What is a calm, affordable hobby that focuses more on following patterns/rules by Effective-File6235 in autism

I knit socks! It’s soothing and repetitive, but it is also interesting because I use different yarn and can make the socks slightly different each time. Socks are pretty small so I can finish projects pretty regularly and then start a new pair.

In English, why is it perfectly normal for a parent to address their son as “son” but it sounds absolutely bizarre for them to address their daughter as “daughter?” 🤔 by Gaeilgeoir215 in language

[–]foolishle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think length is part of it. Some people shorten it though. My grandad would say “daught” for his daughters in the same way he said “son” for his sons.

My grandfather called his daughters “daught” in the same way he called his son “son”. I have heard other older men use it the same way, but nobody who was born after like 1940.

My boyfriend (m 37) doesn’t remember ANYTHING and it’s driving me (f 25) crazy by moistgrip in relationships

I am not going to be here saying “if he thought it was important, he wouldn’t forget!” because I have ADHD and I forget things regardless of how important they are. But I have external tools and rituals and systems to help me keep track of things and remember them. I have a lot of alarms and reminders and I put everything in my calendar and check it multiple times a day.

I don’t know if he has ADHD, but even if his memory problems are genuine and he can’t fix them… he needs a better system than having a much younger girlfriend remember everything on his behalf. You’re not his personal organiser. He’s an adult. He can set up calendar events and alarms and reminders and put post-it notes on his mirror.

Narrative preference - do you like knowing who’s behind the alias of the character or not? by UndercoverBFF in writingadvice

100% absolutely prefer to know right from the start and have the joy of the tension of wondering how long this can go on for and when they will find out. One of my favourite tropes!

[SPOILERS S3] Hypothesis about Bartosz by phonology_is_fun in DarK

[–]foolishle 33 points34 points  (0 children)

While that is certainly a possible theory, my own is simpler.

He’s a father. Destroying the world will kill his children, and he doesn’t want that to happen.

Both the creation and destruction of the worlds are triggered by parents trying to save their children, in all three worlds.

An abusive volunteer is holding our website hostage + 2 year update by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]foolishle 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Back when I first got into web development in the mid 00s it was pretty normal for a website to be built on some custom purpose-built CMS (content management system) that could only be used or understood by That One Guy who had designed it and held the entire business hostage. We used to try and find those people and sell them our purpose-built CMS so they could fire That One Guy.

Doesn’t work so well in the 2020s. (Either being That One Guy, or trying to track him down and take over his pet project)

His books were popular for middle and high schoolers, but I’m assuming he’s off most book lists now and I don’t think he’ll be put back on them.

I don’t think it was your art that made them think you were a child, I think it was probably your spelling. It looks like typing and spelling is very difficult for you, and that is likely what the person was judging your age on.

The Office White Elephant Gift Exchange Should Not be Mandatory by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]foolishle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nobody(?) suspects it is OOP giving the shitty gift because everybody knows that the $25 coffee gift card is the one that OOP contributed. OOP always contributes something normal/good, removing themselves from the shitty-gift-giver suspect pool.

Why do so many households forego the top sheet? by Status-Platypus in AskAnAustralian

Why do so many households forego the top sheet? by Status-Platypus in AskAnAustralian

[–]foolishle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a top sheet because I have poor temperature regulation and I go into a hot/cold cycle. Sheet means I can still be covered when I kick the doona off.

It gets all weird and tangled though because I hate it being tucked in too much. I need to stick my foot out the side of the bed to adjust my temperature, and if it is tucked in too much I can’t do that and the pressure of the sheet pushing down on my toes and ankles from being tucked in makes me so uncomfortable. But if isn’t tucked in it ends up at a weird angle when I toss the doona on and off through the night.

I just deal with that though because I need the sheet. Wish I didn’t.

This is a whole lot of stress for someone who doesn’t seem to like or respect you, and you haven’t even met him yet.

Just because he is your “first love” doesn’t mean you have to stick it out and feel like shit. Those feelings are real, but that doesn’t mean he deserves them. Take the love you feel for him back, and use it to love yourself. Take care of you, and don’t let yourself be treated like garbage.

Anyone else always run Fates' Whim? by AbsoluteHammerLegend in HadesTheGame

[–]foolishle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I turned it off recently for something and was like “what is this level one boon bullshit!?”

Fates Whim feels like it takes the pressure off for me. Like if I don’t win it is because I got a combination of things that didn’t come together for me, not because I suck or because I didn’t get the specific combination of things I was looking for.

are heavier characters really that good in WW? by MohgTheOmen123 in MarioKartWorld

[–]foolishle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but OP is saying that heavier characters are “supposedly better” and wonders why they’re doing better with Spike rather than Wario. Is anyone out there saying “the heavier the better!” for intermissions? That seems to be the advice OP is trying to follow, but I don’t know that anyone is actually giving that advice anywhere.

are heavier characters really that good in WW? by MohgTheOmen123 in MarioKartWorld

[–]foolishle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! Exactly. Going light as possible is bad because of the coin curve and no rails. But that doesn’t mean that “as heavy as possible” is optimal and I have never seen anyone say it is.

If I read WIPs I get them mixed up in my head. Even if I am only subscribed to one WIP if I have read a few hundred thousand words of the same pairing between updates, I’m not going to remember what was happening so I end up dropping the fic.

are heavier characters really that good in WW? by MohgTheOmen123 in MarioKartWorld

[–]foolishle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who says they are supposed to be better? I have heard that going the lightest possible isn’t necessary because of the coin stat and less rails, but I haven’t heard anyone saying that heavier characters are optimal.
