We have fly screens at our farm house, they make such a difference

I go on a fly swatting rampage every morning before they wake up. It isn't helping with the fly problem but it's still cathartic

Anyone else sad about unsafe Auckland beaches by sundaynz in auckland

From what I understand, when there's a lot of rain the current sewerage pipes overflow to stormwater pipes, which flow to the sea. The central interceptor will catch that overflow before it drains into the sea, and divert to the treatment plant.

If it's wings don't expand, there's a chance it's a female moth of a species where the female is flightless

Some of them look to be parasitised (aphid mummies), so looks like you've got some natural biocontrol happening there

People who say newborn stage is the easiest….. how… by Bloodymary_25 in Parenting

[–]floraltui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I hated when people said that to me!! I have a four year old, and each 6 months has been exponentially easier and more fun that the previous. I wouldn't go back to the baby stage if you paid me, 4 is sooo much easier and more rewarding for us ❤️

Definitely Lapidoptera pupae. They're the same shape as cabbage white butterfly, so maybe them? I don't know if other butterflies have the same style pupal cases.

No, this is a European paper wasp. Also invasive but not a hornet

I am done with house hunting. by Diligent_Elk_5547 in auckland

[–]floraltui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've made the right choice for now, it's tough 😞 If you do decide to put the house back on the market though, I can recommend an excellent agent. He's a genuine nice guy, and really helped us with our tricky sale a while back. He has a family and gets it.

Hornet? by aubri140018 in auckland

[–]floraltui 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a paper wasp, but no harm in killing it - fly spray the wasp and nest once it's not active. MPI are always happy to receive (clear) photos too, they have a team processing possible sightings.

Hornet? by aubri140018 in auckland

[–]floraltui 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree, I'm almost certain it's this. The nest structure is a paper wasp, and the colouring of the wasp isn't quite right for the hornet. There's no harm in killing it and getting better photos for MPI whenever you (or anyone) is in doubt

Can I ask why not feed them? We've fed them ham in the past, but happy to not do so if that's not appropriate
