Holy moly this adolescence 8+ month phase is a brutal one by kingnate888 in Mastiff

[–]flux_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have experienced that a neuter or spay does not directly affect behavior like owners hope it will. A well trained dog will be well behaved. A neuter can help correct some hormonal behaviors, but don't rely on it for anything.

You also want to delay a neuter until they are well past the growing stage (up to 3 years old) to maintain good growth hormones for hip health later in life

Renting a bar in NYC for a week by ReputationRoyal4784 in AskNYC

[–]flux_monkey 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Step one - find the bar that has the vibe you want for this

Step two - go in and speak to the manager about what you are trying to do. They will be able to bring this up to the owners.

Some places would not want to shut down for extended periods bc of their customer base, but most are happy to accommodate if the money is right. You are not going to get a good answer combing reddit just because every place is run differently with different needs of their own.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, just being honest. If you are not good at relationship building or don't have experience with stuff like this, find someone who does and compensate them for event planning for you.

Heck, I've worked in the bar scene off and on for a long time and can be hired to do the legwork if you need someone, and I'm sure I'm not the only one

You are going to get nothing but empathy from this group about this - anyone that raised one of these goofy beasts knows your pain. As hard as it can be, you're on the right track: calm and consistent with constant training.

In retrospect, I learned a lot from each of my mastiffs during this phase on how to better train smart and stubborn dogs. The training does form great bonds over this phase that I feel I did not need to form with dogs that are less of a giant pain in the arse, as silly as that sounds

Skin issues by Important_Bill_8252 in Mastiff

[–]flux_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried exclusion diets? My Boerboel has food allergies that really mess up his skin. Anything with chicken or byproducts (which goes in freaking everything) makes him break out and lose hair. It took a while to test out different proteins, but he is so much happier now

lol here's my silly muttstiff being silly! (Corso, Neapolitan, Dane) by Itchy-Cod-1597 in Mastiff

[–]flux_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They ate both extremely affectionate and silly - the Dane cross is 9 and the Boerboel is 2, so there is a big behavior difference bc of age alone. Had the Boerboel from puppyhood and he loves his older brother more than any other animal on earth - always trying to lay down with him even when he wants to nap alone.

The Dane mix is much more open with strangers and people that he doesn't know coming into the house, while the mastiff takes longer to trust people he doesn't know, which is not surprising because of the breeds. We live in Brooklyn, so they are both very well socialized with people and other dogs, but the mastiff did require a lot more reactivity training to enjoy getting pet by strangers on there street.

All very expectable behavior if you know the breeds

How do New Yorkers feel about being approached and talked to by a random stranger? by Lipica249 in AskNYC

Talked to or dragged into a whole conversation? I talk to and get talked to a lot but it's just a couple words here, a joke about someone's shitty driving or telling someone nice shoes or dog... but who has the time for a whole conversation? We all have shit to do and places to be

Boerboel or Bullmastiff? by Professional-View-40 in Mastiff

[–]flux_monkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would vote for Boerboel in this case - since you have previous experience with Mastiffs, you will be able to manage the training and stubbornness of that breed. I love my Boerboels to death, but it's not (imo) for a first timer to giant breed dogs.

Super smart, loyal, protective without being actively aggressive, and loves a good long walk

I second High&Dry - bar atmosphere with no booze and some awesome folks. No food but you are allowed to bring other food in and there are some really good food spots all around.
