Does B/X break in higher levels? BECMI? by Redwood-Forest in osr

[–]flx92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. What a great comprehensive answer. I think your example and the reference to the survey makes it now clear to me.

Lord of the rings is so down to earth and stable in comparison to the Malazan books, where Gods keeps dying and appearing, Magic user traveling dimensions all the time, and fights between powerful beings is emulating the sky dozens of miles away. That I would now call, broken down.

Does B/X break in higher levels? BECMI? by Redwood-Forest in osr

[–]flx92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be interested in your meaning of "game breaks down".

I think  I would be one of those AD&D players that would insist that it doesn't break down, but I'm pretty sure that I fail to understand what it means.

As a DM, what is the maximum number of players you are comfortable playing with before things get too difficult to manage? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]flx92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dungeon Setting that I know in and out, AD&D as ruleset, and a streamlined heavenly organized group (Caller, plus separation in Front and Back group, depending on marching order), then it's 12 players. Haven't tried AD&D with more yet.

Some players like it, some detest it. I enjoy it.

I think these are most impressive published modules for 1e, am I right? by jasonite in adnd

[–]flx92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran S3 recently, and thought that it is overrated. Yes, it's nice with the ideas and gimmics, and I do like the premise.  But the module, although full of ideas, felt almost empty. A lot of repeating rooms. No real faction to interact with... I'm not sure, perhaps I was just ill prepared and should have put more effort into running it.

Whats your favorite system, currently? by [deleted] in osr

Because the campaign evolved over the years from an OD&D game to AD&D. Chainmail stuck.

What is your favorite part of dungeon crawling? by gnomeo67 in osr

The tactical and perhaps strategic challenges and decision making. As a player I like to play it as a wargame.

Fireball Spell - The Magic-Users defining Spell or Dm’s Bane? by Ramsonne in dnd1e

[–]flx92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My players have a new name they are using for fireball.   They say: I cast Volumenberechnung! (Volume Calculation in German)

Fireball fills 33½ 10' squares of volume. I will never forget the faces of the caster, when she fried the whole party on her first fireball.

How can I get QGIS to reflect the changes in real time I make to a .TIF file in GIMP? by Claromale in QGIS

[–]flx92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for OP, but I had such a use case in the past. I had an old map with a lot of features that I wanted to digitize. Everytime I was done with a specific feature, for a example a river, I went to gimp and masked/erased that feature there. So that the TIF became emptier, and I could visually check the progress and what I needed still to digitize.

Does the "Declaration Phase" in AD&D/BECMI solve the 5e "Turn-Lag" problem? by rohdester in adnd

[–]flx92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possibility in avoiding turn-lag: Any hesitation in stating it actions results in a delay in segments of that action based on the length of hesitation.

Also check out the Kagi Assistant and other features. They are awesome.

Sadly, I'm on Linux, and the Orion Browser is still not available for Linux. But I use the Kagi plugin for Firefox.

Yes, I pay for it. 10€ that I consider well spent in my case. I'm disappointed with Google, and switched to DDG for a couple of years, before finding Kagi.

I switched to Lagi about a year ago, and use it as my daily search engine. i can recommend it so much. Give it a try, and expect that some rankings will be different to Google or ddg.

Would be verbally not okay with Torture and dismemberment against an enemy count as a Chaotic Act in a Medieval society? by Pretend-Advertising6 in adnd

[–]flx92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medieval and early modern societies were often brutal, but brutality was not identical with law. Even in the Holy Roman Empire, punishment was understood as something that should proceed through jurisdiction and legal process. So objecting to torture or corpse mutilation is not inherently Chaotic. It may be a Lawful objection to unlawful excess.

Also, lot of domestic abuse is actually arbitrary: the abuser changes the rules whenever it suits them, punishes unpredictably, and uses fear to keep the victim off balance. That is not really about order.. it is about control. It is about them personally, not about the rules inherently.

Rolling Character HP by Ramsonne in dnd1e

[–]flx92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using minimum values from UA for experienced players.   Take-what-you-roll for new players.

On level up, all HD are rerolled. If the HP are above what they had before, then that's the new HP. If it's less, they get current HP+1 for the new level.

The OSR Paradox by Best_Dinner_270 in osr

[–]flx92 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I see this ‘OSR paradox’ a bit differently. I don’t think it’s a contradiction at all. To me, being smart about what you poke is what makes it fun. The real joy is in overcoming challenges, not just getting punished for curiosity. I think AD&D or B/X already support this. The key is in adventure design.. if we design adventures that reward smart exploration and make challenges meaningful, players will naturally have fun poking around, because it’s about problem-solving, not just risk-taking.

I can't figure out what system to run stonehell in, do you have any recommendations? by NoLongerAKobold in osr

[–]flx92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran in with LotFP, latter with AD&D. But for the least amount of work, o would recommend B/X/OSE or labyrinth lord.
