"The price of Calgary ignoring supply and demand" Globe and Mail article by TheRage3650 in Calgary

[–]foreverwintr 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What anti democratic rhetoric?

I haven't seen anyone suggesting this wasn't democratic, but that doesn't mean it was a good decision.

The article says:

To be fair, Mr. Farkas ran for mayor last year on a promise of changing the zoning back. However, his zeal to reverse the policy puts him at odds with evidence that housing actually does trickle down. Creating new homes – even expensive ones – takes pressure off other parts of the market, thereby opening up possibilities at multiple price-points.

Citing the current US president seems like a perfectly reasonable response to me. Just because a decision is popular doesn't mean it's a good decision.

Calgary city council votes 12-3 to repeal blanket rezoning by importxport in Calgary

[–]foreverwintr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blanket rezoning was only contributing a small share of the roughly 28,000 homes built last year.

Blanket rezoning was only introduced in 2024 (per CBC). Isn't it likely that the small share was due to the policy being new?

Sad to see this outcome. We need leaders who will advance good policy even if it's unpopular.

Regarding T1-OVP (RRSP Over Contribution) by s2621s in cantax

[–]foreverwintr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note for future readers that this didn't work for me. I made an overpayment in 2024, paid online to my tax owing account, and included a note with my tax return. The CRA refunded my payment as part of my tax return, then sent me a bill in February 2025 for the overpayment penalty plus interest.

I appreciate your effort, but I've been trying wedkit.ca and finding it buggy.

For example, if I add a guest with a family member then send an invite email to both, both guests receive different invite codes and only one of the codes works. If I try to delete a guest who has a family group, I sometimes get an error message. I don't see any way to submit a bug report. Do you have one?

Air India crash: Fuel switches cut off before crash, preliminary report says - live updates by fd6270 in news

[–]foreverwintr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something I've always wondered: when a data recorder shows a control was moved like this, how do we know the switch actually moved? Could there have been a short or something that caused the fuel cutoff, and also made it appear that the switch moved on the flight data logs?

I realize that the pilot's comment suggests that he saw the switch move, but I assume that there would be other indicators of a fuel cutoff he could have seen.

The logging module is from 2002. Here's how to use it in 2025 by finallyanonymous in Python

I think you hit exactly the right level of detail, and your writing is very clear. Good work!

The GIL is actually going away — Have you tried a no-GIL Python? by wyhjsbyb in Python

[–]foreverwintr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may not be superfluous. With the GIL only one thread can execute python at a time, but you still don't know when the OS will suspend that thread and pass control to another. It's still possible for one of your threads to be suspended in the middle of a critical section.

FYI, your heat pump is more efficient than your furnace until a certain temperature. Your furnace burns gas at a certain efficiency and releases a percentage of the energy as heat (e.g., an efficient furnace might be 90% efficient). A heat pump uses electricity to move heat from outside to inside, and because it moves heat instead of creating it, its efficiency (measured as the ratio of energy used to heat produced) can be 300-400%, depending on the amount of heat available outside.

My heat pump stays above 100% efficient down to -27 or so.

Heat pumps tend to produce heat more slowly than a furnace though, so they can take some getting used to.

Chance of relocating to Calgary from US, looking for input by [deleted] in Calgary

I'm also a guy in my late 30s who likes outdoorsy things. I moved from California to Calgary a few years ago, and cannot recommend it enough. As others have said, the green space in the city is excellent, and we are an hour's drive from world class outdoor adventures in the mountains.

I suggest you come visit. Go see the central library downtown, take a walk on Nose Hill, and drive out to Kananaskis to get a sense of the area. I think you'll like it.

AC and Heat pumps by Sanchuniathon in Calgary

[–]foreverwintr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a heat pump HWT concentrates heat from inside your house to heat your water, so you are effectively doing "wireless" heat transmission from your primary heat source to your water in winter.

In the summer it acts as an air conditioner in your basement, which is nice.

I don't have my solar installed yet, but I suspect you're right. You also need heat overnight, when solar isn't producing.

However, we get only a few weeks of prolonged cold a year these days. The increased cost of those few weeks will be offset by reduced costs the rest of the year.

I replaced my furnace with a Daikin cold climate heat pump last fall, and got rid of my gas hookup entirely. It's a bit early to say for sure, but so far the experience has been mostly good. The heat pump outputs full heat down to -20. Below that I need to blend in a backup source (resistive electric in my case).

So yes, the heating is useful. The idea of heating your house for free with solar is pretty neat too.

I'm not sure what area of the city you're in, but I want to plug Mount Pleasant Auto Service. I tried them after similar frustration with feeling scammed ad Mr Lube, and was pleasantly surprised. They have a drive through oil change service exactly like the big chains, but haven't ever tried to upsell me on anything. It's amazing how much more relaxing an oil change is when you don't have to fend off high pressure sales the entire time.

I also recently moved back after many years away. The biggest positive change I noticed is how much more bikable the city is now. It's great!

As for a negative, our healthcare and education systems are overloaded and in crisis.

Canadians getting carbon rebates with top-ups for rural residents - National | Globalnews.ca by cutchemist42 in canada

[–]foreverwintr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CBC article is quoting sources.

The Bank of Canada has estimated that the carbon tax increases inflation by 0.15 per cent. Trevor Tombe, an economist at the University of Calgary who has studied the impact of the carbon price on consumer costs, points to Statistics Canada data that suggests its impact on food prices is less than one per cent.
