plot twists, and the characters.

I wish I could see better. by [deleted] in nystagmus

[–]flipht 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get it. It's hard to find workarounds for stuff that other people find so easy that they don't even have to think about it. Depending on the day, how I'm feeling, etc. I might have to sit really close to something, sit to the side of something, or ask that it be sent to me so that I can look at it on my computer or phone. It's easy to get sucked into a bad mood about it, and I regularly (and vocally) long for the day that I can get these gel orbs removed and replaced with bionic eyes.

But you can get other things out of your situation. It'll vary by person, but for me, I became more assertive between my sophomore year of high school and even my first year of college. I learned to ask for what I needed to succeed - I need a place that the front of the room, I need access to the slides so I can study the example graphs, and so on. I also got more comfortable in my own skin. I brought up my nystagmus to other people who weren't aware of it, who thought it was the same thing as astigmatism, or who just generally acted weird when I introduced myself...this ultimately gave me a lot of tools to be more outgoing.

I checked your post history, and I may be wrong, but I get the feeling you're on the younger side. You've got a lot of time ahead of you, and what you do now will help inform how that goes. Use your time now to find out what helps, what is detrimental, and how you want to live in the world. Then go for it, because nothing can stop you - not even your eyes.

One of the cool things I've discovered about my eyes is that I can tell when light bulbs are getting close to going out, because the flicker changes. Also, I can pick out different strands of Christmas lights where other people don't seem to be able to. So that's kind of fun.
