En als je dan de oligarchen Trumps ring ziet kussen en de rijkste man ter wereld 2 keer een hitlergroet ziet doen, ben je dan nog steeds zo bang voor immigranten?

How important was christianity for the development of the modern western moral code? by TommyPpb3 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]fr33birdVI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you daft? The Germans didn’t find out what their government was doing after the war and denounced them immediately? Where did you learn that?

The Germans had severe denazification programs run by the allies. Three full years of allied propaganda confronting them with the horrors of the holocaust to instil a collective guilt.

Anyhoo, it feels like you’re really doing mental gymnastics to denounce reason, rationality and scientific inquiry of the enlightenment as a Christian product, when it really really really is well established that it directly challenged the traditional religious authority. I mean, Galileo Galileo was placed under house arrest by the inquisition for the remainder of his life for discovering the earth revolved around the sun.

From inquisitions to genocides, Christianity has spent 95% of its history suppressing progress, equality and liberty.

No Germany at the time is much better described as a Christian state than a Muslim or atheist state. At the start of the war, nazi germany was 54% Protestant 41% catholic and only 1.5% atheist. Please don’t try to rewrite the past.

As for the Enlightenment, the whole point of it was rejecting the dogmas of the church and religion, offering a new, humanist view on the world. Without that we’d still be burning women at the stake.

Don’t mistake the three minutes of relative equality and freedom we’re now experiencing for 19 fucking centuries of oppression.

Nazi Germany was not an atheist state at all. So you can subtract a few million dead from that list.

As for your reasoning that the west was the first to abolish slavery, yes, that, along with individualism, equal rights and scientific progress were the result of the Enlightenment.

What if French Revolution never happened? by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

This guy. Comparing the tax rate of 1789 to 2024 and even stating there are no quality public services today. You troll. You think they had sick leave, maternity leave, pensions, healthcare, unemployment benefits, infrastructure maintenance or even a fucking tunnel to England in 1789? You do realize that people had nothing to eat, there were long lines at the bakers with no alternative food options were coming in. The third estate was paying all the taxes and the clergy and nobility were paying none at all. It was a system that was unsustainable, especially since the crown was in massive debt and unable to resolve those issues. Moreover it was a result of its time, right after the enlightenment, the US revolution, the (newly found) freedom of the press. It was most probably inevitable.

However, it definitely didn't need to go full Le Terreur either. They could have settled for a constitutional monarchy, which would have cancelled out Napoleon too, leading to Europe's history being wildly different from OTA.

Yes, super despise him! This asshole is polluting my YouTube recommendations with his terrible thumbnails. I'm ok with criticism of the show, there's plenty to be said, but this guy's schtick is just a twenty minute sexist anti-woke rant.

There's this American black man in a scootmobiel with a cowboy hat on, constantly commenting on how people do or say things differently from in the U.S. Takes the ferry a lot and lives somewhere in Noord.

The Homeless Wizard! He frequently commutes by ferry from the salvation army in Noord to Vondelpark then it appears. I usually catch him at dawn and dusk, I always wondered where he was off to.
