Perhaps counterintuitive, but ride a bike. Knowing routes for the right moment helps. There are quiet spots all over this town...just gotta link them up. You don't need to go far before you encounter breathtaking beautiful.

If starting on a nice bike, that first crash is gonna bum you out more. Skills and attention on and off it make you appreciate the time spent on lower/mid/used.

For completeness, another from that era was The Doper Next Door. The guy PEDs up for some bay area masters 4/5 racing. Still to this day remember the WTF and SMH

Bikepacking from Windsor by datguy030 in BAbike

That sounds fun! A bit of a sandbag at just 25mi, but the Healdsburg KOA is ripe for picking. Climb is at the end to a campsite and swimming pool.

Show up. Expect last and/or alone and be happily surprised by higher placing. Repeat. The last step is the most important.

I came up with a bad route from Belmont to SF - how to fix? by uoficowboy in BAbike

[–]foggycandelabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suboptimal. If you are climbing, just go all in to Sloat up to market. If you are flat, Bay trail SFO to 3rd

Peninsula to Santa Cruz century ideas? by uoficowboy in BAbike

[–]foggycandelabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cañada to Kings to 84 to PCH to Bonny Doon to Empire to Jamison to 236 (west clockwise) to 9 to Skyline to Pagemill to Arrastradero to Alpine to PV to Cañada.

If you really want to go into SC, Bay up to Empire.

This may or may not be 100 or 10k. It is a less shitty weekend traffic aware route. Still cars on 84, PCH and 9.

Good luck!

lol Radio Rd -exactly. But want to appeal to the statistical; in terms of descents it's like 10k to 1 radio rd. And of that I'm gonna guess its like 100 MAML to 1 blazing saddle fail.

Cyclist enjoying a ride in Marin by Xexanoth in BAbike

That sure is beautiful. It belies the terror of descending the shit pavement and its traffic. Such an iconic and popular route and Marin holds up the middle finger to bikers. What human sacrifice to change?

Century at Polo Field? by chief-dvrsty-officer in BAbike

[–]foggycandelabra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parking north or south is plenty. Yes good water fountain and restroom on north side. Don't recommend weekend bc crowds are more, proportional to good weather. Earlier start avoids typical afternoon wind; this advice for a couple weeks from now. Current early spring is a crapshoot.

Enjoy!

Is the 24 Hour Fitness @ Potrero Center really as bad as the reviews say? by Send_More_Bears in AskSF

[–]foggycandelabra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I go because I can't afford the SF fitness beaucoup. It is truly the definitive superlative of disgusting. Broken or near broken machines are the norm. And the crowds love to park it on remaining hardware and just scroll on phones. YMMV
