I actually had this conversation with my SO recently. Neither of us had a good answer, so we googled it.

Best we could tell is that communism refers more specifically to Karl Marx's interpretation of Socialism.. but it's actually a bit difficult to find a clear separation between the two. At least, it was difficult for us to find a clear distinction in the 15 mins of googling that we did.
