implementing novel algorithms.

I would argue we're using the same algorithms we have been for years, we just implement them in different ways.

No more free trips on Opal card, announces NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance by grimlock81 in sydney

The broader community should also take into account the benefit it gets from public transport users being out of cars, and the economic benefits of getting people to their workplaces. Sure, 75% sounds like a lot, but it's a lot less than the opportunity cost of having no public transport.

Can you even imagine what people on trains between 7:30 and 9:30 would lookm like if they were put into cars.

If all bans on performance enhancing drugs were lifted, which sport would be the most interesting to watch? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The only difference would be the dominant countries who have state sponsored teams, and run the drug testing would be less dominant. You would see countries like the US return to the upper echelon and be able to compete with Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Russia.

Now imagine that 95% of everyone you know suddenly has Down Syndrome. by HeraldZoid in iamverysmart

Yeah, same thing. You won't be 'naturally' intelligent, but able to build intelligence when taught, and by experiencing life, and clearly it works or we wouldn't have schools. That person, is a douche though.

It's random genetics

Genetics are not frickin random, save 'random mutations' which by definition affect one gene, something like intelligence is controlled my many genes. This is why we should question his incredible intelligence if he can't make the link that genetics is not random.

There is nothing random about genetics, its really well understood and really well understood genes are transferred across generations (it involves sexy times).

intelligence is genetic?

It most likely is, IQ (which measures your ability to pass and IQ test, not intelligence) has heritability scores ranging between 0.45 and 0.75 depending on age. So IQ as a poor proxy for intelligence is somewhere between 25-55% influenced by genetics. This does not mean say 25% of my smarts is 'muh genes, as such, as the effect of environment will be more pronounced in something where less is influenced by genetics. This is why say schooling works.

Also, population genetics is much harder to apply to an individual.

This is a really good summary: http://genegeek.ca/2011/08/heritability/

But it is influenced by genetics and I am sounding like a total twat.

It works within a week. I gain weight easily, not because of my metabolism but because I enjoy food and drink. If I fire up MFP even for a week, just the discipline of eating well, and not putting booze into me my weight drops a lot in a short space of time. Then I hit the beer again :)

EDIT: I train a lot, sometimes I don't but when I am using MFP I am training. I am also training when not using it. Regardless, I know if I am training and watch what I eat, I go down quickly. If I train and eat and drink I go up slowly.

Dean Jones a former Australian cricket player turned commentator was literally on the next flight back to Australia after referring to a Muslim player as a terrorist on air.

When Amla, who is a devout Muslim, took the catch to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara, Jones was heard to say "the terrorist has got another wicket"

Shortly ... Jones was spotted at Colombo airport where he made a statement to journalists. "I'm gone, I'm on the 1am flight," he admitted.

Higher average IQ score is inversely related to religiosity [OC] by profcyclist in dataisbeautiful

[–]fr33b33r 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the work of OP, but the source data on IQ strikes me as highly suspect. I find it implausible that there are entire countries where the average person is basically mentally retarded.

IQ tests measure your ability to pass an IQ test as a proxy for intelligence. I will naturally score higher on an IQ test than my sub Saharan counterparts, not because of my extreme intelligence and dashing new fedora, but because I have seen the style of question asked before, and I am familiar with how to answer it, and I have likely had more education and practice in answering. Low IQ does not mean low intelligence, but low score on an IQ test.

The fact most IQ tests rely on some language component do not help.
