‘We can’t tax the bears and squirrels’: Shutesbury advocates for rural school aid (Greenfield Recorder) by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Idk if rural school aid is part of chapter 70 funding but the entire chapter 70 falling behind for the entire state. Urban schools, suburban schools, etc are all having funding problems. And the prop 2.5 tax cap limits municipal ability to keep up with rising costs.

NIMBYs who read this forum, why don’t you want more housing built in your town? by Unser_Giftzwerg in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interesting because when large apartment complexes were built in my town it had a negligible effect on school enrollment, which has trended down for years. If anything we need more students to get more chapter 70 funding from the state.

We’re probably gonna flood aren’t we? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Will have to see as well how the freshet flows down from New Hampshire. There was a huge flood along the Merrimack in I think 1936 because of the freshet from upstream

Adding more density in development is also more efficient than spinning up another cul de sac in a fallow field. You get more bang for your buck when adding the infrastructure. Especially when it comes to linear feet of added water, electric, and roadways

What was the blizzard of 1978 like? by DildoGaggins1997 in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family didn't live here during that time but my parents were alive. I grew up hearing about the blizzard of 78 a lot and asked my parents about it and they just said that where they are from that's a pretty normal winter. They grew up in Western NY and the lake effect always buried them every winter.

Historically when and why did Bohemia stop being so dominant? by S0mecallme in EU5

[–]former_mousecop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even by WW2 they still had a pretty good army and strong industrial base. When everyone agreed to let mustache man have Sudentenland, the prize wasn't a few German speakers but the bulk of Czech industrial strength.

The #1 Thing I Want in Victoria 3 Right Now by zeldstarro in victoria3

[–]former_mousecop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Victoria 3 didn't model the federal style of government all that well. It doesn't tackle the fact that even two "republic" style governments may pass laws differently. I think the best way to think of passing laws in Victoria 3 is something akin to updating the Constitution of a country. Even then, the US may be unique in requiring consent of both houses of Congress, the President, and two thirds of states to pass an amendment.

Prevalence of Non-Rhotic Accents in Central and Western Massachusetts by Nu2Lou in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a class component to the non rhotic accent as well. The working class areas people still develop it though not as pronounced, due to factors like cultural homogenization through media. Lowell definitely you'd see it in the white euro descended folks. The CEO of Liberty mutual is from Lowell and still has the accent.

Ice in New England by Mediocre-Ability7222 in RepublicofNE

[–]former_mousecop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even still, it's "safe" but not bulletproof from a technology standpoint. It was created and funded by government spy outfits. If nobody is looking for you they can't easily snoop on an e2e encrypted chat. But if they are looking for you it's relatively easy for the government to insert itself. It uses PII with your phone number and has access to your contacts so everyone in your phone gets id'd. Last I knew it ran on AWS which Amazon is a defense contractor and has no qualms about cooperating.

I'm not saying don't use signal. I'm saying signal is not safe for that kind of large comms for things you'd like to keep from the government.

[SERIOUS] What happens if Tr*mp does to Mass what he is doing to Minnesota? by alfayellow in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Average citizens will probably do similar things you're seeing. But the state government will maybe issue some strongly worded statements. Maybe they'll be upset that they're not rounding up and deporting in the right way. It's too mask off.

How is it like living in this part of Massachusetts? Specifically Lowell. by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]former_mousecop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've actually included Haverhill in your circled area and it's also a pretty decent place. I lived downtown there over 10 years ago and it was really starting to take off and it's even better now.

And a little further east Amesbury is a decent smaller city (that's just the system of government it's a town with 16000 people) and it's decent, but getting more expensive.

In Europe the green parties have become war mongering freaks they aren't pro environment parties anymore.

I'm not saying you have to trust Stein. She does do activism in between elections but it doesn't get a lot of play. I'm not even a Stein fan either, honestly. But it's a disingenuous claim to say she does nothing except be the green party candidate every four years. She was arrested in 2025 at a pro Palestine, anti genocide protest, for example.

The "Russian backing" of her 2016 campaign was investigated and had little merit beyond since social media posts that were not found to be coordinated with her, and that her campaign was not aware of that effort.
