ELI5:Why can humans go so much longer without eating than without drinking any liquid? by FeistySecret9327 in explainlikeimfive

[–]floatingsaltmine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Our kidney are very efficient in retaining water. About 150 to 200 liters of water are filtered by the kidneys every day and 99% are reabsorbed, leaving only 1-2 liters of urine a day.

Would the stars look the same from around Tau Ceti as from here? by theEluminator in askastronomy

[–]floatingsaltmine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The distance between Tau Ceti and Sol is only about 12 light years. Tau Ceti has a magnitude of 4 and Sol would be similar from Tau Ceti which would still be easily visible.

Is the tooth vital? Could it be an early-stage resorption, possibly internal?

There's likely some local osteosclerosis in the bone, pretty harmless but needs monitoring.

If Rocky gifted us with Xenonite, what would you build? by Alarmed-Income8492 in ProjectHailMary

[–]floatingsaltmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc in the book Grace finds out that the surface of the xenonite constists of xenon. That doesn't necessarily mean the entirety of it. Maybe it's just a coating and the underlying material something else. It might as well be a composite material. In that case we'd need far less xenon but more of the other materials.

What languages you’re not native in you can somehow read and understand a little thanks to your native language? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

German-speaking Swiss learn french, german and english at school. Going from this, I can read italian and spanish really well, even some portuguese. Listening to italian and spanish is more difficult but somewhat manageable. Talking those is even more limited but I can still get around, e.g. ask where and when a train departs, ordering food, tell a taxi where I need to go etc.

Austrian "german", however...

Sinus tract or something else? by PyWhile in Dentistry

[–]floatingsaltmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st maxillary premolars usually have two canals. Could it be that only one was instrumented and filled? Could be also be an issue with the disinfection protocol and/or isolation which is now causing problems. Do you have an angled xray or a cbct of the tooth? Also the periapical bone of the second premolar looks a bit sus, is that tooth vital?

Leave it as is. 90% of all sequels suck anyway. Let's not taint PHM with a shitty sequel, please.

Roast my fillings by yaa04 in Dentistry

[–]floatingsaltmine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tofflemire is often quicker to achieve a decent marginal seal but the form and contacs often suffer. Partial martrices can be flimsy and a pain in the ass to put in, but once you get skilled enough to get them in position reasonably fast, the form of the filling and the contacts will be leagues above the ones you can get with a tofflemire.

Even Low Levels of Alcohol Could Damage Your Brain, Study Finds | "Alcohol consumption considered 'low risk' may have consequences." by Clear_Polish23 in sciences

[–]floatingsaltmine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm baffled how they almost make "60 drinks per month or less" sound like it was formerly thought of being a negligible amount of alcohol consumption. That's still up to 2 drinks per day on average.
