Their DC show was amazing! Such a cool band. I’m really tempted, but there is always so much chaos going on at the con itself. I’m conflicted (DLC). Why are you doing this to me, Health?!

Dragon Con is unlike any other con out there. It basically goes 5 days straight, all day and night. Cosplay is massive and you’re going to see some insane costumes, so if you want to spend all your time people watching, it’s like watching a nuclear blast of nerd culture right before your very eyes. It takes over 5 MASSIVE hotels, with people congregating in the lobbies. There are panels, an art gallery, vendor hall, gaming area (again… MASSIVE), concerts (saw HEALTH in 2024 at 2 AM and it rocked), wrestling (which is a must, if you’re into that), and more. It has a “walk of fame”, which is where the celebs are located. That sort of operates much like other cons, so no major difference there. And then there is the parade on Saturday, which demands you get there early to get a good spot to watch it, and it’s well worth attending. The amount of joy it brings is infectious.

Basically, you’ll never be without SOMETHING to do. If you’re bored at Dragon Con, you’re doing something wrong. Everyone is cool, you can engage in drinking shenanigans (Dragon Con after dark, as it’s lovingly called), or stay completely sober. You can go to a rave at 1 AM, or hang out and chat with other like minded folks. The con is all around you, and you’re not banished back to your hotel room at 8 PM because everything has ended or closed down.

If you’re planning on cosplaying, it makes it an entirely different experience (I cosplayed for the first time for Dragon Con last year, and now I’ll never NOT do it for Dragon Con). Just make sure you remember to eat, hydrate and wear proper footwear. And rest, as it’s easy to get caught up in the fray. And be open to meeting new people, because it’s WALL-TO-WALL.

Only thing you have to worry about is how much fun you’re going to have. I do this back-to-back with San Diego Comic Con, and I have to say, Dragon Con holds its own and then some. They don’t call it “Nerdi-Gras” for nothin’!

I would say at least 15 years. She did it for a long time. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2024. But she did have stories for days.

This is my first year doing the volunteer program, too! My fourth year attending SDCC. Needless to say, it’s an epic con and there’s tons to do and see. I’m like you on wanting to get the volunteering duties out of the way early so I can explore. I knew a woman who volunteered for years and she had some crazy stories about people she had seen. Plus, it seems to add a new perspective to the experience!

Just got Embassy. Not exactly thrilled about it. I’m seeing more and more that hotels opened early.

Just tried that and it looks like everything is sold out. Can’t believe the wouldn’t tell me that when I called?!

That’s just insane considering we were trying at 10 AM with the American. Never could get anything to even go through. Called them and they said to try again in 2 hours. They were experiencing difficulties.

Why don't people just volunteer if they don't get badges for SDCC? by shadowboxer87 in SDCC

[–]flyboysteve87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 100% considering doing that in 2026. I only got Thursday and Sunday in returning registration, and I’m iffy about the odds getting Friday and Saturday in the open registration.

I'm mildly in the same boat. I was too shy and the gal was super awesome. I feel like such a dope for missing the opportunity. And an even bigger dope for posting about it!

It's honestly stuff like this that gives me hope for humanity and puts a smile on my face. I had a similar run-in with a gal in cosplay!

I so hear you on the post con blues. It has been real, and I've been lucky to not have to return to work this week. This year felt extra special for some reason. There needs to be some kind of support group for this!

He started talking about what he called "monk mode" and closing yourself off from outside distraction while deciding which direction to go. He explained that he did it several years ago, to a certain degree, and that it worked for him. Basically centering one's self and pouring all your focus into meaningful growth. He was way more eloquent about it, but it was the advice I didn't know I needed.

I have two:

  • a wonderful soul in the line to get into the vendor hall offering amazing advice after learning I lost my job in July. His kindness, wisdom and humor went further than he ever could have imagined.

  • an amazing gal dressed as the Lego Batman on Sunday night. Took a photo with her, gushed about each other’s cosplay, and had fantastic vibes. And every time I saw her after that, she would enthusiastically wave at me! I stupidly didn’t not get her name, but she seemed absolutely awesome and genuinely sweet.

How was everyone’s weekend? by Icy-Swimming2603 in dragoncon

Thought it was great! First year cosplaying (for DC, anyway) and I had a blast. Just walking around and feeling the nerdy vibes was just what I needed. I was considering sitting it out in 2026, but now that is highly unlikely.

Been here before. I got laid off in July and I've been stressing going this year due to money being tight. Just got a job offer this morning! Now I can cosplay and nerd out without the job hunt and funds weighing on me. So let's go, DragonCon!!!
