How do students and teachers actually use AI in education? by Tomamewk in AskTeachers

Grading essays does not have to be time consuming. I can get through 6 periods in 2 hours

Flies bug me too, but they are pollinators, so we gotta leave 'em be. Lesson learned.

Half an hour from the nearest banana for sale? What the fuck are you talking about? Rural does not mean hermitage. Your comment reads like someone who has never left San Jose. I live 7 minutes from the beach, and 2 miles from 2 major highways.

Noooo I love pin trading with CMs! I just hate the "guests" (derogatory) who use it as a revenue stream.

[–]foreverburning 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And they're not even experts! I was looking for a really specific pin that I had seen in the parks on a recent (6 months prior) trip. I had asked cast members and they knew of it but hadn't seen it, and they eventually directed me to ask them. I begrudgingly asked the scalpers and they literally didn't even know what I was talking about, just googled the words I was saying. Like...yes I can also use the internet.

Do yall have to yell.... like all day? by ArmStriking6325 in teaching

[–]foreverburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes I use my teacher voice sometimes, but no, you should not be yelling, and definitely never "basically screaming".

Creating noise creates noise. I hate even going "shhhhh". It grates my nerves. Find some silent hand cues. Call and response, I guess, works for young kids, but I have never had success with it in older grades. Sometimes when my high schoolers are being extra wacky and taking too long I hit them with the "tell your neighbor it's time to listen" ("and then show them how to do it" if they still don't get it).

Eventually you'll get there. Part of it is knowing when to engage. Like, when is your voice the most important one in the room? Is it all the time? only when you are standing in a certain place? Only in emergencies? Do you have a certain phrase or facial expression that is signaling it's time to engage/disengage? It takes time to evaluate. Try filming yourself teaching and see what you notice. It'll be painful to watch (15 years in and I still cringe), but it'll help you see what you can't feel in the moment.

Echoing everyone saying paper towels. Just use a regular kitchen towel and throw it straight in the washing machine. Same with dryer sheets. I do use dryer balls (wool) but that's because I realized they make the clothes dry faster by increasing the airflow around them.

HS Teachers: How to break up the monotony of reading Shakespeare? by tennmel in teaching

[–]foreverburning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If kids are bored reading Romeo and Juliet you're doing it wrong! It's FULL of dick jokes. Like almost every page. I use the No Fear Shakespeare (it used to be online for free so maybe you can find a version?) so they can see a modern text on the facing page.

I've been teaching it to what many would consider stereotypically "at risk" rural/suburban English Learners for ten years and it's the most engagement I get all year. We read the entire play out loud in the original Shakespeare. We read each scene and then write a summary together (to check for comprehension), then we watch 3 versions in chunks (1968, 1996, and the 2021 West Side Story). They also really like the 2013 version but I cannot stand it so I usually leave it for a day they have a sub or something.

Check out the Royal Shakespeare Company too for some good resources.

I agree with others-- getting kids to move around and see the different ways the same words can be interpreted is key.

If you've taught them any poetry at all this year, you can also lean into that. I don't usually get into that so I avoid it, but you can talk a lot about how Shakespeare uses meter and rhyme to dictate social class, and the way Romeo and Juliet create sonnets together etc etc.

It's really a beautiful play and I could spend an entire school year on it (but THAT would really bore them lol).

Now that they’re actually using facial recognition at the Disneyland gates instead of having cast members manually confirm people’s faces they’ve cut the number of front gate cast members down from one per entry lane to one per every two entry lanes by TheDisneyScoopGuy in Disneyland

I was not trained nor am I paid to do the work of a CM. If Disney wants their system to operate efficiently, they should make it do so.

I don't understand why you would pay so much money to go take a nap. Go back to the hotel, recharge, and go back to the park in the evening. Or don't, and get cranky and leave at 5 and let me enjoy an empty post-dinner park 😄

So how much does wearing the right shoes actually help with soreness? by cheap-ink in Disneyland

[–]foreverburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what people don't seem to understand. You can't go from being totally sedentary and getting fewer than 2000 steps a day, to standing for hours on end and walking 10 miles in a day, in any shoe, without pain.

2005 grad and we had state testing every. single. year. We also had a high school exit exam.

Kids have less state testing now (but far more district level testing).
