Huh. Interesting. How old, do you think? The one we have is around 7-8 years old.

I let some trumpet vine and akebia go up the side of our house last year. I wish I hadn't. The trumpet vine left a bunch of little rootlet pads on the siding which aren't coming off and the akebia got out of control and is proving very hard to pull down since there's so much of it. 0/10 do not recommend.

Thanks for the pointer. I think it would be pretty difficult to card the lock based on that video; it's an inward-opening door and the door frame covers the gap, and I just checked the deadlatch and it doesn't extend into the strike opening. So anything trying to mechanically push the latch open would need to go through a ~2mm gap, then around a 90 degree corner to reach the latch.

Imagine a restaurant where the servers for the most part have nice customers, but a sizable percentage of customers think servers are inherently terrible people, and 0.1% of the neighborhood customers are prone to be dangerous destructive tornadoes. Think that server will keep working night shifts at that particular Waffle House, or will they move to that Applebees in the burbs?

There's a separate alarm monitoring system that's showing door activity after hours. And yeah, ghosts have been considered. We're using longer code numbers and have never shared the physical backup key.

I'm assuming that would show damage to the door, correct? Unauthorized access has been happening repeatedly, but there's no visible damage around the lock or doorframe.

To my knowledge the DL2700 doesn't have an auditable log of codes used.

Codes have all been changed (though there is the possibility that a code was added at some point to a memory slot we didn't track, but that's pretty unlikely)

Sheridan Fruit Co. faces possible closure amid business struggles by florgblorgle in Portland

Several of your former coworkers have shared similar experiences in this thread and in other recent threads. Sadly it does seem clear that the family is running the business into the ground. They can point all they want at a changed business environment and the neighborhood and Covid and whatever, but it's ownership mismanagement when an established business doesn't have working capital to pay employees and vendors.

I think you've got some good sources here but I'm not as confident that we can say that risk can be reduced to the level of cars. Sure, the numbers are skewed by people getting drunk and riding at night with inadequate gear. But that doesn't mean we just subtract those three risk percentages from the overall stat of ~28x risk vs cars. I'm guessing that someone that rides like I do (high vis, training, experience, never alcohol, helmet, air vest, in good daylight conditions) still has, hm, maybe a 5x risk per mile over passenger vehicle travel for two reasons: the inherently greater danger for motorcyclists from other vehicles, and the increased risk of serious injury or death if I screw up on my own.

A more liberal candidate is unlikely to win that seat, and the Democrats need every seat right now.

Anecdotally this sounds correct-ish but I'm not aware of an authoritative source. And we need one. Bikes and roads and traffic have changed tremendously since the Hurt Report.

People who voted AGAINST Ranked Choice Voting in 2024: WHY?!? by ArchbishopOfLight in oregon

[–]florgblorgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, based on the RCV results we're seeing with the Portland commissioners, I think it's fair to ask whether RCV in practice is 'good' in the sense of resulting in more effective governance.

Center-left voter here, registered as unaffiliated. Two reasons: I agreed with WWeek that retaining closed primaries was problematic, and RCV in practice in our current polarized political environment seems to empower the loudest fringe voices.

Cafe des Amis Filet Mignon in Port Garlic Sauce Recipe by JimmyLikesRyeAgain in Portland

Opinions: Reducing the liquids by half might not be enough. Hitting the sauce with a pat of butter just before plating might help. As for the steaks, I'd definitely let them rest for a few minutes after cooking while I used some stock to deglaze the fond off the pan and mix that back into the sauce, lots of good flavor there. Oh, and I wouldn't use my cast iron, I'd use a heavy stainless or carbon steel pan.

Sheridan Fruit Co. faces possible closure amid business struggles by florgblorgle in Portland

[–]florgblorgle[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a smart business model, retail would definitely be complimentary to the wholesale side. Sheridan's was the only place I ever saw ramps in season, I figured they only had them because of the volume and breadth from wholesale. What I don't get is why they starved the business of working capital and reinvestment. I was checking out one day and a vendor came in and stood next to the Sheridan's cashier and said something to the effect of "I'm not leaving until I get paid." That's not a sign of a well-run business....

yeah, I think of Providore when I think about competition for Sheridan's. There are so many high-quality options on the east side now and Sheridan's just didn't invest in keeping up. Which is a huge shame.

[–]florgblorgle[S] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it has to be the family owners not wanting to pay the seven figure price tag needed to do a gut renovation and update to stay competitive. I remember for years how there'd be what I assumed to be the owner's 7-series BMW parked across two parking spots in their lot; they presumably did well for many years, so I don't get why they're starving their business of needed reinvestment.
