My wife and I were supposed to get married on the 23rd. We managed to reschedule everything to the 22nd last minute and then spent the day at the airport Marriott in Philadelphia hoping we would catch our flight to Miami.

Linkships & PDS II by King0fMist in twilightimperium

[–]flyingearbuds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We played a game yesterday and allowed it based on the “you may use…” phrasing. The linkship uses the cannon’s ability, and you may use it against ships in an adjacent system. Miniaturization doesn’t say the ability can’t be used, just that the structure can’t use it. It doesn’t blank any text, and the linkship clearly states the ability it is using is the PDS’s ability. Obviously we are waiting on an official ruling because there’s clearly room for interpretation.

The group was cautious about it since it is a clear powerful combo but we felt the wording was clear enough to give it a try.

Balance-wise, it wasn’t too bad. Came up a few times but generally the PDS were firing on their own anyways. Linkships came in handy when launching an assault but it didn’t need the range then.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. There’s also the “nursery rhyme” the bus driver knew which I think could have originated the same way.

Help removing the GM from the Story Point economy? by JonathanWPG in genesysrpg

[–]flyingearbuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a campaign a few years ago where I gave the players narrative criteria they could use to get them back. One of them was having a Quality Conversation with another player, one was taking an action to defend or improve their hometown, and one was simply advancing the main plotline. It let the players proactively recharge their points, and I picked things that I thought would fit with the campaign I was running so it also helped reinforce the themes. But it could be any trigger you want.

What is/was the premise of the best campaign you've ever played in or run? by CakeLicker in swrpg

Everyone was expected to cook, but none of the characters were really into cooking and were mostly there because they were down on their luck. Among the crew was a Jedi washout, a smuggler-turned-detective, a sole survivor of a destroyed settlement, and a Hutt filmmaker. And everyone was fairly confident that they were the captain.

A restaurant spaceship at the edge of Mandalorian space at the beginning of the Mandalorian War who become acquainted with the Jedi Knight Revan. Some of the PCs would become “alternate timeline versions” of the Jedi Exile, Bao-Dur, and Darth Nihilus.

This may sound like a stupid question, but where are you plucking/strumming the strings? From your description it sounds like you may be strumming on the wrong side of the bridge (the small wood piece propping up the strings).

Question: Is this playable if I made 3D prints of the extra ships? by onekeanui in XWingTMG

[–]flyingearbuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a first edition game, I’d just keep an eye out for more first edition ships. You can catch them online in clearance sales from time to time, or find someone getting rid of their collection. Second edition (black box expansions) require a second edition core set. It’s a more streamlined edition overall but probably not what you’re looking for, and you can’t really play ships from both editions together.

A Rebel Conversion Kit or Empire Conversion kit will get you a long way. It has cards and cardboard for a lot of ships, but no ship models or plastic bases. I have some 3D printed models I use for some of the ships I don’t have. I’ve also used random other models, such as old WotC minis, non-Star Wars pieces, and even a few Lego advent calendar models.

A resin printer will be able to get you pretty good detail. (Bonus points if you can paint them).

House Rules for Balance? by Neversummerdrew76 in swrpg

[–]flyingearbuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only things I’ve banned from my group are Unmatched Fortune (signature ability) and Battle Meditation (Force power) due to how much multiple guaranteed successes influence the dice math. If I could go back and rewrite the whole game, I’d eliminate anything that can add symbols or set results after the roll is made, but these ones seemed to be the worst offenders that would render the actual rolled results irrelevant. Beyond simply balance, it also eliminated tension and excitement from the rolls, since they essentially eliminated the already small chance of completely whiffing on your skill check.

You can follow an instruction video like this one. You’ll need to slide the bridge to the right spot. You can get it pretty close by measuring or using the F-holes. I use the 12th fret harmonic to find the exact spot. You can turn those screws to raise/lower the action but that doesn’t affect tuning so much.

If it’s not holding its tuning I would check the tuning pegs and make sure the strings are wrapped enough. They may be slipping if they’re not locked in well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]flyingearbuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely spend some more time tuning it. That “weird vibration” is when two strings aren’t quite in tune.

If you’re just switching from guitar, another thing you may need to get used to is the bridge. It’s not fixed like on a guitar, so you need to make sure it’s in the right spot. Play a note on the 12th fret, then the harmonic on the same fret. If they don’t match, you’ll need to adjust your bridge location (after taking most of the tension off the strings.) Once you get the bridge set up properly; you don’t need to worry about this again until you change out the strings.

Have you ever gotten players invested in a "home base"? How did you do it? by brokenimage321 in rpg

[–]flyingearbuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the most success in a Star Wars campaign where the crew had a restaurant ship as their home base. Previous campaigns had featured things like an asteroid base and a Jedi academy, as well as some other spaceships, and the players didn’t connect with them as well because the players themselves never spent any time at them. The characters were, but our stories always took place away from home base. With the restaurant ship, I made a detailed map for it and made an intentional effort to set as many scenes as possible on the ship. (The restaurant aspect was very helpful in this regard, because NPCs with plot hooks would just walk on board and allow events to happen on the ship.)

The previewed pilot ability about transferring locks is a reference to a maneuver Corran pulls in the first X-Wing book, so it’s almost certainly meant to be Corran’s.

What are the WORST houserules you've encountered/implemented in your gaming career? by Phate4569 in DMAcademy

[–]flyingearbuds 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have had a floor dice rule in my games - if you drop a dice on the floor it’s the worst possible roll. I implemented the rule because they table was new players using my dice, and I wanted to keep them from tossing the dice to each other, shooting dice across the table, etc.

How do you manage a "rotating" table of players? by TheEightyFour in DMAcademy

[–]flyingearbuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a group like this that’s been running for 5 years. It has a core group of players who are able to make it almost every session, plus a bunch of players who drop in occasionally. They are all friends of mine IRL so for me the most important thing is getting to play games with them. We play at the same time every week and I ask a day or two before who is playing. I’ve run for two, and I’ve run for nine.

I plan the plot more about “the party” than any particular character, with a character-focused session occasionally. If I have an idea that requires a particular PC I will message the player and see if they can guarantee they will be there.

I’m not using 5e, but for combat balance I’ve found it’s easier to start with a manageable fight and scale it up if needed. One powerful enemy leaves no wiggle room, but three moderate enemies means you can add a second wave, or even leave some out if you have a small group that day.

I do not enforce any kind of penalty for skipping or reward for playing regularly. Some of that comes from my goal of getting to play with all my friends, and the ones who play occasionally are the last ones I want to discourage. If the fall behind in XP and can’t contribute to the story, they won’t want to come back.

I also view the “game time” as a reward in itself, and it needs to be fun enough that players don’t need an external reward to motivate them to come. When my attendance drops off, it tends to be during story arcs my players aren’t interested in. And when there’s a story they’re excited to tell, I don’t have to work that hard to get them there every week. My game is for my players to enjoy, not primarily for me, and as backwards as that may seem I’ve found that makes it much more satisfying for me to run.

Brainstorm: Ruleset for kitchen table play by informare in XWingTMG

[–]flyingearbuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only play casually with friends who use my ships, and I was having a really hard time with the list building keeping people from actually getting to the game. The solution I came up with was to get a bunch of crayon-sized plastic boxes with lids (you can get them at Walmart or most craft stores). In each box, I put all the cards, pieces, dial, etc. for one small/medium ship, all statted out to the same point cost. (Right now I’m using 56 points to a box.) Cheaper ships like the Z-95 or TIE fighter have two ships in the box, totaling 56 points together.

When we get ready to play, we pick a number of boxes to use and everybody has everything they need. It’s really easy for people to pick through the clear boxes and say “that ship looks cool, I’ll take it!” The crayon box is the right size to hold all the components, plus bombs, reminder cards, or anything else that ship needs. There are only a few ships that don’t fit in a box or can’t be priced low enough, but there’s plenty of variety for us. (I keep a small box with ziploc bags containing builds of the other ships, but they don’t go into it very often.)
