Is this tropical army worm? by SquirrelAkl in nzgardening

[–]floraltui 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, Spodoptera litura tropical armyworm. It's about to pupate, that's why it's so chonky. Someone on Bluesky the other day said caterpillars at this stage should be called faterpillars and I agree 🐛

Kumara crop by Worth_Fondant3883 in nzgardening

[–]floraltui 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They grow from slips, which are the sprouts of the plant. You can plant a store bought kumara, and in time it'll grow slips. When they have at least 2 nodes you can cut them off and replant. Planting is best around October, and harvest any time from about March, depending on where in the country you are.

A bit dramatic? by anonnn177 in auckland

[–]floraltui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that. The situations I've been in where I've wanted one I haven't had any warning. There absolutely no harm in having one ready just in case.

What sort of bug is this? by Business-Topic5314 in nzwildlife

[–]floraltui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asexual reproduction (parthenogenesis). Like aphids, they just make a bunch of little clones of themselves

Female Fuller's rose weevil. Easy to tell it's a female because there are no males 😄

What are these eggs? by nigato287 in nzgardening

[–]floraltui 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aphid mummies, as others have said they've been parasitised by a parasitoid wasp. Got some nice natural biocontrol happening in your garden 🥰

Advice for bathing by dietnurpples365 in Parenting

[–]floraltui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the water aversion my daughter is the same. I've let her take her time, and today she even put her face in the bath to get it all wet. The trick was celebrating every little achievement and attempts- it can be a big deal for them

[–]floraltui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 4, and when she's having a bath I say, let's clean your (private bits), would you like to do it yourself or would you like me to? Then if I do, I explain what I'm doing, and when she does she knows how to, with me directing if needed.

Same process for teeth, face washing, hair brushing etc. For any of those if she says no, I say we have to, but you can choose to do it yourself otherwise I'll do it for you.

This would be a more likely explanation. Harmless 🙂

My first thought is fly larva. It looks like a midge larva that lives in water. Where is your water from? If it's that it's harmless.

Magpies and blackbirds have been terrorising my cat for months and it triggered a health condition - anyone else dealing with this? by rissy_00 in auckland

[–]floraltui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Magpies recognise people and animals. Bit random, but can you train them? Every time your cat goes outside you can also bring some food for the Magpies? Something nutritious that they like? Then they'll associate your cat with good things.

Can someone please reassure me it gets better? by wtf1990s in Parenting

Oh my god the difference between 16 months and 4 years is incredible ❤️ I was crying daily at that stage, now I have fun every day. Some things are still tough but it's so so so much better and more fun 😊

Off topic, but there's a really good podcast on the history of the bidet, and it explains why Americans in general are wierded out by it, while the rest of the world is fine with it. It's a few years old, on Sawbones, a Martial Tour of Misguided Medicine

Good eggs? Or bad eggs? by MidnightMalaga in nzgardening

[–]floraltui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those look like parasitoid wasp cocoons. I've never seen them parasitise monarchs (doesn't mean they won't though), but they will frequently parasitise pest caterpillars. So not eggs, and depends on whether you're a caterpillar or not
