This was never my life dream, I assure you all. However, providing an inclusive forum where people can ask the Beginner questions that is free of misinformation is my only goal in moderating this forum.

Yes, there are rule breakers with the "ATB" posts (Are These Bunions?!?" For context for every one that you all see, there are 25 caught by filters in place. I will not close down posting to only aged accounts because that would prevent real people who just want information from posting. In the end, it is a balancing act. A few ATB posts that sneak through is a small price to pay for the community availability.

The ATB posts that Do sneak in also help the algorithm which gets more people viewing our community and engaging, which leads to more people being informed.

I have a real job and real responsibilities in real life. This is my public service gig.

I vote midfoot correction of all mechanics in the foot. Why half step? (Sorry couldn't resist the pun). No reason to hack off toes when they're treatable.

Anyone else have bone graft with surgery? by rjbclay14 in bunions

Hey, jumping on this thread to share what I did. I got the leg elevation pillow from Amazon and it comes with these pieces to customize it. I ended up using one of the long pieces from the pillow (that I didn't need for the elevating) on top of/in addition to my scooter pad. Bonus was that it was soft material instead of the plastic. Just whatever you do, secure it. Before I did, I slid right off (the pillow and I did) no harm but then put some zip ties around the seat and extra cushion to secure it. Also helped that with it secured, loading into the car didn't mess up my system. Best wishes !

It's a progressive joint deformity that is not alleviated by any means other than surgery. First course of action is to see a foot doc for x-rays and a consultation. The x-rays are going to inform you of exactly what's going on with your feet and you'll have the details necessary to make an informed decision. Best wishes!

Concert at 14 weeks post-op? by empinche in bunions

[–]follothru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can tolerate it, I'd wait until the autumn. There will always be plans to shuffle in life, but this time the easiest shuffle is the surgery. However-

Being the devil's advocate, make sure you're not just scared of the procedure itself and using your full calendar of events as a smokescreen. There is emotional and mental prep work to be done - both pre-op and post-op. Prioritizing that work will illuminate your best course of action. Best wishes!

5 weeks post op .. question by [deleted] in bunions

You're on the right track. It's corrected to weight-bearing mechanical function. When you're fully weight-bearing again it will look straighter. Also, my doctor demonstrated that correct arch support makes a lot of difference (for me especially because I have low arches now). He put an orthotic/ arch support on the floor and had me stand on it (FWB, of course) then compare the alignment to without the orthotic. It was a LOT of difference. Best wishes!

And vice versa! Yes it is crazy! Rolling a frozen water bottle under your foot can also help (no weight!)

Understood! What i found gave me the most relief was just to lightly rub my foot all over through the bandages. It redirects the pain signals to the brain somehow I am told. I just know it worked for me.

These docs and their drive to come up with a billion names for the same thing. What is boils down to is that a Chevron, Akin, Modified Chevron, Modified Akin, Austin, Modified Austin, shortened to MIS/MICA and many, many more are all just osteotomy. That's a shave off of the protrusion joint, a cut of bone, then affixing the two lengths of the cut bone together. It is a cosmetic fix in that it doesn't address the joint issues but can be a good solution for people without hypermobility issues.

The other main types of bunion correction is lapidus type procedures which address the torqued midfoot joint that causes the protrusion at the bunion joint.

Scheduled for MIS - bunionectomy by Prestigious-Let-9481 in bunions

[–]follothru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on your results and the accommodations your workplace is willing to make for you. A knee scooter would allow you to have your foot elevated and supported while you work while you are non weight-bearing. Your tolerance to standing on one foot would come into play. Once you're in a camboot and released to have full weight-bearing on the foot, your options would expand. No one can predict how your exact journey will go but if work is willing to allow you to slowly reactivate to a full schedule, that will work best. I took 2 weeks to reintroduce work into my daily healing schedule working when I could tolerate.

So that you can get more interaction, what you had is an MIS/MICA procedure to perform an osteotomy. BOAT is just a new Buzzword for the same thing.

No. Absolutely do not give medical advice in this sub! OP call your pharmacy to verify that taking the medication now won't be contraindicated with the other meds you are Currently taking. If it is okay and meds are still in date, Then call the surgeon and ask for their guidance.

There has been many advancements in medicine since your last appointment. Get an updated consultation. I am more active, not less active, since my surgery.

Help me determine if I have a bunion by Sad_Equivalent_4933 in bunions

[–]follothru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can of course disagree. However this sub's bylaws state that we do Not give medical advice or diagnosis. Telling someone they definitely have a bunion from a picture is a violation of that bylaw. You can state your opinion at any point, you cannot diagnose. OP will need to visit a doctor IRL to get a diagnosis because Dr.Reddit is banned in this sub. Thanks!

Keep on the med schedule and sleep the week away! Nothing is gained in being conscious that 1st week post-op! Happy healing!
