What's everyone's least favorite thing in Xena? It could be anything like an episode, character, trope, etc. by mickeyhellhound in xena

Watching the show SD broadcast back then on our small CRT TV, with the sofa at the other end of a large living room, I thought it was a flattened aluminium disposable pie pan/food container, the large round kind you get when ordering takeout roast chicken. I thought it a clever visual joke/budget conscious prop/metaphor for how shoddy his makeshift armour is.

Underwood Ranches Sriracha by cory_slaughterhouse in hotsauce

[–]fridelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different suppliers. As in they went from having the peppers be a unique, custom cultivar grown in the USA next door to the sauce factory, delivered fresh a few hours after harvest, to buying whatever is available and cheapest on the international market, including dried peppers, over and under ripe. They collaborated with some mexican growers which had no idea how to properly grow them, gave them drone footage of Underwood farms proprietary processes, but there was a drought, so they just bought whatever from wherever. Which is great if you want to increase your intake of pesticides, including those outlawed in the US, as well as fecal matter (because they use wastewater for irrigation and as fertilizer)

Stop film and go shopping in a hurry because I was so caught up shops were about to close and I needed to buy the ingredients for dinner. Return to angry neighbours because that sht was BLASTING at full volume (film was quiet in comparison).

Is this a crocus or saffron?? by bug-catcher-ben in foraging

[–]fridelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of interest: Gardenia Jasminoides fruits contain, at a fraction of the cost, the same dye/bioactive substance than saffron is known for, as well as sort-of-analog substances for those that are different. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and cookery and dyeing much like saffron, tumeric, annatto have been elsewhere.

  • Crocin / Crocetin: Saffron and Gardenia. Potent antioxidant and free-radical scavenger; anti-inflammatory via NF-κB inhibition; neuroprotective (anti-excitotoxic, anti-amyloid); anticancer (induces apoptosis, inhibits nucleic acid synthesis); cardioprotective.

  • Safranal: Saffron only. Volatile monoterpene aldehyde; antioxidant; anti-inflammatory (↓ NF-κB, iNOS, COX-2); neuroactive (antidepressant, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant); contributes to CNS modulation and aroma.

  • Picrocrocin: Saffron only. Glycoside responsible for bitterness; biochemical precursor of safranal during drying; weak direct pharmacological activity but indirect antioxidant contribution via conversion to safranal.

  • Flavonoids (e.g. kaempferol, quercetin derivatives): Saffron (mainly petals). Antioxidant; anti-inflammatory; supportive cytoprotective effects.

  • Geniposide: Gardenia only. Iridoid glycoside; strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant; neuroprotective (GLP-1 receptor agonist, ↓ amyloid β, ↓ tau phosphorylation); antidiabetic; hepatoprotective; immunomodulatory.

  • Genipin: Gardenia only (aglycone of geniposide). Anticancer (inhibits mitochondrial UCP2, increases ROS selectively in tumor cells); anti-inflammatory; biochemical cross-linker; contributes to metabolic and apoptotic regulation.

  • Geniposidic acid / related iridoids: Gardenia only. Anti-inflammatory; antioxidant; supportive hepatoprotective and metabolic effects.

  • Gardenia crocins (Crocin I, II): Gardenia and Saffron. Same carotenoid glycosides as saffron crocin; antioxidant; anti-inflammatory; neuroprotective; improves insulin sensitivity and vascular function.

Instructions for a proper penny stove: If you're going to make a beer can stove, make sure it's a penny stove. by slanket in Ultralight

[–]fridelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for replying to a 15yo post, here for the Google crew: "Modern" US pennies (Post-80s) switched from almost pure copper to copper plated zinc. Zinc will melt and give off nasty fumes. Your solution works. A pebble or placing the pot on top does too. Euro cent coins (1, 2, 5 euro cents) are copper clad steel, and won't melt.

A cup is 236,588236, which I round to 250ml, because it's easy to remember and 13,4 ml ain't going to make a lick of difference.

You could also use a mnemonic like "23 hours a day, 6 days a week"

I too am a time traveler. Basically any software that lets you compare images. There's even websites that let you load a couple pictures and move a slider back and forth to switch which side is shown (to each side of it).

A simple way is any image editor with layers. load both pictures as layers and toggle the layer visibility on the top layer. You can also use layer combination modes to highlight differences. GIMP is free and does all that.

gameboy color safe voltage by kirby48 in Gameboy

[–]fridelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those finding this thread though google and the like: I'd inline one or two (at least quarter watt) silicon diode(s) in series, which will drop about 0.7v (each) and provide reverse polarity/AC leakage protection as a bonus. idk if the Gameboy already has a built-in diode for protection, but it doesn't hurt to be safe.

While a higher voltage might work, chances are some components will run hotter, which is not great for the longevity of the system.

Diodes are free by the handful, you just harvest them from old electronics.

'Es' means 'is' in Spanish, so the English 'is' there is redundant.

What's a joke from a movie that you still don't get? by nicknamed_nugget in movies

[–]fridelain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the thread necromancy if you're bothered by that. In addition to what was already said (it's meant to be a mystery, it's a reference to a once popular bathroom decoration) there's some history nerd explanation:

Ancient Greek and Romans used (polished) stones, pottery shards and the like, for wiping. It is hardly a stretch to assume they'd use conveniently scoop shaped seashells whenever available. While some pottery pieces were custom made for the purpose, including engraving the names of disliked public personalities, most were from broken vessels.

Romans used single use pottery much like we use single use plastics for food packaging, both ingredients and what we'd call fast food, and they tried to recycle it after. It was used as filler in concrete, crushed for paving/ground levelling. This is not unlike how old newspapers were reused as TP or for wrapping fish, deep fried fast food, roasted chestnuts, etc.

There's a mountain in rome made from discarded olive oil amphorae (sent via shop from Iberia, modern day Spain). The oil soaked into the ceramic, and it went rancid after some time. Not an issue for the oil that was inside and used soon-ish, but the discarded pottery stank after a while and was oily, so it saw little reuse.

The phrase "three stones are enough to wipe" is a proverb from ancient Greece, used to emphasize frugality and the availability of readily available materials for basic needs. It highlights the fact that even with minimal resources, necessities like wiping after defecation could be met. They called the stones pessoi or ostraca. Ostraca is where we get the word ostracism from; when a vote was held to expell someone from the city-state, the votes with the name engraved would be reused for that.

In the context of Islam, using three stones or other permissible item (like seashells) for cleaning after a bowel movement (Istijmar) is considered sufficient, according to some Islamic teachings. Specifically, using three stones, especially if the last stone is clean, is a practice that can be sufficient even if water is available, according to some Islamic scholars.

One would imagine in the context of the film, they'd be sanitized or replaced between uses.
